Cross & Gaddy - I agree on spoiling and babying also. I hate it when people will buy specially made outfits for their dogs that match THEM or their PURSE (or handbag). I saw a lady a while ago in the Thrift Store, and I guess it was something where you could bring your dog into stores with you? I have no idea, but she had a toy poodle, and it had pink bows in her hair, and the little handbag she had was pink... well, there was a little girl in front of us that wanted to see the dog. So she asked the lady if she could pet her, well while the lady was holding her, and the kid started to pet her, the dog turns around and started growling and showing its teeth. She just laughed and said "She must not want to be bothered." I don't like it when people mostly bring their dogs into public when they're not people or dog friendly. Last night I was at PetSupermarket with Sarge and we were making new tags for them. Well some lady came in with this medium sized mix breed, and the dog was trying to attack Sarge, its hair was raised, and it was barking and growling... I don't get it, why bring your dog into a PETSTORE when your dog isn't friendly? BTW went there again today, and saw a BEAUTIFUL doberman! He was gorgeous, and he liked Sheiba Sheiba actually wanted to play with him, which is strange for her because she mostly doesn't get along well with other dogs sometimes. But I know now I definetly want a dobe when I get out... |

Yup lil dogs sure have it easy! OC's allowed in a few stores around town as the owners know he's well behaved and they love to visit with him and some even have bisquits stored behind the counter just for him. Well one day I went into Shopper's Drugmart (a convenience store and pharmacy) and a lady saw me go in with OC as she was in the process of tying up her dog to a post (I can't stand it when people leave their dogs tied up outside a store but that's another story) so she decided to bring in her big St Bernard (gorgeous dog might I add!). Well it turned out this dog was severly untrained! He came barling in growling at OC and it was all this women could do in an attempt to slightly slow the dog down. People in the store grabbed on to the dog's leash and it took 5 people to stop him. One helper got nipped by the dog and the manager told the woman to leave and never bring her dog in again. A few moneths later I was in Shopper's Drugmart again and this other woman brought in her little yorkie in a hand bag and when the lil guy saw OC he was growling and trying to dog out of the handbag. When a customer asked to see the Yorkie the owner got bit as she tried to bring him out. Then he jumped out and was running circles around OC growling and sometimes snapping and getting a mouth full of fur. OC just sat there looking pathetic and the women was yelling at her dog to come back because "The big Husky didn't want to play". Of course she didn't get told to leave only that her dog had to be either kept on a leash or put into her handbag and kept there. When the manager tried to visit with the Yorkie she also got nipped but both she and the owner just laughed saying "I guess she's still wanting to play". I wanted to give them a piece of my mind but I didn't want it to turn into some how OC getting kicked out too.

I will admit I take Duke out to Petsmart and the feed store sometimes. I usually go when there is the least chance of many other dogs being there. (I took him one Saturday morning, forgetting that it was adoption day.) I try to keep him a good distance away from any dogs that happen to be there, unless he doesn't seem to mind them. He's actually terrified of other dogs, but he puts that fear into agression. (A good offence is the best defence sort of thing I guess.) He does however take to, or ignore, about 50% or more of the dogs, so it's not too bad having him along. There was a small mix breed that he adored and wanted to stalk around the store, and some Great Danes that he was intrigued by. It seems to be retrievers that he hates, most specifically black labs. He's iffy with dogs, but I don't laugh and put a bandaid over the problem. I don't find it funny that my dog wants to kill your dog. And I hate ignorant people that think it is funny when their little dog is barking/growling/running circles around my dog, the whole time he's shaking because he's scared out of his mind.

I don't see what is funny about small dogs acting aggressive either. Just because their small and you may be able to carry them around in a bag or dress them up in tutus doesn't mean they have the right to go around growling, snapping, biting, and fully attacking people. I have a friend who has a Boston Terrier. She works with her and the dog is pretty nice, but she doesn't like being picked up much so she will nip lots of times if you try to. Automatically people are going to put a dog that is biting them down, but they should really continue to hold the dog, and correct it when it bites. If they set it down, they are teaching it that if it doesn't want something done to it, or wants something done all it has to do is bite. |

That's the story she told me about, cause we got into talking about how most times when the news reports these bites/attacks, they aren't even pitbulls. She said she's had many cases where dogs have come in and if they had attacked or bit someone, they were called "pitbulls". She said sometimes they will change the names on the dogs breed just to help adopt them out (if infact they're pit/pit X. Anywho, back on subject.. went to my cousins house where the yappy, snappy dogs are. New person came in the house this time, and they wouldn't stop barking... eehhh. Then they were getting up on the chairs and licking stuff off the table and trying to get into peoples plates. ![]() |

I agree 100% with Crossfire and Gaddy. I absolutely love small dogs (although I prefer bigger dogs), but it drives me crazy how they seem to always be getting special priveledges.
For example, I HATE it when a hotel says something like, "Dogs under 20 pounds only." Dogs should not be discriminated by size. I have known small dogs such as Jack Russell Terriers that, if left alone in a hotel room, would completely destroy it in minutes. If hotels are extremely worried about large, rambunctious dogs in their ever-so-perfect hotel, they should require some sort of temperament test. And if a hotel allow dogs, they should allow ALL dogs. It also bugs me that many, many small dogs can get away with murder. A lot (not "all," there are many small dog owners that are very responsible) of small dog owners allow their dogs to jump on people, beg at the table, dig, bark, jump on furniture, pull on the leash, etc. Funny, these usually seem to be the owners that purchased their dog from a pet store. I think it's sad how many small dogs are poorly bred and absolute spoiled brats, because they make wonderful companions if properly bred and trained. |

Not trying to hijack the post but on the topic of breed name changing, Siberian Huskies are often placed on a "Dangerous Breeds" list incorrectly. These guys are not aggressive at all towards humans and in general would be the first to run away from an aggressive human and the first to welcome an instruder with a wagging tail but fue to their similarity with Malamute and Wolf Hybrids (not to mention a pure wolf itself) then on lookers simply say "Oh it was a HUsky" and that's that. 99% of supposed Siberian HUsky attacks were really by another breed (according to the book Siberian Huskies for Dummies). It's pretty sad if you ask me.
On a lighter note, near where I live there is a city called Cambridge and they recently rescued a severly emaciated dog that was being kept in a tiny cage in a children's play room and covered in it's own waste. Well they said the dog was a black lab/whippet mix but they showed a pic of it in the paper and on the news and it's so obviously a pit bull!!! LOL Cheers! |

)....you can't really say a dog is automatically "mean" without meeting it. Besides, even if the breed may be known to be more aggressive or if lots of dogs of that breed have acted aggressively etc., all dogs are different...people think all Pit Bulls are mean, yet lots of those people haven't even met a Pit Bull.Quote:

I do love the fact that Bailey and Lucy are so small and I do take them everywhere with me. I put them in their backpack carrier and take them shopping with me. Most of the time no one knows they are even in there. In certain stores and in the main part of the outdoor mall I let Bailey walk on leash. I think it's great socialization for them to go to so many new places and meet new people. Bailey loves everyone and gets all wiggly and excited when people bend down to pet her. I think the reason she has such a great personality is because I use every opportunity to get people to pet her and give her treats and socialize with her. I also admit my dogs are spoiled rotten and can't do anything wrong in my eyes. When Bailey steals a pen off the desk I think it's cute and marvel how smart she was to figure out how to get up there in the first place. I trade her a treat fot the pen and try to make sure she can't get up there again. She is an absolute clown and has me rolling on the floor laughing at her everyday. I did teach her manners, mostly for other people who have to be around her...not for me. She isn't allowed to jump or beg or chew things that don't belong to her. She has learned to sit on her pillow until someone calls her or goes to her if I have a house full of people. I don't want her under foot or to bother certain people that don't appreciate dogs as much as my family. Most of the time my house guests are holding her and letting her give them slobbery kisses but she is trained to sit still if I want her to.
I don't like it when I go somewhere and have to deal with untrained, un socialized, aggressive dog....especially a small dog. I know small dogs have a bad rep for being ankle biting, yippy-barky, frightened little wimps and I didn't want my dog to be that way. It all depends on how you raise them. |

"Nothing is ever easy"

This is kinda changing the subject also, but when we were at our Grandma's for Christmas, me and my cousins got on the subject of what kind of dogs we liked. I said I liked the Boxers and Jenny says, 'I like the smaller dogs. I want to get a miniature Yorkie, a miniature Chihuahua and there is this miniature mixbreed that lives down the street that is so cute so I want on of them too.'
In my mind I was thinking, 'A miniature Yorkie or Chi? And a mini mixed breed? Probably a Cock-a-poo or something. Yesh.....' And she was just going on and on about how cute they were. (Nothing about their temperment.) And then my other cousin Allie says, 'Once I'm in Collage, I want to get a Pug-' I broke in and said, 'You do know that Pugs shed a lot and snore and fart don't you?' and she says, 'I don't care. I just like their googly eyes. I also want to get a Min Pin-' I broke in agian saying, 'And you do know that those are hard to train and are stubborn?' and she says, 'I don't care. I think they are really cute. And I also like Bulldogs because of the way the walk.' Agian I was thinking, 'You just want these dogs because they are cute? What about there temperment?!?' I held my tounge, but I was about ready to start saying, ' There is know such thing as a mini Yorkie or Chi or whatever, Cock-a-poos or Schnoodles or whatever AREN'T breeds, and you shouldn't just get a dog because it looks cute!!!!!' Sometimes my cousins make me a little mad. ![]() And also we went to our Aunt's house for our Christmas on my dad's side and they had a Great Dane. (A BEAUTIFUL dog. It was a brindle color and it's name was Tora. That is Japaneese for Tiger. And MAN was it big.....) After everybody was done unwrapping presents, it ate a little peice of wrapping paper. Susan (my cousin that had the dog) got the peice of paper out of Tora's mouth and as soon as the peice of paper was out yelled, 'Bad dog! You don't eat paper!' And I thought like saying, 'You do know you just scolded the dog for letting you take the paper out of its mouth don't you?' I didn't though because it was her dog and not mine. I should have though......*sigh* Anyways, I'm done now. I just had to share that. |
