Harley + new home = sad Barrett
We gave Harley to a friend of mine who just lost her senior dachshund to liver disease. My friend helped me rescue Harley. She has even helped pay Harley's vet bills this last year, even though we could afford it. She just wanted to help. She baby-sat Harley every day for weeks after her surgery, when I had to go to work and my husband was off on his trips. We have dachshund play dates every week. She has always been a part of Harley's life and she loves her as much as we do. My husband and I thought it was the right thing to do when we offered Harley to her. She accepted the offer without a second thought and now I am thinking....What did we do?
I dropped Harley off tonight along with a huge box of toys, blankies, doggie pillows and food. I cried when I had to leave and now the house feels too empty. Lucy is whimpering for her buddy and pacing around. They live less than 20 miles away and we see each other twice a week for play dates. I know I will get to see Harley when ever I want and I can baby-sit her any day I choose but I am still so sad. I already asked if Harley can sleep over this weekend. LOL. I also get to continue to take her to obedience classes and socialize her. I suppose this is what it feels like to Moms when kids go off to college and move out. I should have just bought her a puppy! Barrett |

You are truely generous to give your dog to your friend, it's just such a selfless act of kindness!
It must be hard not having her with you permanently anymore, but at least you'll still be able to see her a lot. |

Ohhh how very hard this has to be on you Barrett but what an awesome thing to do. I know how very tough it is to put a dog in another home after they've been with you through the good and bad, it's very much like having a child go off to college or just move out.
Your such a kind person Barrett, this is going to be tough but hang in there and you'll start seeing all the wonderful things that come from this that will bring nothing but smiles. I agree with Linnie too that Harley has the best of both worlds.... Two families who love her dearly and how many dogs can claim that? Hang in there ![]() |

You acted out of love for your friend and for Harley...knowing that both would benefit from each other and without regard to your own love for Harley. Such selfless gifts are priceless and I admire you greatly for the gesture.
I know all of you will miss Harley but at least they are close by and you know deep down you did the right thing...bless your heart! |

We already emailed, but I wanted to respond anyhow. That is a most selfless gift for your friend. Harley will be loved and well cared for. I know you'll miss her but at least you get to stay involved with her and see her often. The other weiners will be OK soon. Things will level out. You'll see. You did a wonderful thing. This dog (as opposed to a new puppy) probably has some special significance to your friend and you because of the hardship you both have pulled her through. There's an extra bond there, I bet. So, I think it was the right thing to do, and a most generous thing to do.
It will be OK... |

I really know it was the right thing to do but I still wish I would have bought her a puppy. LOL!! I got a lump in my throat when I woke up and realized it wasn't a dream. Bruce says we can spend more quality time with Bailey and Lucy now. Harley has taken up a lot of our time and we don't go do as much with Lucy and Bailey because Harley can't run or even walk as fast as they do. We tend to do more stuff that Harley can do. I'm sure this was the right decision and I'll feel better tomorrow about it. Thanks guys.

You are a wonderful friend and doggie mom to be able to make such a selfless decision. I am sure your friend knows how much both Harley & her mean to you and that this was a decision made with lots of love. Harley may not be with you daily but just think of how much fun the upcoming visits will be. Bless you! |

I'm with everyone else, you did a wonderful thing. And I totally understand your heartache.
It made me sad hearing Harley had gone to a new home, too! But your hubby is right, it will give you guys a chance to focus on Bailey and Lucy, and I'm sure they'll enjoy it. May your heart heal quickly, and the joy of doing something so kind take its place! Thinking of you. |

Thanks guys. I am feeling a little better already. My friend has called 3 times today to thank me.
I know how happy she is to have Harley with her. She is the one who adopted Harley the same day I adopted Lucy from the pound. Lucy and Harley are practically littermates, from the same backyard breeder and only 20 days apart in age. She got Harley for her sister but her sister didn't take very good care of her. She gave Harley to me because she thought a puppy would be hard on her senior dachshund who was already sick. She wanted Harley first but I ended up with her. So I know Harley should really be her dog and not mine...even though I love her and I wish it was different. I am happy I got Harley for the time that we had her and I know I still get to see her when ever I want. I also know this will be a very good thing for Lucy and Bailey. Two dogs are so easy but 3 makes it a tiny bit harder to split the attention. Harley gets spoiled one-on-one attention now too. ![]() |

I can only echo what everyone else has said! What a generous, unselfish gift! I'm sure Harley will love the one-on-one attention, and Lucy and Bailey will adjust in no time.
I know it's hard, but hang in there. Everything will be okay! |
