why did you choose the breed you did?
I chose the rottweiler after years of owning a rottweiler mix. Doing all the research, and having friends that owned this stoic breed.
They are extremely loyal, easily trained ( due to food and eagerness to please) calm cool and collected when needed, and big goofballs when not. They are good with kids trained well, and supervised due to the stregnth. All around the best breed for me, always keeping me on my toes. Will never own another breed. How about you guys, what made you chose your breed |

Well I haven't really chose a breed. Although I have 4 dogs only one is a purebred. All of mine are rescues and were chose by their personalities not looks.

After many years of having large dogs I just decided it's much easier having the little dogs to travel with and take care of at my age now. I was on two Yorkie rescue groups for years and fostered many of these guys. It wasn't till I stopped rescue that I decided to adopt a Yorkie. Then I felt she needed a friend like herself.

I chose Rotties because I researched them. They have everything I could ask for in a dog, and I love em soooo much. They truly make you appreciate and love them. They are also a breed that I can give what they need. They aren't the only breed with the qualities I adore, and one day I may own one or more of those too, but as long as I live, there will always be a Rottie in my home!

When I graduated from college and got my first 'real job' and own apartment I started researching breeds. I wanted a large, short-haired, medium energy level, fairly independent, intelligent, loyal breed. Well, that's pretty much a greyhound. I also didn't want a puppy.
I went to visit a rescue group and one look into those soulful eyes and I was hooked. We will have other sighthound breeds in our family, but we will also always have a few retired racers as well. |

Always room for one more
|
I saw a picture of a Yorkie in a library book when I was about 7 years old. It had a show coat, and I knew I just had to have one. I had all kinds of little-girl fantasies about what it would be like having my own little dog, did everything wrong, and finally got a Yorkie at 12 years of age. The breed wasn't a very good match, though I think it would've been a lot better had I known what I was doing and trained my baby. I have a soft spot in my heart for Yorkies now, but in the back of my head I always know they probably aren't my ideal breed. We did "foster" (long story) one for a little while, and his temperament and characteristics were more suited to me, so I think I'd have to be exposed to better representations of the breed to know for sure either way.
I'm currently waiting to experience a story like KennelMom's when I get my first Greyhound soon. ![]() |

I didn't really choose my breed either. My boy's a rescue and he chose me, I had no intention of ever having a Chihuahua but he decided I was who he wanted to be with and I just fell madly in love. He's such a sweet boy.
One day I'll be able to have a breed I've actually chosen....one day. **dreams about her drooly giants**Cass. |

I chose my Samoyed not because he was a Samoyed, but cuz he had such an amazing personality. However, my fathers previous history with Samoyeds made the decision a little easier.
My Bulldog. My husband always thought they were great dogs. Then he began working for Mack Trucks... So when we decided to buy a house with a little bit of land I decided to research the breed and see if it would be a good fit. I spent hours on line and talking to CrossfireBulldogs to make sure this was what we wanted. Between the temperment and attitude we knew it would be a good fit. We had planned on rescuing our first bully, but fate had other plans. |

It took me quite a long time to finally go with my Shadow. I did look at the Humane Society and there were so many dogs that would have fit the bill had I had a large yard or on an acreage , so much to my dismay I could justify getting a large dog.
I guess it was the fact that this little pup was so happy and independent....still remember him walking around with a stuffed cat toy LOL, just too cute for words. I have never regretted it, he has brought so much joy to my life that I could never repay his love and loyalty. |

I spent the first 12 years of my life trying to, since the moment I knew what one was, convince my parents to get me a dog. Over and over I heard the refrain "our lifestyle just isn't right for a dog." One day, after the same back and forth arguments, my dad said instead that if my sister and I could find a breed that fit our lifestyle, we could get a dog. I'm pretty sure he didn't think one existed.
Two years of heavy researching produced the Shiba Inu, whose attitude, personality, and particular characteristics matched everything we needed: *Independent. *Not a huge breed. *Quiet. *Moderate grooming *Able to adapt to children and cats if raised with them. *Able to live comfortably without a *huge* yard. *Clean. To make things even better, when I saw my first Shiba, I was instantly captivated. I would have been fine with a dog that looked like ANYTHING - but the Shiba LOOKED like a big dog, and gave the impression of being a big dog, even when it really wasn't, which was exactly what I wanted. (Others agree - to this day when I show people photos of Kimi or Tai, they are always surprised when I tell them how they really aren't that big -from the pictures most people assume they are huge). I got my first Shiba at fourteen years of age, and haven't looked back since. |

Eyes = Mirror to the soul

My dad was the one in our family who always wanted a husky. My grandma always told us about how ever since he was little, he wanted one, and begged. My grandma (my dads mom) isn't one to like big dogs too much, unless they were trained to a 'T'... she likes her little yappers. ANYWAYS.. Not too long after my Golden/ChowChow was PTS we thought it would be nice to have a buddy for Sarge to play with (Boxer/GSD). My mom came across an ad in the paper for a Siberian Husky puppy for 'free'. My mom immediately called my dad, and strangely enough my dad insisted she call them. So, we called, were screened and they felt Sheiba would be perfect for our home.
Ever since she came home with us, we were hooked. They are such a different breed. They can learn quickly if you catch their attention well enough, stubborn, beautiful, goofy dogs. They're friendly with just about everyone, and their personalities can range greatly amongst every individual dog. They're loyal to their family and love to be with them. They generally are great with other big dogs too, and small dogs or cats if you raise and train them correctly. My family, nor I, will ever be without atleast two huskies in our home. I just cannot describe how wonderful they are, as long as you research. My future breed will be a boxer. I had a boxer/GSD that was a wonderful dog. After being around other boxers too, I love their goofy personality. They are like giant puppies, and also do a very good job at telling when their owner is feeling tense or uneased in a situation. I've also enjoyed owning a rottweiler, and have to say I love their personality too. I completely agree with those of you who have said they are calm and collected, but can also be the biggest goof balls when they're feeling silly. Also always alert, but never over doing their job to protect their home. I see them like teddy bears. They're complete love bugs... and DEFINETLY food motivated LOL Pitbulls are another breed I love, and the ones I had given a home too (even if it was for a short while) was because of their extremely friendly personality and wanting to say hello to everyone. I got Kelso (GSD/Rottie or Chow) because he just seemed like a very sweet puppy. He wasn't crazy and wanting to tear up your fingers like most other puppies. He has been one of the most different dogs I've had. He has been different as far as training goes, and the way he learns. But he was great as a puppy. The only problem he had was chewing on shoes, but a few days of swap for a toy, and he quit. Such a good boy. In the end, any dog that has a great personality is why I have a special place for them in my heart. It's usually that "click" that you feel inside when you know that dog is right for you, no matter the breed. |
