Yesterday's Job Interview
Late last week, I submitted an application for employment at Fred Meyers in Warrenton, Oregon. Monday, while I was in town, I get a phone call at home from them.. Mom calls me and gives me the number. I call them back and they ask if I can come in for an interview on Tuesday at noon.
So yesterday, I went in for the interview, which lasted maybe 10 minutes.. She gave me a list of possible jobs that were available and I narrowed it down to two. One was working outside pumping gas for people (because you can't pump your own gas in Oregon for some odd reason..) or working inside at the Starbucks station. I asked the pros and cons of each. Pumping gas, I'd get more hours and get paid more per hour than I would inside making coffee for people. She then gets up and says she's going to go find the fuel station manager. Two minutes later, he comes in and gives me a second interview.. While he's talking to me, he has me put this cotton swab thing between my cheek and gums.. This interview lasted maybe 5 minutes.. One of the questions asked was, "Do you have any experience pumping gas?" I told him, "Well, I live in Washington... Does that count?" He laughed and went on to tell me that they're going to start me off at around $8/hr with a guaranteed 20 hours / week, but it'll more than likely be 30 - 40 hours / wk.. My pay will go up from there, as well as my hours, as they see how much I can accomplish in a short amount of time. In other words... I got the job! Pumping gas is just a start.. I gotta do something to pay for my car and maybe a laptop in the future.. As I progress, I'll transfer to a different position.. ![]() |

Congrats!
Wow, $8 for pumping gas. You have to have a respectable job to get paid that around here! |

the minimum wage generally can be different from state to state. In WA it just went up to, i think its $7.80 now (or by next year, its on a step scale here voted in years ago) Alaska's and California's is also high, and i believe the national, or federal standard, is still between $4 and $5 still |

$4 or $5 ? That's really low. Do they really expect people to live off of that? Unbelievable. Glad you got something with good pay Justin.
Congrats ![]() |

Federal minimum wage is $5.15/hr, I believe... Oregon is $7.60 and I think Washington is going up to $7.80... I do know Washington has the highest in the nation..

Nah, my first job was working at the college under the work study program.. not sure if that counts, but I used it as a reference anyway.
I hope I'll be able to save up for some stuff.. I've got a car to pay for.. I'd so love to get a laptop...but that's a ways away, I think.. We'll see how big my checks are and how much I can save up. I get paid weekly, too, so I figure I'll make enough in one week to make the car payment and insurance for the month.. Maybe make a car payment every other week and save the rest? I don't know... It's a thought though.. My dad co-signed on the car with me so I could build my credit and so he could re-establish his.. If I did it this way, it would definitely help our credit out a lot.. ![]() hehe... I haven't even started working yet and already I've got big plans.. LOL |
