Eyes = Mirror to the soul

So, I have known about this college for over a year now that I was thinking about applying to. It's a college to certify you a professional dog trainer/behaviorist.
I went ahead the other day and gave it a shot to request more information. I spoke with an admission's counselor today and I'm VERY excited about this place. It's pretty much a "self study"/online course. It takes about 60 weeks , and I'm required to do atleast one hour of study a day (which is no problem because I'm on the computer 99% of the time anyways)and I can do more if I'd like. The first half involves the basic study of canines, learning the behaviors of the specific breeds, developmental periods, socialization, etc. The next step is on theory. Understanding how animals learn and different training strategies. Next step is learning about different training tools that I may be required to use, such as collars, leashes, clickers, etc. Next is learning training basics, such as what may be specific genetic behaviors and characteristics in dogs. Next will be how to teach basic obedience commands, with articles written by Karen Pryor. The next stages is safety, public speaking/teaching group classes, business building, shelter practicum & externship (I will get to work at a shelter using clicker training techniques to help dogs become more adoptable by working out some behavior issues, or giving them some basic manners ---- i then will work alongside a training mentor assisting in classes or private sessions in teaching the basic cues), and finally I will have to pass a final exam which I will then be certified as a dog trainer. The tuition is something that I am definetly able to afford, and my brother is going to help me with it. She explained all of the avenues I will have if I persue this as my career, and said that the need for trainers is very high now-a-days. Especially in my area (nobody is afraid to spend money on their dogs). She was very impressed that I have trained all of my dogs myself, as well as having people come to me asking for help with training. On top of it all, they are all positive reinforcement. They want the dog to REPEAT a behavior because it was rewarded and not to avoid a behavior because of a punishment. If I give her the okay, she will set me up with a proctor in my area to give me a short test as part of applying for the college. I will keep you all posted on what happens. After really speaking with her, I'm very very excited about this and it sounds like something I really would like to do. I just thought I would share this all with you ![]() ETA: I just want to thank all of you here that have helped me learn all that I have. I wouldn't know as much as I do now if it weren't for you guys I have to say this place has been a tremendous learning area for me. |

She's going to call me back tomorrow, because I told her I'd like to talk to my family about it. They're more than supportive and will back me up with any choice that I make, but I still find it appropriate to talk with my family.
My brother said he had no problem helping me with paying tuition, but he wants to make sure that things as fas bills and such were stable before I jump into it. He wants to have peace of mind that we don't have to worry about anything. Which I agree with. So, I'm going to explain to her about our financial situation (I'm paying for it, my brother is just using his credit card) and find out when exactly it all starts and maybe they could work something out for me. *IF* I had given her a yes tomorrow, she would locate a proctor in my area and set me up to take the test, so I'm assuming I could enroll right away. She said I can do it before I graduate or after. I decided to do it before. |

That's really neat! Hey, could you PM me with the information for the online course? Dog training/behavior is something I'm very interested in and I've been interested in finding a thing like this. Thanks!

Yeah, I'm really excited about it, and I want to keep some money saved up so I can be ready once I enroll.
I cannot express how cool I think this is! I told my friends that you do all of your study at home and they were like "Are you sure you can do it since you're at home and not get distracted?" I assured them that it would be no problem and I probably would have a hard time NOT studying because I spend nearly all of my time on a dog forum anyways LOL |

Congrats! Just wondering where you found this program? Do you have a website you can share with me in a pm. I am really interested in starting a dog business eventually when I graduate and would love to be a dog trainer. My favorite thing in the world is dogs and I would love to have some kind of job working with them.

Thank you!
![]() My other choice was to become a vet, but I hate to see animals in pain, so I was still trying to really decide. It's like my aunt said though (she's a volunteer paramedic), when you have that type of training (for emergencies) you don't let your emotions get to you, and you just stick with what you were trained to do and try your best to help the animal. |

WOW, Congrats !! This sounds so exciting !
Ooh, could you please PM the site to me when you get a chance , prettty please ? I REALLY want to open a Boarding Kennel (desided down on the Cafe') and I'd love to offer training as part of it(Basic Obedience and Field Training). Besides, theres not very many trainers in Idaho and it's very difficult to find them too.. It would be great to just read about it, the program sounds great ! |

That sounds like an exciting opportunity for you, and something you'd really enjoy. Imagine how much knowledge you will gain if you undertake this course - it would be great (and I'm sure it would definitely come in handy)!
I used to want to be a vet when I was younger, but I'm the same as you, I can't stand seeing animals in pain.Good luck with making a decision! |
