Anyone work at a doggy day care?

I just applied for a job at a doggy day care. I want to get the heck out of the place I'm at now (Doctors office). I just don't find it interesting sitting behind a desk all day, doing all of the work that everyone else doesn't want to do. Plus, he doesn't run his business correctly.

SO, they had an ad in the paper for kennel help and that the person MUST love dogs Which is no problem for me LOL
But anyways, does/has anyone else worked at a doggy day care? Did you enjoy it?

They had the CUTEST brindle/white boxer puppy in the front. I wanted to sneak him out with me

I bet you will like it. I worked at a boarding kennel this summer which is very similar. It was alot of fun and i really enjoyed it. I drove my parents/friends crazy talking about all the dogs that were there. I got really attached to each of them. You will also have your share of unfriendly dogs. But overall it is awesome!

Alot of the ones at the place I worked at were regulars. A dog named Prince has been there for 4 months because his dad is in iraq. Everyone there is attached to Prince. Luckily even though I don't work there anymore (school) I still go there weekly and visit everybody since the owner also does puppy obedience (Lucy) and flyball (Maggie).

That's cool about going back to visit. I'm sure it's nice to know people involved in that business, incase you ever come across a time when you may need their assistance.

Wow! 4 months?? That's a long time, I bet he's going to be SOO excited to see his human daddy when he gets back!

Please keep us posted on your experiences. I'm seriously thinking about starting an at-home doggie day care. I would hire a few college kids to help out.

I work at a vet, kennel and doggy daycare place called Harmony Pet Care. I love to work there but I can only do the kennel shifts on the weekend as I have a full time job during the week. On my days off I'll go in and work the kennel shift and watch the ddc sometimes. As part of our interview process we have to spend part of the day in daycare to see how we can handle a pack of dogs all at the same time. All of the dogs that come into daycare have to go through a behavioral screening process to make sure that they are suitable for ddc. If I had the time to do ddc I would so do it. It's a lot of fun and hard work and great social time for the dogs. You get to meet and play with all kinds of different dogs and personalities. I get to sometimes do ddc on the weekends when we have ddc dogs that are boarding. It makes it easier on us when they have play sessions cause we can do them all at once instead of individually.

If you want to check it out here is a link to where I work:

http://www.centralbarkusa.com/hpc/ddc.htm

I work out of the Waukesha, WI location.

Here's a link to Harmony's photo album!

Hope this helps!

Thanks you guys.

I actually have a "trial day" today I called to follow up with the application, and they have the applicant come in to the "arena" (where they keep the dogs) to see how well they can handle a large group of dogs. She said this is the biggest way they can tell if someone will get the job because not everyone is able to handle a bunch of dogs getting excited and jumping all over them. I told her that I understand - having 4 big dogs myself and taking them to the dog park, I'm used to it. Hehehe.

So, wish me luck!

All our best wishes!

I wish we had a doggie daycare here for me to apply at! Or I wish I had room to do that type of thing myself.

Well.....

I got the job!

They put me in the arena for about a couple of hours with the dogs. They told me just keep the area clean, keep them from fighting, and PLAY WITH THEM <--- that was probably the hardest part

She said that's the way they can tell if the people really love dogs. If constant barking (at times), cleaning up pee and poop, and dogs jumping on you doesn't bother you, then you're a good candidate Which none of it was a problem for me.

She is starting me off at $7.50/hr and I have a 30 day "probation". If I do well with keeping the area clean, looking after the dogs, and being on time, I will get a raise to $8.00/hr. I will have another 30 days after that to have another chance at a raise.
I can work as much as 30 hours a week, or even more if I wanted.

I start on Tuesday.

It's amazing though... my dogs seem like complete angels compared to a few of the dogs that were there. LOL There was the cutest female dobie there. She had natural ears, and an uncropped tail... her coat was very dry and she wasn't very social with the other dogs, but one of the dogs was a big bully to her. She warmed up to me very quickly though and liked to hide behind me when the other dog would bark at her, so I'd do my best to keep him from doing that. I can see now that dobies are very much a velcro dog and like to be with their people.

ANYWAYS... I'm SOO happy!!!! Yay!!!

30 days probation is basically me having to show if I am really going to be good for what I'm doing. I have to be on time, keep the arenas clean, be sure I'm looking after the dogs really well, and if I do a good job, I get a raise. I guess you could say it's like "evaluating" me for 30 days. That's the way I look at it.

I'll have to see if I can bring in a camera to take pictures. I know some places won't let you unless you have permission from the owners.

Thanks!!
