Thumbs down Just on my local news...microchips

It was just reported on my local news that our Humane Society has NOT been scanning found dogs for micro chips. I am so mad just thinking about how many dogs might have been put down or adopted that were chipped...
Their excuse was that there was not a universal scanner available yet??
But there is one available for the 2 most used brands of chips!
Anyway they say now they will begin to scan starting in December...
Thank god.

Sounds more like they didn't want to bother spending the money, if I'm not mistaken the two leading scanners will read and even if its another type of chip it will at least tell you that there is one.

a warning about Micro chips! (in case some of you dont know)...
THEY MIGRATE!!!
I had Kaida's installed the same time that she was spayed and this was about 8 months ago and 3 months ago I was petting her chest (she likes you to scratch her chest hard while she's sitting in front of you), anyhow... I feel this lump!
My heart sinks and the first thing that came to mind was "Lump=cancer?"
So I'm messing with this lump, it doesnt seem to bother her any and I realize that it feels like a peice of rice. As soon as I said "peice of rice" to myself I immediately realized what the lump was (that's how they describe the chip to you).
I took her to get "scanned" to see if thats what it was and sure enough...!

anyhow, AVID covered the cost to have another one put in her and they also covered the cost for the registration of the second chip (both are still registered), but I will be having my vet check her EVERY time that we go for a visit!!!

I was really p*ssed about that!!!

so be careful with those little things and have your vet/shelter/whatever check them often to make sure that they're in place!

Interesting. All my pugs have been microchipped, I have them checked annually, none have migrated. I always have them checked though, to make sure they are working, and in the right spot.

The thing is about cost is that usually Humane Society gets them donated via vets and even the companies that make the chips..

Oh yes, one of my girls had hers migrate down into her lower left leg. I've yet to have it happen with my pups but have had it happen with older dogs and rescues.

Our local shelter has done a wonderful job though in scanning and they've all been trained to scan the entire dog for a chip just to be sure. I still can't imagine a shelter not scanning for chips, the thought of how many may have been reunited with their families instead of put down just sickens me.

That's stupid....you're right, there could've been a bunch of chipped animals that either ended up with a different family or were euthanized because the jerks didn't bother to scan!

WOW, I never knew that could happen, BXR...yikes. My girls aren't chipped yet though.

Wow! I didn't know they migrated So what happens after they migrate? Your dog just walks around with two chips in him/her?

Oh well, I'm probably going to convert myself into a Greyhound/Peke only person LOL, so all the greys will have tats.
