Homeless Shelter Dog Facilities

I was doing my thing at the Boulder homeless shelter this evening and I spent several minutes with one of the residents who had a very large 2 yr old German Shepherd Dog. The GSD was a cutie so I let her slobber all over me. Our shelter has facilities for the dogs of residents -- they are just crates located away from the residents but at least they can keep their animals out of the severe cold and out of animal shelters. Also, everyone gets a good meal in the evening. (Boulder, Colorado is a great place to be homeless.)

Although I'd like to see these pets in better digs, I firmly believe that having a pet is a way to improve well-being of many homeless people. The pets always seem to be very healthy, happy, and socialized too. Do you have these kind of facilities for your homeless dog owners? If so, what are they like in your neck of the woods?

What a wonderful shelter! Our shelters here do not provide any sort of arrangements for pets although I wish they would! It's nice to see your shelter taking a leading role in keeping families together with their fur kids!

My community doesn't really have a homeless shelter.

We do, however, offer foster care for pets of victims of domestic violence. We work with a group called Safe Passage. They try to help families in abusive situations. Oftentimes, the reason the victim hasn't left is because they can't figure out how to get their pet out of the situation as well. We offer to take care of the animal, and Safe Passage helps the humans get out of there and on their own two feet.
