what would you do for your pet?
When is enough, enough.
4 years ago I had to make that dreadful decsion. I rescued a rottweiler lab from a no kill shelter. he was there for 3 1/2 years. Before that he was found on the side of the road to die. We did behaviourist, training, he almost died from ecoli, Nothing could take away his fear aggression. Finally I had to make the decsion to PTS due to him almost attacking my neighbors kid. I knew after 3 years of all the training and stuff he was getting worse. he was 8 yrs old. I took out loans, credit cards, to try and help this boy, he was my soulmate as a dog. What would you do? when do you say enough is enough, or can you? |

That is exactly why I hate no kill shelters. I'm sure I would do alot for my dogs but I havent been through much with them yet. I have spent 700 dollars for emergency vet visits to stitch pups up on holidays and sundays.

I would mortgage my home for my dogs..........I'd do everything you did. If it was not possible to cure the aggression, then it would just live out it's life in the house with us.

They wanted to do exploritory surgery to find out what was wrong, but also told us it was likely a ruptured tumor and unoperateable. and they wanted to give her morphine for the pain. We opted not to have the exploritory surgery that day, and We knew the morphine could likely kill her, but we felt so bad that she hurt so bad, and approved it anyway. They gave her the shot to make her comfortable, and within hours she died. We were devistated, but take comfort knowing that at least she wasn't in pain. Now we know that she would never have woken up from the exploritory surgery either. The bill for her was thousands of dollars, and over her life she cost us over ten thousand dollars in vet bills, due to her thyroid issues. I'd do the same with our current dogs. However, I draw the line at aggression. I would put a biting dog to sleep. It would be hard, but I would not own a biting dog. Agression is not somethign to mess around with. If one of my dogs was truly agressive and I did all the things you did, and it still attacked someone and was getting worse, I would do the same thing you did, put the poor thing out of it's misery. Hope I never have to make that decision though. |

I have put a dog down for agression around other dogs she killed 2 of my moms cats out of 2!!! and we have paid so many vet bills from her attacking other animals that we decided it was enough it was a RESCUE and a Great Dane. She was 7 when we put her down so she was indeed getting there and it was so sad.

I would do absolutely anything for my pets, and any sacrifice I could make. But also to do the right thing, even if it meant having him/her PTS. But....you can bet your arse, that I would explore any other solution first, if medical, tests would be carried out to see if it couldn't be sorted.
If it was a behavior problem, I'd work hard, but couldn't give an ultimate outcome. I'd love to say I'd keep the dog no matter what, but if the behavior was problem where the dog could never leave the house, I'd have to think, is this really a good life for the dog? Being unable to walk him/her, and have fun outside and away from the home, I'm not sure would be the best thing. However, if this was a senior, who wasn't much up for going out, that's a different story. |

I have to agree with everyone else, I would do whatever it took to get the best treatment for my boy. He has cost me many thousands of dollars so far but no money could come close to the joy I feel when he licks my nose or is just bouncing with joy at the sight of a new bully stick.
You just can't put a price on that! |

I would have sold my house had I been able to save anyone of my beautiful pets, The only time I feel enough is enough is when the animal has no quality of life,
The most precious things ever to come into my life besides my immediate family are my animals. If I had a dog that wasnt able to socialise then I would just stay home with him and let him live his life in peace. I actually prefer not to socialise much anyway.. and have often wished I could bite some moron who has come visiting lol |

I'm with you, Bandit. Aggression puts other creatures at risk. If training and meds are not effective, the dog would be PTS. My concern about trying to keep the dog inside is the chance of the dog getting out or someone or something getting in and harmed.

I would do anything at all for my dogs, it wouldn't matter to me if I had to put a second mortgage on my home, whatever needed to be done I would do.
That being said though, there is a limit to how far I will go, that limit depends on the dog.....the quality of their life is very important to me and comes before my own feelings. If the quality of life isn't there as it should be and I've done everything possible to try and keep it there without success then I won't go further no matter what the issue. |

I'd do anything for my dogs.
Specifically during a hurricane. I would never go to a shelter (human) that did not allow pets. They tell you to leave them at home and write your phone number on the inside of their leg or ear with a permanent marker. YEAH RIGHT - I'd right it out in my car or home before I did that. They are my world - I'd never even think of doing that. |

I turned down $8,000 in scholarships to keep my basenji. I went to a community college rather than a university to have Saboo stay with me.
I lived in a horrendous neighborhood to be able to keep her in my apartment. I turned down a $60K/year job to be able to keep her and actually see her. I haven't run into medical issues or behavioral issues with any of my dogs so far, and I'm incredibly lucky. That said, I've certainly made my fair share of sacrifices for them. If something should occur, I would do anything in my power to do what's right for them. |
