My son was born 5 weeks early and he tried his best, but he just couldn't do it. Once I gave him a bottle there was no turning back.
My babies were born 3 weeks late and they were still lazy little suckers......still are! My daughter almost could have starved. She looked like she was doing it, felt like she was a barracuda, but she wasn't doing it right...never did catch on. LOL.

OMG! u see wat happens when a woman is this crazy!!!!!

The baby is in foster care and the dog at a shelter

That is insane that she would care more for the pup than the human child! (now dont get me wrong, pups are important to but humans are higher! lol)

Whilst I do think this is a little gross, I wonder if we would be so appauled if it were the other way around. If a dog had fed a human baby? I'm sure we would be stunned but be amazed that a dog would care for one of our own.
The thought behind her action is a little odd. She wanted the dog to grow up with her daughter and protect her, but I really doubt she was harming the pup. I also doubt she cared any less for her baby, just because she was allowing the pup to suckle twice a day.
Also take into account the fact that we also drink milk that is not our own, we drink cows, goats & sheeps milk as well as eating products made from it. No, we're not suckling the very breast of the animals but we're still drinking what comes out of there. Perhaps if she had expressed the milk and bottle fed the pup with it, that have been more acceptable?
I'm not condoning it, it would never have occured to me to do this myself and honestly I have to say I wouldn't do it even now that that story is forever burned into my brain. Also, I agree that if the pup wasn't even weaned from its mother yet, she will probably have problems with it later on (as I believe people often do with hand raised pets... but I could have been misinformed there) and she is creating a bond between the herself and the pup rather than a bond with the pup and her daughter (which is what she wanted) so it may end up that the pup will be aggressive towards what it thinks of as it's 'lower ranked' sibling. Although, we don't personally know how much socialising this dog has been given, it may be that she is making sure the dog is very well socialised with her family and friends. *shrugs*
Also the New Zealand SPCA have already checked on dog (apparently she has 2 puppies) and it was fine. It wasn't taken off her.

Quote:
Staff from the Hastings Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals have visited two Staffordshire bull terrier puppies owned by the pregnant Ms Tumanako.

Hastings SPCA chairman Janet Mitchell said yesterday that staff had gone to a home where the two puppies were being cared for in the last couple of days after getting a call to check on them. The puppies, which were six or seven weeks old, needed to have vaccinations but were otherwise fine.

"We are satisfied with their condition and care at the moment," Ms Mitchell said. There was no indication yet that the SPCA would be asked to find new homes for them.
Ms Tumanako revealed this week that she was breastfeeding a puppy twice a day and wanted the dog to grow up to protect her baby daughter.
I don't think she did anything wrong (weird, YES! Wrong, no) as far as the health of the pup is concerned and I don't think she should be dismissed as crazy. Perhaps just ignorant, as far as dog behaviour is concerned.

As for the fox eating guy..... EWWW! Poor fox!

Cass.

I don't think that it was wrong either, however I do think it is pretty strange....whatever, she was/is taking care of puppies. At least she's not starving them.

I read this story on another news site and they said it was a Staffordshire Terrier, then incorrectly stated that was the same thing as a pitbull

Gosh, don't act all smart if you really aren't....I have heard people say SO MANY things about dogs that are incorrect. A relative was shocked that a Lab mix had attacked a child, but wasn't shocked that along with that dog a Shepherd mix and Pit Bull had attacked too.....

This was debated to death elsewhere and most people were sooo disgusted.
One mammal feeding the young of another. It happens often enough. Was it not she wolf who suckled Romulus and Remus, who then went on to build Rome?
So what? Provided hygiene is taken care of, if it is practical and nobody gets hurt, nothing wrong with it. Strange, yes. Disgusting, not really.Whether she will achieve what she set out to do is doubtful. Which begs the question. Why do it?
In Britain the fox hunting issue has grown completely out of proportion. It is bizare. I dont think it has much to do with foxes at all. I think it is a social issue, attempt to stamp out what is seen as the class prerogatives. Fox is a handy excuse.Artists must make their point in dramatic, attention seeking ways, lest they be ignored. And he did have one good point. We care for others as much as they care for us, which is not much at all.Not that eating a fox will change it. Again, why do it?
