Smooshed Nosed Breeds (brachy's)

So... I was told the other day that the dogs with the shortened muzzles got shortened muzzles originally from being confined to a cage that was too short, thus the nose didn't have anywhere to grow to???????????????

I thought that this didn't sound right...but who am I?

does anyone know how this brachycephalic (sp?) trait came to be???

That sounds a little....strange. I have no idea . BTW, love Boxers...met a girl named Lacey a few weeks ago--came back with Boxer drool...don't worry, that was OK...such a sweet dog!!!!

Just something that was was encouraged in the breeds back whenever they started being formed into what they are a long time ago.. A look that was bred for. I don't know the particulars, I'm no breeder.

But I do know enough to know that the whole kept in a cage that's too small thing is a load of hooey lol

nah...that's totally false.

Even if you confine a dog to a small cage, and thus his nose would not be able to develop, the dog's genetics don't change. Therefore, the offspring of the dog would have notmal noses.

Genetic features like short noses come from selective evolution...man took wolf and customized them by breeding dogs with qualities they liked.

It was always my understanding that the brachycephalic breeds had been bred that way over many, many years to help them preform the jobs they have or once had.

For instance with my breed of choice ( bulldog ) its been said that the nose was shortened to help the dog in its breathing while holding onto the bull when bullbaiting, the nose rope and wrinkles of the face where said to channel blood away from the nose and eyes so the dog could continue the fight.

so I guess they just found two dogs that had relatively short noses, maybe got a short nosed puppy and bred him/her with a short nosed puppy, then took that shortest nosed puppy out of that litter........

Gaddy: Here's my Kaida by the way (I love this dog!)

Aww, thanks!

When she was at the vet's office (about 2 weeks ago or so) she had just gone over 50lbs. (from what I remember it was appx. 51.3 (?).)
