The Dog's Sixth Sense

My mum was telling me a couple of weeks ago that a woman at her work was taking her dog for a walk along the rocks (cliffs) of a beach. At one point the woman had stopped jogging, looked around and couldn't find her dog anymore, and was extremely worried that something bad had happened.

She spent hours searching and looking everywhere(with the help of other people), and finally came across her dog - standing on the very edge of the cliff, just looking down. The woman was hesitant to approach her dog because she thought he might slip. She heard this weird noise coming from down below the cliff. She called her dog and he wouldn't come.

She looked over the edge of the cliff and there was a small puppy, sitting on a ledge, crying. Her dog wouldn't leave the sight of this puppy! People were able to abseil down and rescue the puppy from the awkward spot, and save it from death. This puppy had been reported as missing for 4 days! My mum's workmate felt quite shook up for the rest of the day.

It's just amazing how caring dogs can be - they truely have something special about them. It is all thanks to her dog's persistance that this little puppy was able to be saved.

That's so odd that you bring that up. I had my own slightly eerie moment a few nights ago.

I woke up in the middle of the night after an odd dream. In my dream, I saw Saboo trotting out the bedroom door (always closed at night), and straight out the front door (obviously closed at night as well). I woke up because it was kinda freaky.

When I woke up, Saboo wasn't in my bed. She wasn't on the chair either. In fact, our bedroom door was open. I started to go downstairs in a bit of a panic. She met me at the foot of the stairs. I breathed a sigh of relief and scooped her up to take her back to bed. Her ears and feet were freezing. I peered around the corner. The front door was wide open.

I closed it, locked it, and carried her back to bed. I fully believe that when there's that much of a bond between dog and human, there's some sort of weird... connection. Saboo was putting herself in danger and I woke myself up to do something about it.

How eerie is that! I do agree that dogs have a special sense of their surroundings and imminent dangers that we miss for whatever reason.
They are God's angels on four legs!

I think dogs are amazing. They're my absolute favourite animals....but...I don't believe they have a 'sixth sense'.
They simply are better at body language and have better hearing and vision than us and I think people generally underestimate their intelligence and ability so that what would be normal for a person suddenly becomes extraordinary for a dog.

The puppy over the cliff was probably easy to hear for the dog, maybe the smell was easy to scent too. And I see no reason why the dog shouldn't be concerned by the distress of another of its kind.

The front door open could have let in all sorts of sounds and smells (and cold air) that was strange to Saboo...so it's no wonder she was attracted to it. And the dream you had was probably your memory kicking in, along with you hearing or sensing (since she slept on your bed) the dog leaving the room.

I hope this doesn't sound like I'm minimizing what happened, but I just think that none of these things that happen are from some sixth sense but rather proof that dogs are naturally intelligent animals.

Cass.

Yes, I don't actually believe it's a 'sixth sense', so to speak - but people can relate to that term very well. They are much more intune with their senses, and can pick up on so many things that we can't (such as cancer).
