Talking DogFancy's main breed this month was Greyhounds!!

YEY!!!!!!!! I've been wanting them to do a profile on Greyhounds for a long time!!! And since it was the main breed I have a poster now of two adorable brindle Greyhounds in my room!!!
It's pretty funny, I like the working breeds like the Boxers and Dobermans and such but I also like Sighthounds. They have completly different temperments but I like them both! (I guess the working breeds remind me of Blackie and the the Sighhounds (in looks and temperment) remind me of Rose.)
Anyways, I'm finally glad the did a profile on them!!

What the heck? I finally got my mag. and it turns out it's a December 2004 edition (and it says it's my last too). It features the Westie and the Sibe...

Fate just likes to bite me in the butt, huh? My first Greyhound, my beginning Sighthound obsession, and finally, a magazine featuring the Greyhound to complement my eccentricity The only problem is--I don't have the flipping mag (even when I renewed my subscription at least a month ago). I've been waiting for the Greyhound/Pekingese for years!!!!! *sigh* Alrighty, I'm off my soap box.

Hey guess what I got that mag. too!!!!! They are very pretty dogs but I prefere the smaller version either the Whippet or the Saluki. I think the Italian Greyhounds look to fragile, lol just my opinan. I probably would never be able to adopt a retiered Greyhound because it said on there profile that some see little pets or small dogs as prey adn I always want to have some small pet in my life.

anyway thats too bad unleess I ofund one that didn't chase my other pets. Anyway

did you see that one pict of the greyhound running when all its legs were crossed.....

No kidding. That was poetrey in motion. (LOL I think that is what they use to discribe the Scottish Deerhounds gait....oh well....lol)
Ya, I like Greyhounds too (Although my faves are the Ibizan Hounds and the Pharoah Hounds) and if we didn't have little kids in the house (a LOUD little kid named Melanie lol) and we had a fenced in yard, I'd want one.
Greyhounds and other sighthounds remind me of Rose because Rose looks like a smaller, stockier, brindle colored Greyhound. (If you strech you imagination a bit :P ) Her temperment is almost exactly like a Greyhound too. She is a bit timid, sensitive, loves to run (pretty fast too!), and thinks any small fast moving object is a rabbit.
LOL, I swear she thinks our cousins Dachshund is a hotdog (or a chew toy that barks) and that our neighbors Corgi is a barking rabbit! lol She is also fine with our cat unless he starts to run. Then Watch out Rush! lol

Just got my January 2005 issue sometime yesterday....I love how its got so much stuff on adoption and rescue--usually its all breedes, PLUS+ they have BYB ads in their breeder pages in the back....

ANYWAYS, yep. Jan '05 is Greyhound/Cocker Spaniel/Komondor. The December 2004 issue was good too--I LOVE WESTIES! When I saw they were going to feature them I was so happy--I have a friend who wants to get one, I'm going to buy her the December issue.

And its always nice to see some ads for good dog food (I am bonkers about this pet nutrition stuff). Sure, they've still got junky foods recommended in there, but I saw Solid Gold ads and Wysong too......

I'm going to write them and see if they'll have an article on puppy mills...maybe they'll get "Diva Pup" ads outta there too....

I'm fine with people liking Whippets over Greyhounds, but for God's sake---AT LEAST KNOW THE DIFFERENCES!!!!!! I've only have three people correctly guess Giselle. Everybody else thinks she's a Whippet. I even had a guy walk up to her all smart-a$$ and said "Well Hello, Mr. Whippet". *cringes* MISTER?! WHIPPET?!?! I didn't even bother correcting him. If he wanted to act like a smart-a$$ like I didn't know my own dog's breed and gender, then he can be my guest. At least some others had the courtesy to ask if she was a Whippet.

Regarding prey drive- There are plenty of Greyhounds who live with tiny critters. In fact, Giselle lives with a small, furry, white dog (perfect "bunny" dog, huh?), and 5 birds. But if you place her with a kittie, LOL don't count on her being Miss Politeness.

lol I think it is hard to tell the difference between a Whippet and a Greyhound aside from the size. Is there any other differnce between them?

Oh yeah, for me, at least. If you've been around Whippets and Greyhounds for a while, you learn very quickly how to recognize them. Greyhounds, generally, are more thickly built with a lot more muscle (AKC and NGA). They're a bit stockier and 'firmer' looking.
NGA: Their overall body structure is much more compact and focused on muscle. Their necks are stouter and they just look more work-oriented.
AKC: Their overall body structure is quite angular and their necks are LONG, and they sometimes have a barrel head. They're usually more elongated and fit a sculpture description. AKC hounds are very easy to differentiate with Whippets. Whippets, as a whole, are usually lightly built with not as much emphasis on musculature. Their backs curve more than greys (AKC and NGA). They're also smaller (as you all know), and much much lighter. The average Whippet is probably 20-23" (?), and the ones I've seen only weight 20-30 pounds. Giselle, OTOH, is 26" but 58 pounds. Big weight difference.

Ah, ok. I guess it is just like some people can't tell the bully breeds (i.e. Pitties, AmStaffs, Staffords, etc.) apart but I can! lol If I didn't know what kind of breed it was I would ask. Not just go up and say, 'Hey Mr. Whippet!" lol. (Some people.......lol) I just recently found out that our neighbors 'Flat coated Retriever' (that is what I thought it was because that is what she looks like) was a Lab/Chow mix! (Her tounge is purple! lol) I found that out because I was giving her a treat and she licked it out of my hand. (Doggy slobber! lol)

Yep, it's basically like that. At a glance, they look similar. But if you have a book that lists dog breeds, take the Greyhound and Whippet and flip between them. Then, look at the Iggy and Whippet, then Iggy and Greyhound. You'll begin to see that Iggies look more like Whippets and Whippets don't look as similar to Greyhounds as you thought. Greyhounds have a little Bulldog (not like today's Bulldog...The ones back then which looked like AmStaffs), so they don't look as curvy as Whippets and Iggies. They're much more angular, and this is especially true with AKC hounds. Don't worry, you'll see the differences soon.

Yep, I probably will. One of our neighbors has two retired Greyhounds and they are so adorable! One is a fawn and it looks like a small deer and the other (my favorite lol) has a shorter tail, half flop ears, and has a light brindle coloring on its back. The rest of it is a really light fawn/white. It is so cute and funny looking! lol
I didn't know Greyhounds had Bulldog in them! lol I guess you learn something new every day! lol
