I'm sitting browsing through Dogster under the heading : Pekingese. As I browse through this, I feel like the good of the breed is slipping through my fingers. Their Arrival stories are so depressing (to me). About 4 out of 10 Pekingeses came from Pet Stores. One even had the tenacity to write this:
Quote:
![]() I just want to cry. My breed is falling into the pits and these ignorant people are now telling me to quit growling?! A pet store who sells puppies is a pet store who sells puppies. There is only one thing that goes on in their minds--Puppies (no matter how sick or alive)=$$$. The worst part is that only one or two of them actually acknowledges that they regret going to a pet store and that MAYBE their dogs came from irresponsible breeders. I can't even begin to tell you how wrong it is to ask for a white Peke of all colors from a pet store. To my knowledge, there is only one kennel in Oregon that breeds white Pekes and is a member of the PCA. Not to mention, a whole lot of these Peke owners want to breed them... I don't know whether or not I should continue my love affair with this breed. I was hoping, maybe, to acquire a show prospect and use him/her in handling classes. It was a longtime goal that I hoped to accomplish in the next decade or so...Now, I fear that I will only encourage more irresponsible breeding and impulse buys because "the dog on the street is so cute". For crying out loud, there's a parti-color Pekingese now!!!! Everything seems so hopeless... |

That's sad, GG. He doesn't even look like a Peke....
.I feel really bad for you. Whenever I see one of my breeds for sale in a store or in the paper I get so upset--they are wrecking them. I worry about people thinking the dogs I'm walking are cute so then they want one....of course, two are mixes and one purebred. I think you should continue loving and being enthusiastic about the Pekingese, but spread the word on bad breeders, who really just want to make big bucks off of the great dogs. |

I feel your pain. There is a pet store in the mall (yes, THE MALL!!) that sells these sickly looking, poorly bred dogs. I feel so sorry for those dogs, they sit on metal bars in tiny cages all day long, and drink out of water bottles.
Then there is a store not too far from this mall called Just Puppies. Dogster can really anger me at times. I've searched through the Dobermans before and it surprises me how many are listed as purebreds. It wouldn't be so bad if they would listen, but they shut you out when you try and educate. I remember seeing a Kimbertal dog in an ad listing him as up for stud. He looked horrible, and they had listed him as having good temperament and "championship" bloodlines. It just makes you feel helpless at times. ![]() |

Oh do I ever feel your pain. I own one of the most popular "pet store breeds". I browsed papillons on dogster and I saw about 70% of them that had conformation like Ripley and some even a lot worse. (At least my bug-eyed, roach-backed, straight-hocked, short-muzzled -Can you tell I pickat him a lot?- boy is still recognizable as a Papillon. Some of the dogs on there weren't.) I saw several "teacups" that came from WOC, and to top it all off, the owners of those dogs are BREEDING them. ![]() |

I've never really liked the small breeds, (I like them, just probably wouldn't want to own one (unless it is a Dachshund! lol) they are just to fragile for me,) but right now I'm glad they aren't my favorite dogs because so many people are overbreeding them.
The only thing wrong with the breeds I like are people think they are evil (like the Chows and Pitties) or people are breeding them to big or mean. (Like Boxers, Pitties, Alasken Malamutes, etc.) So I don't have to deal with seeing people breeding my breed for a 'teacup'. Just 'King' sized! I think you should continue loving the breed, but keep on spreading the word about BYB and PupM. I'm gald Petsmart doesn't sell puppies. If they did, I would be SUPER mad. There is a pet store in the mall that sells puppies and every other thing imaginable. Their birds are in to small of cages (they had 4 cockateils in a cage to small for 2 parakeets!), the ferrets and rabbits are 'heaped' in the cages, and the puppies are everything that a petstore puppy is. My mom went by there and said that they had 4 Lab puppies in their 'bigger' cages and the pups were about the size of Rose. (Which is a little bit smaller than a Standerd Schnauzer.) Ohhhh they tick me off......grrrrrr.......... ![]() |

Boy, I'm glad I have people who can relate to my situation. What really made me angry and near to tears was that MY Peke (who looks half Tibbie) has a more Pekingese face than any of those "purebreds" who were so proudly bought at petstores. My background on my computer is Lucky and I kept flipping from looking at the Dogster Pekes and my dog, and the differences are appalling. Rip's-Lucky, too, is a far cry from what Pekes should be. Yet, he looks more like one than any Dogster Peke. I'm sure you all know what a good Peke looks like (if you don't, think back and remember Les from the dog show). The Peke from the first picture is just an embarrassment. It's everything that a Peke SHOULDN'T be and it's almost mocking the hard work that is put into the breed.

Greenleaf that isn't very fair to imply that people SHOULDN'T be proud of their backyard bred dogs. I am proud of my BYB boy. I am not proud of his breeding, but I am proud of him. He is a cute, fun dog regardless of his breeding. I would be just as proud of him if he was a show champion.
Now, if you meant that people are proud that they bought from a pet store or byb, I agree with you, but if you mean that people should not take pride in their dogs because they came from a bad breeder, then I have to strongly disagree with you. (By the way, I saw the worst thing ever on dogster.. A Bordoodle. Just guess what that is. *shakes head in disgust*) |
