LOL Cass I still read your posts....

The colored reflection from the eyes of dogs comes from a layer of tissue at the back of the eye (the choroid) that contains blood vessels, brown pigment cells, and, in most dogs, a shiny cell layer (the tapetum) covering mostly the upper half. This tapetum probably improves animals’ vision at night. It may be yellow, green, blue, orange, or variations in between those colors. So the tapetum is the usual source of a dog’s eye reflection. Some dogs, though, have very small tapeta or none at all and they show a very dull reflection or none at all. In other dogs, especially dogs with certain hair coat colors (liver, orange-brown) or with blue eyes (irises), very little pigment is present in the back of the eye and the blood vessels that are normally hidden by this pigment are visible and make the reflection bright red.

The color of this tapetal layer varies to some extent with an animal's coat color. A black Labrador retriever, for example, will usually have a green tapetal reflection. A buff Cocker spaniel will generally show a yellow tapetal reflection. Most young puppies and kittens have a blue tapetal reflection until the structures in the back of the eye fully mature at six to eight months of age. "Color dilute" dogs and cats, such as red Siberian huskies and blue point Siamese cats, may have no tapetal pigment, and may therefore exhibit a red reflex just like human beings.

That's a very interesting answer..............does this mean that both sides of the tapetal can be different even though the eyes are both brown?

This is Manson, she was actually hit by a car a few months ago. I really miss her. Her eyes were naturally one blue and one green..but when i took pictures, they would be green and yellow, and then blue and red:

She had the most stunning eyes!

Yes you do. We all should know by now. It's the light reflected in them that gives the 'glowing' effect. Like reflectors on a car or a bike.

Yes, the glow is a reflected thing, but what causes all the different colors of glow, especially if their eyes are brown, and also if they are brown and each eye reflects a different color........like BB's dogs.

What would cause a difference in color in each eye of the same dog?

Depends on the shade of the tapetum. It said they can come in any shade, or variation.

Yes the tapetum isn't always the same colour in both eyes.

The different colors come from size of the pupils and the amount of light allowed into the eye to reflect. Pupils that are wide open show green, less open show red. Humans show red since we don't have a tapetum to reflect the light that enters our eyes. Blind dog's often show green since their pupils are always wide open. The angle of light also effects the color.

BB, lets hope there is no Jekel and Hyde in your babies , but am really fasinated in why your babies have a different color in each eye! I bet even the medical books don't even elaborate on those colors, but my curiosity is really getting the best of me, so I see I need to be on a quest to solve this.
PRA is a concern with ACD's and I heard somewhere that if your ACD's eyes shine red have his eyes examined, but I think I've got it backwards. I found this on a Cattledog Website: "A common rumor states that if your dog's eyes glow green in bright light then he has PRA", which is false.
