True. Just a few days ago, somebody asked about Iggies. She had her eye on an Iggy at the petstore whose price had been marked down. Well, she couldn't resist those big brown eyes and she felt sorry for it so DUH she forked out the money even when she *knew* what she was getting herself into. I even PMed her telling her that NO, she should ditch that pet store and find a reputable breeder. I gave her all the specifics and I even handed her this link: http://www.italian-greyhound.net/petshopmom.htm
I mean how specific do you want me to be?! Do you want me to take a puppy mill and fly it over to your house so you can see what happens? Actually what pissed me off was that she was still considering whether or not she should get the Iggy, her daughter and husband sneaked off and came back with a petstore Iggy. At least there aren't many petstores who sell puppies around here. I, for one, will never buy anything from a petstore who sells kittens or puppies. Pet Food Express for me!

Well, I’m sure you tried anything you could to stop them. It is those types of people that are a problem and (must) should be stop (as well as the stores who sell them-that’s a whole other discussion). Even if you flue the puppy mill to their houses they still wouldn’t get it. Sick, Sick, Sick….makes me want to throw-up .
Here are some web video links to send her, just keep reminding her what she has contributed too!!!!

I haven't checked out the links, yet, but Thank you. I've saved them onto my computer. Unfortunately, that lady has not responded to me and probably has ignored me... Another Iggy litter is underway...

Here are some particularly aggravating arrival stories from Dogster:

"I was driving in Kansas when I saw a sign, 'Pekingese puppies for sale.' I bought three of them. I fell in love with the breed on the ride home."

(Three? THREE???? What kind of breeder would sell THREE puppies to somebody at once? An irresponsible breeder, that's who. And who can handle three puppies? One puppy is hard enough!)

"I bought Honey and two of her littermates to breed her to."

(Again, that's THREE PUPPIES!! Is three some new, unlucky number? And breeding littermates?? OMG that's not a good idea! Wouldn't the breeder have stepped up and said something? Oh yeah, I forgot, he/she's an irresponsible breeder and doesn't care if a new owner inbreeds their pet-quality puppies, they just care about a fat wallet.)

*sigh* How can people be so stupid?

The problem is that Shibas make striking, gorgeous puppies no matter what the pedigree is behind them (it is sadly a different story when they grow up...you can pretty much tell a Shiba of good breeding by just looking at it...even my oversized boy posesses the strength of features, masculinity, and soboku required of the breed). They also have that whole "oh - it's so exotic and different" factor playing against them.

The local he11hole - sorry - petstore has just begun carrying Shibas. I took a look at them, though I knew it would only infuriate me. Way too young to be separated from the dam, first of all, and poor-coated, snipy muzzled, lacking in cheek padding, light eyes, sorry tails...you name it.

Even more disgusting is Wizard of Claws, which offers toy and teacup white Shibas. Excuse me? These *aren't* Shibas then. White is an unacceptable color (as mandated by Nippo, JKC, AKC, FCI, UKC), and TOY AND TEACUP? Just think a little people, c'mon! What chance in he11 would a toy or teacup sized Shiba have against a wild boar? Does that make any sense at all? And how is the standard size not small enough? Males are 14.5-16, females 13.5-15.5. How is that too big? These dogs make fine apartment dogs, if given proper exercise and stimulation. But again...this is all about fads and cuteness, not about maintaining the strength, beauty, and integrity of the breed...or even what MAKES the Shiba a Shiba at all.

Greenleaf, I agree with the others. Go and get your show Peke or Tibbie. If people do see your striking dog and hope to get a similar one, chances are they're going to ask you about him/her. That's when you can explain that dogs such as this do not come from petstores. I've had this experience with my two - people always stop me to ask about Kimi and Tai...and the proselytization begins...
I saw two Shiba pups in a pet shop near me....I was upset....and even more upset when I saw four Goldens stuffed into one cage fit for two Chi puppies.

i hate that my dog was from a BYB (btw i didnt know it at the time i bought him, its a long story) he has turned out to be a GREAT! puppy! i asked the people who sold me the dog why they were selling him they replied "we fell in love with both of them, but kno he got bigger so we have to sell him" ( they bought Brody and his Sister 300$ each) when we brought Brody home i gave the lady a call and asked for the breeder number, and a little info on where the dogs were kept.I was furious to find out the were kept on the smally back porch wit POOP ALL OVER THE FLOOR! i am sure alot of you already have read this in another forum but i thought that this may somehow tie in.... but yes i hate puppy mills, pet stores that sell dogs, and BYBs...... they are horrible people who care NOTHING about the dog.......

ughhh...I just noticed this topic. I'm not even going to get STARTED on the petstore/puppymill thing because I'll ruin my thanksgiving

Greenleaf, I absolutely empathize with you. My aunt and uncle used to raise and show Pekes (spent 30 yrs of their lives dedicated to the breed). I had the priviledge to grow up with 2 wonderful (and well bred) Pekingese (along with my beloved Boxers). It is sick what all the irresponsible breeding has done to this breed. I don't think I have seen a properly conformed Peke in years!

Don't give up on the breed you love...

I'll try to find some pics of 'Chang' (Pyepekes Anking) and 'Mitzi' (Pyepekes Mitzi-Muru), my mom's 2 pekingese, to post later

Yep....Petstores and PuppyMills......ugh. I hate going into the petstore now and seeing all of those dogs that are in way to small of cages. And they are all mostly dogs that need LOTS of exercise and an experinced owner! Yesh......People buy a dog because it is cute and then it grows and they just dump it....stupid people...

Yep, there's a perfect example of that in Dog Stories that I posted. It's about a Golden Retriever.

Ya know, I was thinking about that....Guess what? A neighbor around here bought TWO Jack Russel Terrier pups. They're barely 8 weeks, too. Can you imagine the uproar those two are going to cause? I can't believe what kind of person would sell two JRTs of all breeds

By the way, Miss "fell in love with breed on the way back home", it takes a true fancier to truly love the breed. IMO, a true fancier does not support bybs or puppy millers because those are the people who take the breed back two steps.

Smooshie, I'd love to see pics of your Pekes. Honestly, I've RARELY met a well bred Peke. The ones I've seen are too gregarious, dainty, delicate, and some look more like Lucky than a Peke!

I can see having two pups if you want them to exercise each other and keep each other company. But even 3 is TOO MANY at once. I can also see going through heck trying to raise two pups (and yes, JRTs indeed!) at once! I don't ever want to have a puppy again, period, and these people are raising more than one at once?!?! Crazy, is what I say. *shakes head*

I have to admit, I have placed two pups with one family from the same litter BUT, they were experienced previous bulldog owners, only breed they had ever been owned by in well over 20 years and they had always had two. Their last two died within two weeks of one another at 12 years of age. Both were retired and had plenty of time for both pups.

They however were the exception to the rule, it was and still is to this day the only time I've allowed two pups to go to the same home. One pup is handful enough no matter what breed! lol

I wouldn't place two puppies in the same home unless the home was experienced with the breed, and had a reason for wanting two dogs at once. I'd have to know them pretty well before I would ever do that, especially with a high-energy, 'difficult' breed like the Border Collie.

lol I don't miss the puppy stage, that is for sure! I'm watching one of our freind's five month old Golden Retriever puppy and MAN! It never stops playing and it mouths and jumps and it is just crazy! (We took it into PetsMart the other day. It had a blast! And I discovered two things:
1. It is really weird having a dog that doesn't try to eat other dogs (like Blackie does). I'm used to being on my toes everytime another dog comes around and when we went in to PetsMart, she wanted to go say Hi to all of the dogs! (It sure was nice though....)
2. The reason PetsMart has slick floors is so your dog can't run! lol Every time Mattie (the puppy) would try to run, she would slip and fall down! lol

I think if I ever get another dog, it won't be a puppy. Just a young adult. (Unless of course, I change my mind and would like a little bit of craziness. THEN I will get a puppy! )
