Exactly Cass.....people follow whatever the celebs do and it just makes things worse. People just don't think....dogs (or animals in general) are not "disposable"....the are a lifetime commitment. There are so many people that don't understand that concept. It's soooo irritating.

Bigdoglover, you are so right that many people don't understand that dogs aren't disposable, and are lifetime commitments. Tasmo was a target for people asking if they could buy him from me. And I mean BUY him, no questions asked. Horrible stuff. The people never even asked about him, either. They just looked at him, liked the way he looked (or obviously liked something about him, I don't quite know what), and made an offer, like I had a big "For Sale" sign hanging on him! One time a guy even pulled out a whole wad of cash trying to get me to trade. It was not only a shock to me, but a downright insult, like a slap in the face. So far, nobody has asked for Bitty, lol. But now I'm living in a different place, where people seem to at least know the concept of dogs being family. I'd probably lose it on the person who asked, after all I've been through with her, and what I went through with Tasmo.

It's a sick situation, and hopefully one day, all puppy mills and byb's will be shut down.

The new Giant Schnauzer I am getting is a rescue, of sorts. Someone imported her from the Czech Republic, and decided they didn't like her, for whatever reason. She has never been groomed, and is matted to the skin. Her ears were cropped (she is 2 1/2 now) and they were done too short. Plus, she has soooo much hair that my husband couldn't even find her ears in the beginning. All he could say to me on the phone was "Honey, you have got to help this dog. She is like velcro on me, and is real sweet, but I know these matts are hurting her." I wanted to cry. He said her beard looked like dred-locks and the hair on her rear end is sooo matted that she stinks. He is doing his best to hurry home....but he can only go so fast!! I can't wait til she gets here though!!

But my point is that a lot of people just don't care. "It's just a dog." is what I hear most often. Makes me sick, too.

seeing that site really made me sick to my stomache I really hate people that are like that. I hear people talking all the time about how they have to get rid of their dogs because they just don't like them or something. It really makes me mad, I think people like that should be banned instead of certain dogs being banned ...GRRRRRRR

I am glad to hear about you rescuing her I am doing everything I can not to cry right now she sounds like a wonderful dog in a bad situation, poor girl. I hope that everything goes well with her and after a good grooming you'll be ableto see the beautiful dog beneath all those matts, I feel so bad for her.

I can't wait for her to get here!! Just like WOC does with their dogs, these people neglected her. I think I'm going to have to shave her beard, too, which is going to look funn until it grows out again. I'm hoping to be able to come it out though!!

Wingedfoal, I can't believe someone actually pulled out a wad of cash for Tasmo.....oh wait, yes I can!! People are so rude and uncaring. I would hate to think what his intentions were with Tasmo....scary thought. But had you been just someone who wanted/needed money, with no thought for your baby, you would have taken the cash on the spot. The sad thing is, there are more people out there that would have done that than you think!!!!!

Speaking of puppymills....friends of ours (Mom is friends with the mom, Jacob and I are friends with the girl my age, and Wes is best buds with the son, so we just call him our brother and his true family his "foster parents" lol) just bought a 10week old Shih Tzu from the Petstore. Cutest little dog in the world, but I don't think they did much research on the breed, because I told them that Shih Tzus are normally hard to house break and the mom was like, "Great." She also told Mom that she didn't know anything about Shih Tzus. They got rid of their last dog (a Lab pup) because they didn't have time for her. But hopefully since Shih Tzus don't need a lot of exercise, they won't have a problem.
And they did say that when they go on vacation (like almost for half of the month of July) I might be watching the puppy!! And then she said that she'd let me housebreak it too, so.....lol

You are going to have to get pics of your new girl when you can! I love the look of the Schnauzer, especially the Giant.

People are rude and uncaring, and that's why there's things like WOC (and the people who wanted Tasmo)! No respect for the animal. They can't possibly, because what respectful person could sell a dog over the internet, based on looks alone!?

Many of the people who wanted Tasmo thought he was a "miniature pit bull" (the people's words exactly), and thought they could really use him for some "fun" stuff, I'm guessing. I hate to even think about what his life would've been like had I not cared about what happened to him (and I shudder even more at the thought of his mental disorder kicking in - the one causing him to attack random people, including me - when he was in an uncaring person's care.... his life would have been a pure hell). I think he attracted these people because he had a tough dog walk, and always watched a stranger like he was guarding. He was intimidating to many people, even if he was only fifteen pounds.

I'm not going to say I didn't need money at those times, because ironically, those were the times I needed money most. It's just that I cared too much about what happened to my little man, and I'm glad I was able to be there until the end for him. I'm pretty positive I can say that those other people wouldn't have done the same. They reflect WOC.... They don't really care about the outcome as long as they can get what they want.

Here is one of my conversations with one of their employees, I'll post it here for those of you that didn't see it in the other thread and don't want to go throuhg pages looking for it...this was a while ago...("you" is me)

Maija: Welcome to Wizard of Claws, how can I help you today?
you: Hi, I was just wondering if you test on the parents--health tests
you: I mean, some of the puppies look awfully small
you: Oh, and do Chihuahuas get along well with kids? Because if I got one, it would be around a lot of younger children...just don't know if its "safe" yet
Maija: yes
you: Yes...?
you: You do health tests?
Maija: yes they get along with children
you: I'm sort of worried about them hurting the dog though...breaking its bones and all
Maija: the puppies you see that are small are suppose to be small
you: What are pocketbooks and teacups?
you: They look almost the same as the slightly larger animals
Maija: ok maybe you would need a toy size puppy
you: Yes, maybe
you: I wouldn't want to lose a puppy so quick
Maija: which breed were you looking at
Maija: i understand
you: Well, I'm not sure exactly...they are all very nice.
you: Your Labs don't look like most I've seen though....
you: Are they purebred?
Maija: yes all of our pups are purebred unless it's a mix
you: Their ears look a little far back....
Maija: are you looking at the labs or labradoodles
you: what in the world is a labradoodle?
Maija: the male or females ears look back
you: Oh I see....lab and poodle mix....labradoodle....
Maija: labradoodles are labs and poodle mix
you: Wouldn't you just forward customers to shelters to save a mix?
Maija: no because we have several mix breeds
Maija: mixed puppies is very common now
you: But wouldn't it be better for people to save those mixes in shelters--there are the exact same mixes that you have at your kennel
Maija: some not all
you: Is this breeding for money or to help the breed...such as boxers. I have never seen a toy Boxer until I came to your website, and I would definitely worry about the dog. I really prefer breeds as they are, not miniaturized and such
you: It just seems strange
Maija: well there is a big market for downsizing popular breeds
Maija: alot of people want to take their pets with them
you: That is possible--they don't have to be in bags, do they? There are several small breeds. Like Chihuahuas. Do they need to be made smaller, into "teacups
you: ?
you: Yorkshires are quite small too.
Maija: we cater to what society is looking for
you: I don't get the point other than for money, which most reputable breeders, as far as I know, would not care much about. They just want to make their breed better and produce great animals. They make sure everything is right
Maija: and yes they want a chihuahua that is 2.5 lbs full grown
you: Well, that just doesn't seem right to me...with about 7 million pets being euthanized in US shelters every single year....
you: Regular chihuahuas only weight about 6, correct? That is small enough for me...2 is too little!!
Maija: you have to keep in mind what you see on tv
Maija: everyone has their own preference
you: I don't see the point of your business other than to make money. To me it does not seem as if the breeders care much about the dogs
you: They're just breeding because they'll make money!
Maija: any business is to make money
you: No
you: Not for reputable breeders
you: They breed great dogs, do lots of health tests...
Maija: they are in it to make money also
you: Somewhat
you: But they CARE about their breed
Maija: they do not give their puppies away for free
you: Money comes last
Maija: we do to
you: Of course not
Maija: because of size
Maija: i worked for a vet
you: Your purebreds look nothing like those I have seen in shows etc.
Maija: size has nothing to do with health
you: It certainly does
Maija: we are not selling puppies for shows
Maija: no it does not
you: I have heard that smaller dogs from breedres, not reputable, can be very sick
Maija: once again i worked for a vet
you: Obviously not--they look nothing like purebreds
Maija: your opinion
Maija: everyone is entitled to one
you: Not show quality either...or breeding quality if you really think about it....
you: Yes
Maija: Sharon Osbourne hasn't complained yet after purchasing 7 pups from us
you: But to me, you are in this JUST for the money. I don't appreciate that, along with so many others I am sure. I prefer not to support bad breeders like yours
Maija: neither has Jeff Gordon
you: Yes, but I know for a fact that the Osbournes are lame
you: idiots
you: Celebs are full of themselves--and don't think
Maija: if it wasn't for money
Maija: what is it for
you: So what if they purchased from you? They could've purchased healthier pups from a reputable
you: They better the breed, reputables
you: For that matter they could've purchased healthy, show quality dogs from a GREAT breeder
Maija: we sell quality purebred pups for companions to people who choose to buy them
you: I don't believe that
you: So bad
you: I am surprised your vet approves the dogs...
you: Did he even go to school?? Gosh...
Maija: because they are healthy
Maija: one of the best in the country
you: If the vets I know checked them, they would most definitely say unhealthy
you: That I seriously doubt. I wouldn't trust him
Maija: has been all over the world
Maija: has written several books and published them
you: Well obviously he knows nothing about good breeding then...
you: Those I would not read but burn
Maija: your opinion
Maija: well i have to go now to sell some more healthy puppies
Maija: sorry you feel the way you do
you: Reputable breeders do not breed mixes--you obviously care nothing about those in shelters
you: Don't feel sorry for me--you have no reason to
Maija: maybe our puppies are not in your price range
you: Oh they are

I don't see the point in talking to the sales people of WoC or any of those puppy stores. They're just employees who are probably given a whole list of things to say or directions to take the conversation, if they get someone who's a little hostile towards the company.
It would be far better to deal with the owners of the company/stores and also target the breeders who supply them and the celebs who buy.

It would be awesome to get a high profile celeb on our side to fight against the mis-information that most people have.

I also heard recently that small "froo froo" dogs (ie: tiny fashion accessory dogs) were out of fashion. I know it's a silly thing to hope for, but I hope (if this is true) this means that the number of people buying them will drop.

Cass.

Think they'd get in any trouble for having the little intro part of some of the breeds copied and pasted directly from the AKC website? I haven't cross-checked all of them, but it is worth looking into. I know the Doberman one is word for word, and now I'm checking some of the others.

What do you think?

Those conversations don't achieve much. Whoever you talk to is just rolling their eyes, passing some time. I detest that site, I won't go anywhere near it.
