What are your favorites?
Book about dogs / any dog related topic? What's on your dog book 'to read' list?
My current fav is "Bringing light to Shadow" a dog trainers diary.~ from aggressive rescue dog to canine good citizen~ by Pamela Dennison. I'm not even half way through it yet but it's WONDERFUL. I'm learning so much and am in awe of how much she accomplished with a dog who was aggressive towards humans and had so many issues. I wish I could curl up on my sofa and read it cover to cover. My all time favorite dog book is of course Culture Clash by Jean Donaldson. I think I've read it three times and often refer back to it when I come across something new. TOEOTL is another all time fav. I want to watch some of Patricia McConnell's videos. For agility or any other dog sport or anyone trying to train a really high drive, out of control dog I love "Shaping Success" by Susan Garrett. I'm also loving Kim Collin's new one called "From the ground up" it's about agility fundamentals. I wish I had read it before I started agility with Sammy! My next book will be "Dogs" A new understanding of canine origin, behavior and evolution by Raymond and Lorna Coppinger. I have heard so many good things about this book. I ordered it from amazon and flipped through it-- I think it will be so interesting but not as easy a read as many of my other favorites. my to read list: I think my next book will be fiction! Hopefully something spicy My next dog book will hopefully be one about herding. When we went to the herding clinic the instructor was selling one. He didn't write it but he thought it was the best herding book out and it isn't readily available so he brings them for his students. It's hardcover and $40 !!! so I didn't buy it. Now I wish I had. |

Ohhh, there are so many I want to read!
My next book will probably be "Marley and Me".....I havn't read it yet, but I'm really itching to!! I have a whole slew of dog related books I want to read, but that one will be the first. After that one though, I want to get all the Harry Potter books, I'm dying to read those!!! ![]() I just finished up Cesar's Way, and must say I have mixed feelings on some of the stuff. |

My all time fav also is Culture Clash. I liked The Other End of the Leash too. Don't Shoot the Dog by Karen Pryor is very good and detailed. I'm just now starting The Power of Positive Training by Pat Miller. I'd like to read Calming Signals. There are just so many good ones out there. And a limited pocket book. So, I don't think I'll spend my money on Ceasar's Way because seeing how he handles dogs on his TV show, if it's anything close, I don't think it would be for me. And I would imagine his philosophy wouldn't be different in his book from his TV show. I've read Koelher a long time ago....hated that guy. Returned that book to the library on time. LOL. I've read Barbara Woodhouse. I've read Mother Knows Best, The Monks of New Skete. Those are all pretty much obsolete and useless. I would like to get the book Sammy recommended: "Dogs" A new understanding of canine origin, behavior and evolution by Raymond and Lorna Coppinger. It sounds like a good one. There are so many books I'd like to get but I'm going broke buying books. LOL. A long time ago, I read one...can't remember the name, but it was by someone named Paul Loeb. He explained step by step how he trained his Weim to walk to the corner store (all by himself) and get a hand carrying basket in his teeth, go to the dog food shelf and knock a certain number of cans into the basket, go to the counter and show the clerk while he bagged the cans. Paul had an account there so there was no need for exchanging money. Then the Weim took the bag in his teeth and walked home. I really enjoyed that one, but it's been years. I've read a lot of books which I use to get from the library way back when I was in my 20's and had my first GSDs. Then I read about Labs and breed specific training....hunting etc. I'd never remember what they were all called, but I'd bring home stacks of library books. LOL. |

Brenda Aloff's "Canine Body Language" is one of my favorites...I LOVE that book!
Training wise, I don't really have any favorites...nothing has really stood out as 'amazing' in my head. I want to get ahold of the new Culture Clash (I got mine just a short time before the new one...eughh!!). I also want to get the CM book/video from the library so I can have an idea of what everyone is talking about...no cable here, so I've only seen him a handful of times. There are a billion other books I'd love to read too... I've read the Coppingers book, it's LONG and not something that's easy to read in one sitting, but very enjoyable. It's one that makes you think so much your head will hurt! (...Harry Potter, definately a dog book....coming from someone with a dog named Luna....haha...) GoldenPup |

...read it with the lights on! The new edition of "How to be Your Dog's Best Friend" by the Monks of New Skete is a good one. "Cesar's Way" by Cesar Millan is a favorite...what a shock! "The Body Language and Emotion of Dogs" by Myrna M. Milani is interesting. "The Dog's Mind" by Bruce Fogle - I need to read this one again. I tend to enjoy books which are less "emotionally" based. Don't care for books written by authors who promote "Positive Only", (yet behave "negatively" towards other trainers and methods - BIG turn-off!). I haven't read Michael Fox for awhile, and want to get more into Patricia McConnell's books. Haven't read Jon Katz, yet. I've got a whole stack of older books I have collected, but haven't read. I've now got my list of "must reads" from the Debate Forum, too. ![]() |
