this is my first summer with a dog as an adult. every other time i had a dog i wasnt responsible for him. so now i wonder what to do with my dog in the summer to keep him cool. i already have an appointment on friday to get his hair cut down, we dont have air conditioning... but we are looking into it today... he have a fan going constantly, and there is an ice pack with a wash cloth around it on the floor that he keeps laying on. he has plenty of water and i am going to go buy Frosty Paws tonight. what else can i do? he is a 6 year old 7 pound pomeranian... and hes black... which makes it a little worse. any suggestions??

Some folks freeze yogurt as a cool treat. My boys LOVE their yogart. I mist them with a water bottle, and put out a kiddy wading pool on the really hot days. i take a wash cloth to their bare tummies too.. that helps. I guess getting the paw pads wet and cool is another help as well. And I give them fresh icewater twice daily.. better make that clear.. lol they always have water but i put FRESH icewater down twice a day.. yah, that sounds better lol

he is getting a cheat strip on his belly on friday to cool him down and all of his massive hair trimmed.. and GREAT news!!! he LOVES Frosty Paws!!! hooorayy! although i thought he would, the dog will eat anything! plus with it not being real people ice cream there isnt any dairy... so no upset tummy... and another good thing is that he is so small, and the ice cream is kind of expensive... but it will last him a LONG time.. there are 4 servings, but those servings are really big and for him one serving is like 7 servings lol.. anyway .. thank you all for replying so fast, i appreciate it

Frosty paws are ice cream for dogs with no dairy in it.. dairy can upset your dogs tummy... and these dont have all the sugar of people ice cream either. i bought mine from a super wal mart.. for $3 or $4 ... it has 4 ice cream servings.. but for my tiny dog those servings are huge. and Rocky gobbled it down .. even stuck his paw in it to make sure it wouldnt slide away.. LMAO it was sooo cute!

There are also mats that you can buy for the dog to lay on that are supposed to keep them cool, but they are on the expensive side (for me anyway). JBpet and Fosters & Smith have them online - don't know if I can find them cheaper anywhere else. They also sell bandanas, vests etc. with the water absorbing beads in them that are also supposed to help.
The last issue (I think) of the Whole Dog Journal has an article on what to watch for in the summer heat. I think the key is to remember that dogs don't always let you know if they are getting tired when they are playing, any have been know to frisbee until they drop. You need to watch for signs of fatigue showing up more quickly than usual when the weather is hot/humid, and make sure you have lots of water handy. |

I exercise my girls early in the morning or late at night in the summer. I also make sure that they have fresh, cold water available at all times and in almost every part of the house. Next summer we'll be buying doggie ice cream (including freeze-dried) and pudding.....and I hope to get back to the doggie beach too.

I tried the homemade frosty paws listed in another thread (same as above but no banana) and added a few crushed carob chips. The girls really liked them. We also give plenty of icewater and water frozen in a 2 liter soda bottle. And AC or tiled floors that retain coolness are the fav places to nap on or in front of.

The most important thing is to make sure their is alot of water available and that it never runs out. I just tried the cooling collars for dogs was supposed to sell them this weekend at an outdoor event but was rained out. But I wanted to try them on me and the dogs they worked good lasted about 5 hours staying cool then needs reactivation. We have a small bathroom and the dogs stay in their we put down a marble floor and the dogs are always in their since it seems to stay cool as I think most tile. Good luck staying cool. Also remeber when walking your dog outside dont let them srink from any puddles in the summer cars still leak anti-freeze which is deadly for dogs too.

We have central air in the house but since we are travelling with the dogs we bring portable, battery operated crate fans I found good ones at cleanrun.com.
I have heard lots of people like the frozen water bottles, often putting then in a pillow case and putting them like bolsters in the crate/bed. We also use a plastic kiddie pool in the yard. Some people mist their dogs with a spray bottle. |
