Scary!

This morning I let the boys out as usual and left them loose in the yard to run around like crazy fools while I prepared breakfast for them. Mmmm kibble in water with raw egg LOL I fed the boys and left them loose while I went back in to answer the phone. Just after I got off the phone I hear a frantic knock at the door. Strange. We have a doorbell, why are they knocking? I open the door and no one is there but the knocking continues. I realize it was coming from the garage door. I open it and there''s my neighbour with her baby in her arms. My heart leapt into my throat but a quick look at the baby determined he was unharmed so I took a deep breath and that''s when my neighbour told me "Ronan's loose!" F*CK!

I ran past her out the door and franticaly search all around. Where did he go? Did he go for a run on his own taking our usual path? Did he go home? Did he go running through construction to chase the seagulls? "There he is!" my neighbour exclaimed pointing to the path behind my house. I told him to come but knew it was of no good. Ronan''s a husky through and through, he''s very oportunistic. With a smile on his face and a glint in his eye he dashed off into the weeds and leapt into the pond. My stomach sank, "great now whenever I do finally catch him he's gonna stink to the high heavens!" (the pond behind our place is one of the grossest bodies of water known to man...even worse than lake michigan!).

Not knowing what else to do I called out "Ronan! Wanna go running? Wanna go for a car ride?" My neighbour had her truck door open but of course it''s a strange vehicle so he was having none of it. And that running suggestion? He didn''t care, he was already running! I prayed he wouldn't dash out to the street as I was coming to my wits end! I dunno what made me try it but as he came zooming down the path again past our yard I called out "Ronan, haw!" and as if he were attached to a dogsled he turned left directly towards me! I was baffled! But only for a split second until I dove at him hugging him close to me.

When the dust settled and I opened my eye to find myself laying on Ronan puffing away with the biggest smile on his face, OC running back and forth along the fence line creating a huge fuss, and my neighbour shaking her head exclaiming "I''m so glad you caught him!" Oh ya and my nostrils turning up from the disgusting stench of pond scum eminating from the gleeful pup beneath me.

I picked him up and shoved him in the garage temporarily. I asked my neighbour how he got out. She said she had her son on the ground while she was hanging laundry and Ronan was darting back and forth along the fence. Then out of nowhere he stuck his nose under the chainlink and pushed himself through. He raan straight for her son so she scooped him up and Ronan ran past to start his adventure.

I explained to her that as scary as it looks Ronan wasn''t going towards her son to harm him. Had he gotten to him he''d be trying to lick the crumbs off her sons face. I could tell there was uncertainty in her eyes which I wasn''t surprised to see. I know Ronan can look very scary and intense. I promised her Ronan would not be in the yard without direct supervision again. She says it''s no big deal and he has a right to be in his own yard. Today I''m going out and getting a tie out cable for him. He can be loose when someone''s outside but if whoever''s watching him has to go in for a minute he goes on the cable. It''s not fair for my neighbour to have to worry about my dog. I hate tie outs but Ronan''s really good on them and it''s not like he''ll be on it all the time. Uf! What a dog!

That was some adventure, especially just starting your day. Glad it ended ok and your not having to jump in the stinky ol pond to save him.

Ronan you naughty boy!! Yikes! What caos! I'm glad you finally caught him though. I guess those mushing commands come in handy sometimes... hopefully it never happens again. But if it does hope he listens to those commands!

Glad to hear you have an understanding neighbor. If you want to prevent this you can run a very taught (and high strength) wire through the bottom rung of the fence. It should help prevent the fence from giving so much at the bottom, or you can try some carefully placed stakes to keep the bottom taught.

Glad everything turned out well

Mulroony, there IS a ight wire along the bottom LOL My dad talked about burying some extra chainlink into the ground and I was given a great tip on another forum to get horshoe-shaped stakes and put them into the ground about every three links or so.

LOL Sarah said it just right. All of them are way too smart. I always fogired him for being one to get out by going over a fence which is why I was comfortable considering we have a 6ft fence. Ah well these guys do also like to keep their owners on their toes.
