Help- travel (w/ dog) questions- and I'm back :)

First off, sorry I haven't been around. My computer went down 2 weeks ago, so I took a week's break from the internet, and now am sharing a computer with the rest of the family. My computer is back now, but not plugged in, as the Christmas tree currently resides in it's corner! Just glad I came back in time to catch Barrett's good news! Hope you and your's are all doing well, too. Let me know if I missed anything else of importance!

Anyway... Right after Christmas my family plans to leave for a week-long vacation at the beach. We use a friend's beach house, and it's 5 hours away. I've never taken Missie before (have always wanted to- she'd LOVE the beach!), but plan to this time. But I am beginning to be paranoid about travelling so far from home with her, so I'm gonna need some helpful hints!

1. The longest she's ever travelled is maybe 2 hours in the car. That was a long time ago, and most car rides for her are no more than an hour. She does well in the car- just gets whiney after awhile. She'll be in her carseat or on the seat with me (the only reason she wouldn't be in her carseat is because it's such a long ride, and the carseat is small and not-too-comfy). We'll have water for her with us. I'm kind of worried about being able to stop whenever she needs to go potty. We usually only stop once, maybe twice, on the way there. Is that going to be enough, do you think? I think that part will be okay...

2. What do I need to be sure to bring? Obviously the necessary items- food, foodbowl, bedding, crate and/or pen, leash, harness, identification. I should probably bring bathing items since she'll be playing on the beach. Do I need to worry about medical records? Any other suggestions?

3. I am paranoid about losing her up there. She can't slip out of the harness, but she is known to make a run for the door and ignore me entirely if she's overly excited. The tag on her harness only has my home phone number, and it's pretty faded from rubbing against the rabies tag. What's the best way to ensure anyone who finds her can get ahold of me immediately? We'll be working on 'come' and 'stays' and such, too.

4. She isn't reliably housebroken (though she does better in other people's homes because their carpets don't smell like animals :P). The beach house recently got new carpeting due to flooding from the dishwasher, and it's white with millions of multi-colored specks. The whole house, with the exception of the kitchen and dining area, is carpeted. I'm paranoid about her peeing on the carpet even once and thinking that's okay! I didn't get housetraining right the first time, so I need help housetraining her while we're there. Also, she isn't on a feeding schedule, and I don't know how long she can hold it during the night. Crating her at night isn't an option- she came from a pet store, and has no denning instinct. Should I start her on a feeding schedule now? I normally just feed her whenever she tells me she's hungry (by scratching her foodbowl), and that ends up being about twice a day (once if she has kibbles left over from dinner the night before). And what about her holding it overnight? I'm thinking of confining her to the kitchen/dining area at night (I can put her metal pen straight across), so she can still see me in the livingroom where I sleep, but she's on tile. She is paper-trained, so I could put newspaper down for her in there. I'd just rather she went potty outside every time, while we're there.

If I leash her to me at the house, and take her to a designated potty spot every hour and praise her when she goes, will that be enough? What should I do at night?

Sorry for how long this is... You all know I'm a paranoid dog mommy. Thanks for any and all suggestions! I REALLY appreciate it!!

Hello and welcome back! LOL I just took a 5hr car trip with my HUsky this past summer to my aunt's so I hope i can help ye out!

1) We only stopped once during the ride because we left very early in the morning to go there and really late at night to come home so he slept the entire time and was fine. Actually when we did stop he didn't even go potty! He just kinda ran around with me, shared some fries then went back to sleep LOL

2) Deffinately bring medical records and if possible registration papers. That way if something happens the vet knows her medical history, or if she gets lost/stolen you can easily prove she's yours. If you have one I'd bring her crate, it's amazing how handy these things are and also new places are overwhelming for some dogs so it is nice for them to have their own little area just like home. Also make sure to bring her favourite toys! A Greenie or a pig ear would be good to give her during the car ride too as it would giver her somethng to be occupied with during the ride. Also make sure you bring lots and lots of water from your home, sometimes water from a new place can give a dog upset stomach so you need to introduce it slowly over a couple days like you would a new food.

3) Buy a relatively cheap collar (one that is strong enough that won't fall off while she plays, but doesn't have to be so strong to hold her for walks since you use a harness) and take a permanent marker and write your name and number of where you'll be staying directly on the collar. It's cheaper than making a new tag, won't fade or wash away (as long as you make sure to use permanent black marker) and can be used if you go back to the same place again. You can also get these tags that are capsules and inside is a piece of paper with all your info on it so you could put in the info of where you'll be staying instead. The nice thing about the capsule tag, is that it can be used for any trip whereas you'd need a cheap collar for each place you'll be staying at.

4) Deffinately get her on a feeding schedual!!!!! This will help her with not only potty-training, but dog's prefer to have a boringly repetitive strict schedual so they can anticipate what to come rather than it always being a surprise. Get her on a potty schedual too. At this point I wouldn't take her to one spot in the yard to go potty as she'll need to be used to going in strange areas in front of people when at the beach anyways so instead I would take her for a short walk when taking her to go potty, even if it is just around your property. Reward her highly when she goes and try to avoid letting her go in the same spot every time. I'd deffnately take her out throughout the night as she's not trained. Maybe around 2am if you go to bed at 10 and wake up at 6.

BTW don't be alarmed if she hardly ever goes potty while on vacation or eats. My Husky ate like 3 kibbles during all 5 days we were at my aunts (he got scraps from family member much to my disapproval though) and he only pooped once the entire time contrary to his consistant twice a day.

Cheers!

You could have her in her crate while driving. Give her something to chew on like a toy or something. If it only takes 5 hours to get there, and she didn't seem as if she REALLY needed to go or didn't need to go at all, I'd say one potty break but she might need 2-+.

You could try a retractable lead if you don't want her off-leash.

I suggest getting a new tag, with name, number, address, and state. Before you open the door (such as if you are going somewhere, someone is at the door etc.) put her in an exercise pen or other room, or tie her somewhere, just to be safe. You might want to get a tag that has the number of the beach house on it too.

She needs a feeding schedule. My girls are fed once a day. Start the schedule BEFORE you leave so that she's used to it and not everything seems so different to her. Two of my girls sleep in crates while the other sleeps next to me (on her own bed). If an ex-pen is a possibility, this gives you the option to place a bowl of water or food, some toys, an eliminating spot, etc. inside with her.

Bailey goes with me on every vacation at least twice a year. I usually go to the beach for a few days a couple of time a year. She loves it soooooo much. I bring Bailey's bed/blankies and litter box (she is litter trained) and tons of toys for her. Some of her toys are old (for comfort) and some are brand new (to keep her busy). I bring water from home and her own food and bowls.
When we go out on the beach I keep her on a 16 foot retractable leash. I never let her off leash unless we are completely alone and I can't see anyone in either direction. If I do let her off leash, I use her tennis ball and a game of fetch to keep her near me and I keep an extra ball in my pocket in case I need to get her back to me quickly. I stay away from the waves but Bailey is scared of them and won't go near them either.

The hardest part of the vacation for you will be to get your little pup to go potty on a leash when you want her to. I would start practicing everyday right away. I know many dogs that will not go potty on the leash. My Mom's dog held both pee and poo for 15 hours because she refused to go on the leash. Then her dog did it in the house because she couldn't hold it any longer. Start walking your pup on a leash when it't time for her to potty and give her a command like "Go Potty" then give her a super yummy treat (I use tiny bits of hotdog) when she does it. This way she will be used to performing on a leash when you go on vacation. Then since she is not 100% on her potty training I would take her every 1-2 hours and then crate her at night if she is used to being crated. You won't want her to cry all night either.

I can't wait to take Lucy on vacation to the beach for the first time. I will be nervous keeping control of two dogs. I won't take her until all of her obedience classes and potty training are finished. It will be fun to see Bailey running on the beach with Lucy.

Thank you so much!!

Thanks for the water reminder, esp. The water up there is really soft, so it is alot different than our's. I wouldn't of thought of that. The collar or capsule tag sounds perfect. I'm a little worried because the beach house has no phone, so we rely on our cell phones up there. My dad's cell phone was the only one with reiable reception, and he just got a new phone. :-S I'll just put every phone number possible on her. lol We'll have someone taking care of our house here, so even if she gets lost and someone calls our house, we'll be able to get the message.

Gaddy- we'll definitely bring the retractable for beach walks. Around here there's nowhere to use it because we walk alongside roads, so that'll be good!

Barrett- She will go potty on-leash, at least (thank goodness!). She goes whenever we go on walks, and not in the same spot either. So that should go okay. She can't be crated as she freaks out. She'd keep the whole house (and probably the neighbors!) up literally all night. She'll have enough of a problem being behind the exercise pen. She normally sleeps in a butterfly chair with her comforter in our room at night. Maybe I should bring that! lol It does fold, so maybe I'll be obsessive and do that. LOL

Okay, so, feeding schedule immediately. And I'll plan on taking her out every hour during the day (at least until I'm sure she'll let me know when she needs to go out.), and then every several hours at night. I'm grateful I'm a nightowl so I can take her out around 12, again at 4, and then maybe I can talk daddy or mommy into taking her out at 6. We'll see!

*phew* Thank you so much! That gives me such a peace of mind having a plan! I am so excited to take her, as she really is going to adore the beach! Plus there are lots of little beach towns we can take her to and explore. Gonna be GREAT!

We regularly travel with our 2 for more than 5 hours. We stop every 2 hours for them to have a nibble of something to eat and for a bit of a run. They have a non spill bowl of water in the car which we top up and refresh every 2 hours too. I bought a cheap mobile phone and have that number on the pet ID tag so where ever we are we can be contacted. Not sure what to suggest about the peeing problem as we tow a caravan so if they have any "accidents" it's our carpet not anyone else's.

Yup that's EXACTLY what I was talking about!!!!! It'd deffinately be a lot cheaper than a new collar and it's more efficient eh?

Cheers!

Oh ya and as for taking the butterfly chair, if it's convenient I would, it'd be her own little area in a strange place since she doesn't like her crate, it'd be perfect! I'd also recommend making a rule (if you have anyone else she doesn't know staying with you, especially if they have children!) that if she's on her chair she is not to be bother at all, then she knows that if things are becoming overwhelming she has her own place to retreat to for a bit of peace and quiet which means less stress on her.

Cheers!

Cozy travels alot. It's very important to stop often when driving. For a 5 hour drive, we stop at least 5 times! She may or may not relieve herself every time, but she enjoys getting out of the car. She gets anxious on long drives. Remember, dogs smell fumes from the car and the road that we don't. You may not be able to talk your family into stopping that often, but try to get them to stop several times.
A crate is good to travel with in the car for lots of reasons, including an accident. A Yorkie will be killed by an airbag.
If your Yorkie is prone to bolting for the door, I would leave a leash on her whenever I was with her. (except at bedtime, of course). It makes it easier to stop her or catch her.
The first thing we do when we go to a hotel is put down Cozy's pee pad. Instead of confining her in a separate room, you might try putting her crate on a chair pulled up next to your bed at night. I understand her past, but she may try to wake you up now if she has to go.
And bring some odor neutralizer in case she does go on the carpet.
I don't carry health records unless I'm going out of state or traveling by air. Cozy doesn't have any health problems. I do carry her vet's phone numbers...office, cell and home.
Have fun with your little dog!

Thanks, Kit. I was hoping you'd answer since I knew you travelled alot with your Yorkie.

Missie won't be near any air bags. I think if we were in an accident and she was in her crate she'd be hurt worse than if she was in her carseat. Slamming into metal bars has got to be more painful than being jerked against your harness, I think.

At night, she wouldn't be in a seperate room. The livingroom is right off the dining room, with no seperation. I'd just put a metal pen straight across between the two so she stays on tile. I sleep in the livingroom, so she'll be able to see me at all times, and I'll be able to hear her. The other problem with the crate is she hates it. She freaks out barking and scratching when she's put in it- even with yummy chew toys and bedding and all in there. She'll do fine behind the pen, I think (and hope!).

Thanks everyone!

Do you have phone numbers and directions to a vet near your vacation home? I always print out directions and phone numbers to a normal hours vet and an emergency vet in the area just in case something happens. I keep them in the glove box so I don't have to hunt for them when I am freaking out.
