His conditions will have to improve gradually or he'll go into shock, so it'll be awhile until we have a nice, clean, healthy tank. I'm also going to move him to my 5 gal. with filtration.

I love your son's betta's name! Too cute! I guess my fishie will need a name, too.

Shadow, as wierd as it sounds, check your local shelters and classifieds first. It's not common necessarily, but you can occasionally find a Betta that needs a new home. It's so strange that people can't even commit to caring for one little fish for it's maybe 2 year lifespan!!

Smile

I love Bettas! My daughter had a rescued Betta that lived over 2 yrs.
I found a wonderful website to learn all about them & to ask questions.

This is how Bettas are shipped, I assume to chain stores and pet shops. Pretty amazing that Bettas even live at all. Taken from: http://www.aquariacentral.com/forums...ad.php?t=82729

Oh! for pete's sake...how can the poor thing live? I feel kinda silly now...I thought Sushie didn't have enough water but he sure had a sight more than those in the picture!
I also remember being told that budgies are shipped stuffed into a small card board roll... I thought humans were supposed to be the " superior" species...sure makes me wonder.

Bettas in the wild actually live in puddles in rice fields.
I never heard of the Parakeet thing???

From answers.com:

"There is a stereotype that in the wild, bettas live in tiny muddy pools, and therefore that it is acceptable, even kind, to keep them in bowls and small tanks. In reality, bettas live in vast paddies, the puddle myth originating from the fact that during the dry season, the paddies can dry out into small patches of water. It is not a natural state of affairs by any means, and in the wild, fish trapped in such puddles are likely to die in a short period of time when they dry out."
