New Guinea Singing Dog
Does anyone own or know anyone who owns or breeds this dog for human companionship?
Or are they considered "wild"? I could swear that I saw someone online somewhere who owned one, but I can't remember! Anyone with ANY info on these dogs, having been introduced to them or not, please post! I have more information I'd like to share with someone who is knowledgable of them, but until I know that someone even knows what I'm talking about I'll just generally ask here. Thanks! |

I used to know a little about them, but it's been a while. From what I *remember*...heh heh, I think ... they're not the easiest dogs in the world to keep, but individuals differ greatly. After all, I am pretty sure I remember someone on GP that had one too, and it sounds like they were not having much trouble at all, and that he/she? was an excellent companion.
Anyway, if memory serves, they are pretty good escape artists and need to have a tall fenced yard, preferably with the edges that "scoop" in, if you get what I mean, so that the dog can't scale it. To be honest, I really can't remember much else - I'll see if I can find the webpages I used to look at. |

New Guinea Singing Dog Club of America
5265 Old Stage Road Central Point, OR 97502 USA - You might be able to write to them for information - on the last link there's also the phone number and email for the club. Hope this helps - I think they're a fascinating breed. http://www.canineworld.com/NGSDCS/ http://www.thebreedsofdogs.com/NEW_G...INGING_DOG.htm http://www.rarebreed.com/breeds/ngsd/ngsd.html The FAQ on the first link should be *really* useful for you, as well as the owner testimonials. They've got some really interesting info in there. |

THANK YOU!
I was hoping someone would post a club here, now for the story. I knew that some people own them, but I was at a petting zoo this weekend and they had two there! In a petting Zoo! They were two females and were seperated by a chain link fence from one another. I understand that these might be considered "wild" , but to seperate a pack animal from others of it's breed? It's a DOG for crying out loud... They looked so dismal and filthy, and didn't even have HALF the enclosure that the sheep and pigs had. They had no shelters and only ripped up domesticated dog toys. Is this right? |

That's pretty weak of them, in my opinion. These dogs *can* be kept as pets by the right people (and it's a tall order to be the right people), but even if this was not the case, any establishment calling itself a zoo should be providing these animals with excellent shelter, food, water, and enrichment objects - which clearly the petting zoo you're describing is not providing. I would expect better for ANY animal.
Hopefully one of the rescues or clubs can help these poor girls out. |

I mailed the New Guinea Singing Dog Club but that email must be so old, the email came back to me...
Time to start over I guess. |

Awww what a pity!
I suppose you could write to the breed club, but that might take longer than you really want for the girls to have to wait. What about any of the NGSD breed rescues? |

I got a hold of someone, I had to hunt, but it was from one of those links you gave me, so thanks to your research they are going to contact the zoo to see what they can do.
I learned from the woman who contacted me that members of the same sex must be seperated during breeding season (which is just now getting over) because they have extreme aggression toward each other. They also don't travel in packs because of the place that they come from. New Guinea has only sparse prey so there is no need for an entire pack to hunt one small squirrel. She said that these dogs have never even been studied in the wild as of yet. How much we have to learn about these awesome little creatures! Thank you so much for your help! This has been a good deed for this breed. Let's just hope that something actually comes of it, and it wasn't all flash and bang, eh? ![]() |

I'm glad I could be of service! I really do hope that these girls get an improved living situation.
I really love this breed - was interested in them for a long time, but had stopped looking into them just due to the regular college issues - papers to write, races to run, etc etc. Now you've gone and got me hooked again! They remind me a bit of my own breed. |
