K9.... Mandi is just great. I wouldn't absolutely need Lyric for that in the virtually crime free area I live in. (it does make me feel a tad better though) My Chihuahuas are LOUD... gives me plenty of time to do something if I need to. The sherriff could be here before the bad guy got up my long driveway. Those Chi's have bionic hearing and can pinpoint very well from a great distance....(those big, upright ears.) My boy Chi even ran a black bear off my property. So, don't underestimate the power of a watch dog.Beryl....your Rip sounds like he was a wonderful dog. My last GSD was like that, really friendly. Lyric really isn't like that. He is definitely more suspicious of strangers...he does need to size them up a little first...isn't really that keen on being too chummy with strangers for a while. But some people he warms up to fairly quickly and it depends too, on the situation. If I'm sitting there chatting and obviously friendly, then he is much more relaxed and more outgoing. But if we're in a strange place and a passer by wants to pat him, he'll let them...no problem, but doesn't look like he really gives a rip whether they do or not. It's like, "whatever....I took that darn CGC test and I guess I have to let this human that I don't even know pat me all over. Some people are sooooo familiar." But even then, with some people (more relaxed people who aren't afraid of Dobermans) he can become quite a bit more affectionate after a couple of minutes. |

We have eagles at our house and I see them circling above and screeeeeeching all the time. One yesterday circled lower and lower and called out about 10 times. I snatched Harley up and called Bailey and Lucy to the house. It was VERY low. Does anyone know why crows always seem to be picking on the eagles? There will be about 10-15 crows harassing the eagles and beating up on them everyday.

crows will gang up and run preditor birds off. I've observed this behavior around here often. They do this to protect their own nesting sites.
So if you have crows around your house, be thankful for the noisy things. They'll do their part to keep your puppers safe ![]() |

Such a good boy Lyric!
Sarge was never socialized well enough when he was young. I don't think the family interacted with him the first few years of his life. So when I got him, he was EXTREMELY over protective... especially of me. Lots of socialization brought out the best in him. He was so well behaved in public, and loved kids. He'd say hello to anyone, but he could pick out the good people from the bad. He could also pick out the people that didn't like dogs. I only had to say one word to put him "On alert" which is when we would walk at night time/when it was dark out. I get a little freaked at night time so it was nice to have that slight sense of security. He was such a great dog. I miss him dearly. Kelso has begun to show his protective streak while in the house or outback. Outside, he LOVES everyone. Wagging tail and ears flat and just so relaxed. He's slowly beginning to alert us of any noises he hears outside. And still does not like other dogs. Ears flat, tail down, hackles ALL the way up. But he's fine if I approach them. He's certainly a much different dog and I'm enjoying the difference in personalities. |

That's interesting how Sarge changed so much in the time with you. It does give a little extra something to have a dog like that along side you.
I'm glad you're enjoying Kelso so much. I forget how old he is now? Lyric started showing his protective behavior at around 4-1/2 months of age. It was incredible to me. He'd stand up on the couch, looking out the window if he heard someone coming or whatever and growl that low, throaty growl. It was so weird coming from such a little guy. My GSDs didn't do that that early. And at only around 8 months it was the time when someone came into my son's apartment in the middle of the night and Lyric went in front of me, stood squarely and all muscled up and really growled and barked ferouciously. The guy backed right out of the door. It turned out to be a friend of his, but it was weird that he walked in at that hour. The door had been left unlocked. |

He's just over 5 months old now. Gosh... I thought he was older than that. LOL
He "puffs" if he hears something. Once he see's something, or you ask him "What is it?" He let out a "Bar roow" and then he gets bored. LOL He's certainly turning into a very handsome dog. He looks so much different from the pictures I posted of him last. His right ear is standing all the way up. The other is still flopped, I don't think it's going to come up. I'll have to get some pictures tonight and post them. Matter of fact.. I'm going to do that right now! Hehe But he's a really good dog. So well behaved. For a puppy, he's very calm and gets his moments where he wants to run around the yard like a mad man. He'll find the smallest thing... a rag, piece of cardboard, a stick and he halls butt around the back yard throwing it around. LOL He's such a weirdo. |
