A-w-w...today I was so proud of Leeeeeery. LOL. (Lyric)
The four dogs and I took our walk all around the golf course. Then I put the three adults in the car for a little while. They had had enough. But not Leeeery. He need some more zoomies. So we went around some more and then I put on his leash. We zig zagged all over the place, heeling, this way and that. Then I told him how wonderful he was and turned him loose again. He chased a stick and bounced around like a lunatic. Then I told him from about 30 feet away, "halt!" (a new thing I just started working on like yesterday) He stopped dead in his tracks. LOL. I hollered out, "goooood halt. Wait" Then I walked over and snapped the leash on again and we did some more zig zagging/heeling and some sit stay and down stays. I've also been showing him what the silent whistle means in connection to the recall so we practiced that. He gets a series of short intermittent whistles. Bonnie and Jose get a long drawn out whistle. And Chulita is always so close to me she doesn't need a whistle. LOL. Then I hid behind a tree while he was lying down and staying. He got to chew on a stick meanwhile. I kept popping my head out and saying, "good down/good stay." He did splendidly. Then we got to get some more zoomies and romping. Then back to work again, this time heeling with no leash. I just zigged and zagged and he did a fantastic job. Wooooo hooooo. (And shame on me..I forgot treats!)Anyhow, if you have a dog that's easily distractable like Lyric, that's one way to do it....a few skills for 3 or 4 minutes, then some play time and running, then back to work for another few minutes. Break up the training sessions. They still learn and have fun while they're doing it. Another time he'll be expected to pay attention for a longer, (usually we do it all at one chunk of time) but this gives him the practice with the skills and makes him think it's all good. It also makes him not worry about coming to me or having me go to him to have the leash put on. He knows he'll get turned loose again soon. LOL. |

Thank you Sheltie pups. Yes, but the real trouble will come when we have to do this amongst some hard to resist distractions. LOL. The other day he started running after my niece's neighbor's dog and another dog (which is normally OK cuz they have played together before) but this time I didn't want him to because the other dog is quite young and Lyric is not that familiar with her. So I called him and it didn't look like he was going to and then viola.....he came. But he's not reliable that way so that will have to be a whole new hurdle a little further down the road. LOL.

Thanks Flyndog! He had another good day. We're turning up the juice on the training. I was kind of lazy the past couple of months, plus Lyric sort of was brain dead too....must have been that 10 -13 month teenagehood. He seems to have gotten his brain back. This time there were some workers out on the golf course. They're putting in some new water lines and sprinkler system. They had some back hoes and stuff so he had a little distraction going on. Those things didn't seem to interest him at all. He just did his thing. LOL.

Thanks Lil'Paws. How are you doing? My, you must have had a hard time.
Bonnie is feeling just fine...no more seizures so far. Her blood level of bilirubin is no better but so far she seems to feel good. We go on our walks and she gallops, trots and wags. LOL. She is still very cheerful and silly. 13 yrs old and mentally often still very puppyish. That is a Lab for ya. LOL. thank you for your nice reply. Let us know how you've been getting on too. |
