It was probably a mastiff!
A friend of mine from another forum used to volunteer at a shelter. They got a report saying there was a 'pitbull' comming in that had attacked a woman. Well guess what it was when the dog got there.... A SAMOYED! Once the court was told, they dropped all charges. I bet if it was confirmed to be a pit, the dog would probably have been PTS. |

I just watched the video - and it makes me want to cry. My husband's Uncle raises Pit Bulls - "Land Of Giants" is his kennel - and while I may not necessarily want one as a pet for myself (I am SOLELY a BC owner) - they are all the sweetest, most gentle and loving dogs. I have visited on numerous occasions and played with them in the yard at the kennel, etc.
There was a specific incident that happened that makes me believe that while they are a large and sometime intimidating dog - they are NOT man-eaters! My husband's Dad has one of the dogs from the kennel as a pet. His name is Harley and he is a 110lb un-altered male. He is a baby! The worse part about him is that he has no idea that he is such a big dog! He tries to climb right up into the recliner with you and lays on you if you're on the floor. And thier cat kicks his butt all the time! Well, my husband got locked out of his truck one night and walked over to his Dad's house (about 1/4 mile away from the pub we were at) to get us a ride home and he walked into the pitch-black house without even thinking! Now, the dog has met us quite a few times - but it was completely dark and he was definitely surprised my the intrusion. He came over and barked a couple of times and growled and would not let me husband go any further than the front door that he had enetered. His Dad heard the noise and came down and turned on the lights and the dog instantly started wagging his tail and licking my husbands hand. Now, if this dog was a killer - you would think that he had a chance to do it that night and didn't! He WAS protecting his domain - but his precuationary bark and growl was his way of saying "You don't belong here - so don't even think about going any further" - this is the reaction of ANY dog that is protective of his home. He didn't attack or bite or anything else. All these people that train these dogs to fight should be put in jail!!! I know it sounds harsh - but dogs are supposed to be our companions in life - not just another means of making money, showing off, or whatever they do this for. This kind of behavior gives all dog owners (especially ones that own larger breeed dogs) a bad name. We have a Bull Terrier on our Flyball team! For those of you who are familiar with Flyball - it a very "social" sport where dogs are constantly crossnig paths in a VERY excited state. This is the perfect opportunity for an aggresive dog to lash out at a more timid team-mate or opponent. Bella just runs her races and goes right to her owner EVERY time. Lumping her into the "Pit Bull type of dog" is not a fair judgement on her! It is just a shame.... |

Very good video!
About the 120lbs pit bull... could have been a Cane Corso, Prisa Canario, etc. These are all more or less Overgrown Pit Bulls. the other fact remains that people who are not interested in breed standard in regards to size probably arent going to give a crap about breed standard in forms of temperment either. So while this 120lb pit bull (?) is waaay over his limit, its not entirely possible that he wasn't a pit, but its also not entirely impossible that he was irresponsibly bred thus physically and mentally not up to standard. What a shame! The bad part is they put these bans on pit bulls and the bite instances dont decline. then they accuse (b/c that is what they're doing. blindly accusing) another breed, and ban it. bites do not go down again, so they ban yet anther breed. before you know it anything that has a little meat on its bone is banned. mastiffs, boxers, AmStaffs, basically any of the bullenbeiser (sp?) bred dogs. They're all going to be outlawed. Nevermind that the poorly bred cockerspaniels and yorkies (actually, the poorly bred ANYTHINGS) are crazy and bite more than anything else. But they'll never be banned because more people find them CUTE! unbeleivable. In that one report is said that goldens bit 82.? % more than pit bulls did. (I think that was the figure, I dont remember exactly-kinda ruins my argument. D*MN! ah well... you all get what I'm saying) i'm just getting p*ssed off as I type more, so i'm going to stop. One more note... at the shelter where I started volunteering, there was a pit bull puppy (about 10 months old) who was brutally attacked by a yellow lab (before I started there). Severly attacked, this lab was relentless and the pit did nothing to fight back, he wallowed in the corner! What do you think... fighting is learned or inherant? |

I definetly say it is a learned trait. Because as people say, it's in how you raise them. And actually, Pitbulls were never actually bred to fight. They were bred to protect farmers from any unruly bulls. The dogs would control the bulls/cows if they got out of hand. Then later on down the road taught the dogs to fight, and the 'aggression' is carried, but I feel that if a dog is raised correctly with other dogs or animals, it can live a happy life, and yes there are a few of these dogs that just have too high of the drive, and can't be placed in a home with other dogs or animals. But I really think it is more of a learned aggression than anything...

I couldn't watch the whole thing. Way to disgusting
. Everyone always says "pit bull" because they assume that all dog attacks MUST involve a more aggressive breed such as pit bulls and staffies. These people don't know German Shepherds from Shiba Inus! It makes me so mad that we have so many darn IDIOTS in America......can't we just put THEM to sleep? |
