My marshmellow Doberman
Sometimes I think of Lyric as a real wussie. He is sooooo not dominant and not aggressive, at least not inappropriately. He's more of an observer, I always say.
Normally, when I'm outside with the dogs, Lyric won't even bark if someone comes driving up the driveway. He just watches. And he's continues watching for a few minutes while I talk to the person. He only barks when he's inside the house and someone is coming. And he sounds serious. But he always stops when I tell him that it's cool or if I start talking in a friendly way to the person. Today, this guy who my son knows....who has only been here a couple of times, came up to give my son some money he owned him and my son wasn't here. I was inside finishing up in the shower and Lyric and Toker were outside in the yard. So, I didn't get out there right away when this guy came, but just a minute or two after. He sat outside with me and chatted and said that when he first came, Lyric and Toker were playing and as he walked on my path toward my front door, Lyric was all fine and happy, just watching.... but as the guy came closer to my front door, nearing the few steps to the porch, Lyric ran up on the porch and sat right in front of the door and gave him a low, little growl. He said it looked like Lyric was telling him..."that's close enough." He wasn't acting aggressive, his body language looked fairly relaxed..he wasn't "going off" or anything...just a quiet little rumbling growl. So, the guy thought to himself, "I'll just stand back and wait and see if she comes out of the house." I did seconds later and we sat and chatted. (He told me all this) Then Lyric was all kissy and friendly and licking the guy. LOL. It was like...it's OK if someone he doesn't know well comes on the property...."I'll keep an eye out." But it's definitely not OK to come in the house. What a perfect and appropriate response from a Doberman. I was proud of him. ![]() |

Thanks guys. Bigdog....he's not always all of those things. But he suprised me today by doing his job the way he's suppose to. He used his head and knew just how much to do in that situation without going overboard.
Sammy...I've had a lot of different breeds during my lifetime and hands down, the Doberman (IMO, of course...lol,) is the Rolls Royce of breeds. They are just wonderful. Everything a dog is or does...a Doberman does more of it...they're an intense breed. And not a really easy breed and they're definitely not for everyone. They do take a lot of work. If someone sees my Doberman walking down the street on a leash, they have no idea what a major dork, goof ball, affectionate, lap dog he really is. LOL. He can be so serious with his "work ethic" when needed and 180 degrees the other way most of the time. Thanks for your nice replies girls. |

Awww, Good boy Lyric. Can I send Lucy and Harley to Lyric and have him teach them some manners? These two still bark when someone comes in the yard whether they are outside or in. They stop when I tell them to now but boy what a racket at first. I hope I can get a big dog someday. I love my weiner crew but I sure miss having a big dog to play with and snuggle with.

That's awesome. Now that's a dog doing his job!
Wish mine would do that....LOL. Tysa rumbles, it's just not her thing to bark, well, on a very rare occasion. PJ likes to woof, not excessive, but he does when someone comes here. Funny thing is, when someone comes into the house, PJ is your immediate best friend, while Tysa needs a few minutes to get you figured out, then she's all good. ![]() |

Blitz is the same way. Total wuss out in public or around people he knows. Let a stranger stroll into our yard (especially when the kids are outside with him) and he gets unfriendly real quick.
Carrie, I haven't been around much latley. Toker? New dog? Does he/she perhaps listen to Bob Marley? ![]() |

LOL Gooch. Toker is a new dog...my son's. We think she has GSD, Pitbull in her. She has a sort of GSD snout, but very wide, powerful jaws and that wide hind quarter stance. She's golden in color with a blackish muzzle and beautiful eyes with black liner around them. She is very friendly to everyone.
Well, it's sure nice that he keeps an eye on your kids...good helper. Barrett, the Chihuahuas do above and beyond with their share of making a racket. LOL. They're very loud and shrill. They bark and run up to people wagging their tails. Well, Chuli does. Jose's a little more reserved. I don't think my dogs could teach yours manners. Lyric is pretty good but he can make a racket at other times, just not in those situations I mentioned. There are bears, I think hanging out in the woods behind me. The berries are crummy this year and the bears aren't getting enough to eat. So, they're coming around. You should hear the noise level here at night when one of them gets a whiff from my window. Then they all go balistic. It's really something. And it takes more than one command (LOL) to quiet them. I have to go to them and get their attention...."enough! It's nothing, you're OK" But they don't always buy it. LOL. Be careful what you wish for. I tell you one thing I've noticed, having these toy dogs for the first time ever (I've always had big or medium dogs)...they're a lot easier. LOL. All except one scary thing: birds of prey mostly...other animals I guess, but I feel pretty safe with Lyric and Toker around the little dogs in that area. They scare away just about anything. Britishbandit....your dogs sound perfect. I prefer a dog who doesn't bark too much. (Why do I have Chihuahuas? LOL) My Lab hardly ever barked and my GSDs before her never barked. Lyric barks at certain things, wild animals outside (the sounds, smells), people, when he's inside as they're coming up the driveway, until they get here... and if we're in the car and he sees a dog outside the window as we're driving along. But being outside, he just runs up close to their car to see what's going on. Sometimes the person isn't sure they want to get out of their car until I walk over. The other dogs do all the noise making, so maybe he figures he doesn't have to waste his voice. LOL. Thanks everybody for reading my little "story." |

I think I need to send Sadie up for Lyric to teach her the lessons in guarding. LOL She thinks she is a big gung-hoe guard dog but she goes into her "mode" at the weirdist things! She needs to learn that it is ok to bark at people that come to the door, not a truck on the road across a feild! And that it is when we don't talk friendly to the people that she needs to step up, not when the cows in our neighbor's feild are by our driveway! *rolls eyes*
She is very protective for a Labrador pup, but she loves barking at any strange noise she hears! But what a good boy Lyric is! Quote:

Yes, Labs aren't known for their protective abilities, but I think I told this story before, so I'll just summarize. My Lab, Bonnie never barked at anything, loved everyone. But one night when someone was trying to jimmy the door (teenage kids were home alone) that dog came unglued at the entry/front door. The kids said she was gnashing teeth...vicious. Who would have ever thunk it? LOL. So, you just never know. When people come to your front door and she doesn't bark, she probably can sense that they're OK. The same thing happened with one of my GSDs....seemed to be a lousy protection dog, never barked, was friendly to everyone (not your typical, reserved GSD) and then one night the same type of thing happened and OMG! He turned into the most scary, vicious dog you could imagine. So, he just knew. Some dogs have better sense than others about these things. And Dobermans are notorious for having an uncanny ability to know the good guys from the bad, better than most...as long as they're socialized very throroughly. |

I LOVE that story. Your dog was doing want we WANT our dogs to do. We don't want them to seek and destroy but to take the necessary action to prevent harm.
Latte is like Mandi (of course) but my GSD (RIP) acted like Lyric. The groomers would call him "Lance the Lover" because he loved everyone. OTOH, he was extremely protective to me. People could tell that if they did anything threatening, they would have him to deal with. |
