I'm getting a new temp. baby! *update: pictures*

I'm jumping the gun announcing this, plans aren't even set, but I'm so excited I wanted to share! I PROMISE I'm not copying y'all!

There's a woman who needs a temporary home (about 6 months) for her Chihuahua mix, Oliver. I'll explain the situation after he's here. I saw her post about a week ago, and it was on my heart all week. So I e-mailed last night to see if anyone else had offered to help. She said there were two other offers, but neither was perfect, and she was open to other options. So I gave her an "introduction" and she said she'd love for me to have him. The plan is to pick him up on Friday, but I just e-mailed and asked her if that would work, so we'll see. I mentioned him in my post about housebreaking Missie, so that's the plan while he's here! I don't know anything about him appearance-wise except that he's a small Chi mix! I did ask about his weight to see how small he really is. She said he's a real cuddler, and wants to snuggle ALOT. He'll fit in perfect here. It's kind of a different situation because it's hurried and there are alot of things I don't know, but she has described his personality, behaviors and routines, so I'm not going to worry. My parents didn't take any convincing, and I just sprung this on them, so I'm taking that as a sign. lol

I'll update as I find out more! I took in two rats like this about a month ago. I'm such an organized person, it's insane to do things quickly like this! But it's working out, and I'm willing to make it work, so I have faith it will.

She sent me pictures this morning! He looks like a Rat Terrier/Chi mix, doesn't he? He's 1.5 years old, and weighs 7 pounds. I don't think she's made her final decision that we're to be his foster family, but it sounds like she likes us best of her three options, and her last e-mail sounded like maybe she had made the decision. So it's confusing right now, but I think it'll work out. You can tell they really love him. She's going to have a contract guaranteeing we'll return him in 6 months and everything. Pictures now! She sent another one that made me think Rat Terrier.

Aw! He's such a cutie! I agree with the Rat Terrier/Chi. His fur looks a bit longer, but that could be because of a long haired chi... Ah well... he sure is cute! Hope everything goes well! Let us know when she makes her decision

I've had my messenger up all day so I can see as soon as I get an e-mail. I'm kind of a nervous wreck waiting to find out! I need to not worry and just realize it'll work out if it's supposed to, but it's hard with something this exciting. Hehe!

He could be a mix of a few things, as you're right about his fur. His tail is feathered if you notice. He's so cute! I thought he'd be more Chi size, but he's Missie's weight, and looks to be a bit taller maybe. I can't believe he'll be home tomorrow if all works out!

Six months is way too long for pup sitting for you AND the dog. Your going to be terribly attached and he's going to be traumatized. I hope it all works out though.

I think it's ok for me to explain his story now, I'm just worried about safety. His owner and her kids are getting out of an abusive situation. They're going somewhere safe, so I'll have him until they get back on their feet and everything's safe. They're looking forward to having him back, as he's "very therapuetic" for them. Knowing why I'm fostering him will make it easy for me to give him back, I think, so I'm not worried about me. I just hope and pray he does ok being away from them. Shelter dogs (they adopted him from one at 6 months old) are often re-homed several times, and as long he goes back to them and stays permanately, I think he'll be ok, too. There's no way around the situation except to permanately re-home him, and I don't think that would be any better for anyone, really. So that's his story.

It's so kind and gracious of you to do this for them! I'm sure they'll appreciate all the good things you'll teach him, especially potty training. Good luck and keep us informed

What a big heart you have and I know it's going to be broken in six months. Bless you for helping this family and maybe this little pupster will also heal in your care because I'm sure it went thru some very bad experiences too.

Glad to hear you are doing this for them. For many people a pet complicates them getting out of an abusive situation. Most shelters for abused people do not allow them to bring their pets, and most people do not want to give up their pets so they stick around. Luckily more shelters are realizing this and setting up foster programs so they can make sure their pets are safe, and they will get to see them again. Good luck

Calgal, I've been wondering if he's suffered any abuse or will be afraid of men. The lady didn't mention either, and said her husband actually owns a GS, so I don't know if he would've been abused or not. We'll see. My parents are on their way to get him. I can't wait, but I'm really nervous for the woman's safety.

Mulroony, I know I've read articles about that. Ever since I came across the situation I think about other women in the same situation constantly. I thought of starting a network of foster homes, but keep getting stuck at the part of letting women in those situations know that option is available. What an awesome program to meet people's needs though, huh? I should look into if our local women's shelter is doing something like that. It's just crazy how people can help abused women (and probably men!) get help by taking in their pets! That's right up my alley helping people by helping animals. I know this will be a good experience, no matter what we have to go through adjusting.

It's very kind of you to help her out that way. Will she be able to come and visit to help Oliver adjust? And just to stay in touch?
Is he home? How does Missie feel about him?

Sorry for all the questions, just curious.

A program to help people in that situation out is a very good idea.
