A True Christmas Angel For Hannah

As I do every year around this time, I start making phone calls to the "new parents" of dogs that I have placed over the years to wish them a wonderful Christmas and to make sure that all is going well.

Today, I made my call to the wonderful family that has my girl Angel and had one of the greatest conversations with Angel's new mom as well as some pretty amazing news! To fill you in a little bit; Angel was the result of my very first planned Bulldog breeding, she was the only pup born and I was as I still am VERY attached to her but as the years went on Angel became pretty unhappy here and it was obvious that while she loved us very much she was miserable not being her mommy's only baby.

I placed Angel knowing in my heart that she would be much better off if she was getting the attention she felt she deserved and could be the one and only love of someone's life. It broke my heart when I placed her and I still think of her every day but my baby love is MUCH happier now with a wonderful family, she's the only dog and the apple of their eye.

Angel's new family consists of a husband and wife along with their three children, ages 11, 8 and little Hannah who just turned 5. Angel has become very attached to every member of the family but has bonded most with little Hannah to the point of playing "dress up" with her, playing tea party and even sleeps in Hannah's bed with her.

During my conversation with the family today I found out that Hannah has begun to have seizures and that she's going through multiple tests currently to find out why. The thing that amazed the family is that Angel alerted them to the first seizure as well as every one since! She not only alerts them but does so about 24 hours in advance as well as again about 10 minutes before hand!

My girl has never been trained for this but seems to be able to sense when it's going to take place, she doesn't leave Hannah's side from the time of the first alert until after the seizure has occured. I can't tell you how VERY proud I am of Angel!!!!! I've been grinning from ear to ear ever since I heard the news and although it still breaks my heart not to have her here with me, I know now that someone else needs our special Angel by their side more than we do! Merry Christmas!

Oh Sonja, what a wonderful story! It always astounds me just how astute and connected our furfriends can be - not to mention how helpful as well. Angel truly is one for Hannah - what a special bond it is that has formed between the 2 of them. I am sure you are so very, very proud of your sweet Angel. Angel, in her own way, let you know that a very special little girl needed her to be her very own FurAngel!

Thank you for sharing this very heartwarming story with us!

She plans on calling me back with updates on Hannah as well as sending Christmas pictures of the kids and Angel soon.

I'll be sure to post the pictures when I get them, I'm still grinning from ear to ear and just can't even put into words how very proud I am of my baby love!

Oooh! That's wonderful! So great to hear that! Dogs are so amazing, and wonderful guardian angels for the ones who need them. Her name explains it all huh?

Sorry to hear about Hannah though Hope everything will be okay!

I was reading a small magazine on epilepsy and they had done a study and said that many dogs can sense a child's seizures coming on. If I remember correctly a Samoyed sits on top of his 3-year-old pal whenever she is having a seizure to protect her (it is very dangerous to get up--you could be seriously injured just by bumping into something). I actually have epilepsy (haven't had a seizure in months....YAY!) and sometimes Tippy (who sleeps next to my bed) becomes restless about 20 minutes before I have a seizure.

I'm still just in awe and sooooo proud of her I could just burst! From the day she first opened her eyes I knew that Angel was something special, there was always such a fire and look of true understanding there unlike any I've ever seen in a dog but I never imagined just how very special she would turn out to be.

Even though I miss her dearly and have thought about her every day since she left I've never had one day of regret, she's happy, very loved and now I know very needed. Angel will always have a special place in my heart and soul but I know she's where she belongs.

Gaddy, that is really interesting and since the news I've been reading up more on the subject. Does Tippy try to get closer to you or give any other signs?

Not since I fell on her, no . While I was having a seizure I fell off my bed onto Tippy. She wiggled out, LOL. Now she goes to the other side of the room sometimes if a seizure is coming. Other common signs for her are pacing, lapping up a bunch of water, panting, and sometimes trying to wake me up. Like Hannah I am very lucky to have a loving family and dog. We've gone to a great guy down in TX who does natural stuff and it really helps.....and we don't eat basically any junky food (mainly we eat salad and fruits), milk, or sugar (though we do like the occasional chocolate bar--couldn't live without that!!). Russell Blaylock (sp?) wrote some stuff on epilepsy and natural things.....I will have to get my mom on here she knows a ton about that all. I hope Hannah feels better soon and they figure out what it is.

Poor Tippy LOL Do you find yourself paying closer attention to Tippy to try and determine when your next seizure is coming and how did you figure out that she was actually trying to let you know that something was going to happen?

I really hope they do find an answer for Hannah or at least get her seizures under some control. I'm sure it would be a very frightening thing for a small child to go through since they can't really understand what it is going on yet.

We do pay a lot of attention to signs. Sometimes if she gives a sign I'll be like, "Ah DARN!" But sometimes what I think is a sign is actually just a Tippy-dog that wants to get outta the room or something, and I don't have a seizure.

Seizures can be very scary. For me, it feels as if I can't breathe. I want to sit up, afterwards my speech is messed up for about 20 minutes. Sometimes my arms and/or legs will be a little limp and we'll have to wait until my brain fixing everything and I can move and talk. Getting to bed early, taking my medication on-time and having no caffeine, MSG, or aspartame helps.

Well, I got my Christmas pictures of Angel today in the mail with a lovely card and although I was REALLY happy to get them, I cried for almost an hour and I can't even explain all the different thoughts that were going through my mind.

I miss my girl so much, she and I were soul mates and even though I know she's happier were she is and that she and Hannah have become a wonderful pair I still wish I had her here with me. I know that's so very selfish but lord did it hurt to see her picture. At the same time it was wonderful to be able to see her, it was like having positive proof that she was ok and that I could rest easy. Sorry to babble, just a really difficult day for me I guess.
