A bit of a scare...
I left the house to take the dogs out for a walk and accidentally dropped a leash while I was locking the door. Of the three leashes I could have dropped- I dropped the absolute worst one: Saboo's. I shoved Hippo and Stanley back in the house and took off after her.
There's a big golf course across the street that's filled with bunnies and geese, so she high-tailed it over there. Thankfully, there's a 6' chainlink fence that runs between the edge of the course and the street, so cars weren't really an issue. She gets loose occasionally, always by accident, and generally I "herd" her onto the 7th hole- it's a peninsula that juts out into a huge pond. I didn't even think about the fact that it's been really cold and the pond was freezing over. Saboo ran straight out onto the ice... and fell through. I went in right after her- I broke through immediately and started wading out towards her- by the time I reached the spot she had fallen in at, she'd managed to make her way out on the other side. She immediately started licking at herself. I waded the rest of the way over and wrapped her in my hoodie and walked home as fast as I could manage. Thankfully the water was never over my waist, so my sweatshirt was dry for her. She and I are both curled up in bed now- her temperature is normal now (101.2), and I'm the only one shivering. |

Whoa! Talk about terrifying.
I'm so glad everything is ok now though. Cass. |

Oh my gosh!!
How frightning is that! I'm glad to hear Saboo is recovering well after her little scare. You must have been in complete shock! |

So glad you are both ok - that would have been horrible. I wonder if she'll take off again after that experience.

She will. In the eight years I've had her, she's pulled similar stunts a number of times. Once she was lost for several days in a town hours from home- I was young and my parents were preparing me for the worst, but things worked out. She scales 6' chainlink fences, she digs under other fences, she can leap like a deer, she's chewed through god knows how many leashes and even two different plastic coated steel cables, we went through about a few crates in the first 18 months we had her, and she's even been known to chew through sheetrock in her younger days. She's a hellion, but I love her. This event really scared the **** out of me, to be quite frank. I'm so glad that it happened in the part of the pond it did, because the pond is huge and she wouldn't have been able to make it out on her own elsewhere and I would have been swimming as opposed to wading. She's curled up on the power supply for my laptop (it gets really warm), and my fiance brought me home soup, so we're both warm and toasty now. It seems so ridiculous that this dog that I've had for 8 years would just take off like that, but I suppose that's the curse of having a sighthound. It's mind-boggling to me that this same dog can train so successfully in agility, yet when faced with the prospect of a great big world to sprint through... her ears turn off! |

Yikes! How frightening! Glad you are both okay! Don't basenji's tend to be on the stubborn side?
