Sad day

I was driving to the grocery store and saw a bunch of cars stopped in the middle of the road. I saw a few people grouped around a dog that was hit by a car. I stopped to see if I could help since my vet was only 5 minutes away. I figured I could put the dog in the back of my subaru and run him over to my vet. When I got up to the dog I knew he was already gone. All I could do was get a tarp from my car and cover him up. Then the family that owned the dog drove up and saw him. The young girl started screaming and crying. I just stood there with my arm around her and her Mom, not knowing what to say or do, I just cried with them. I helped put the dog on the tarp and some men put him in the back of her car. I followed them to their house and helped put the dog in the garage. Since the mom and daughter live alone I offered to come over tomorrow and help them bury him in the back yard. My husband will be home tomorrow and he said he would help me. Tomorrow night we are going to buy some flowers and a headstone for the family to remember their beloved dog by. We will get it engraved with his name. It feels like a terrible Christmas gift to give a stranger.

Oh Barrett, that is sad. I'm glad that you were the one there to help the owners. I think your gift will be a wonderful. Now, every year at Christmas instead of just remembering the tragic loss of their dog, they will be able to also remember the kindness of a stranger.

It makes me so sad to know I have two wonderful dogs in my lap right now and they are crying for their poor dog. Why did they leave him in the backyard with out a gate? They said he always stays in the yard and they were only going to be gone for a minute. He didn't even have a collar and tags on. What a tragic mistake.

That is awful. What a horrible way for that poor family to begin the Christmas holiday. I agree with flyndog, they will also be able to remember the great kindness, compassion, and care you showed for them and their beloved family member. That's a great present to give someone.

Oh man Barrett I'm sorry you had to go through that. And I feel for the people who lost their dog.
Last year I was sitting in my living room with hubby watching T.V and I heard a loud sound and went to look at it was a Akita(sp?) that had been hit by a truck so I yelled for my husband who runs out to help the dog. The poor thing gets up and tries to walk and then falls down again just as his owner comes running up the street. Apparently he had just gotten home from work and when he opened up his door the dog darted out and he chased the dog which made it run into the road. The poor thing was 12 yrs old and the owner was a mess, they rushed it to the vet but it was too late.
It's just horrible to whitness another persons pet die and then try to comfort them, I will never forget it...

I have actually never seen a dog or cat get hit by a car until yesterday. I know it happens all the time but I was fortunate enough never to witness it. Now it's all I can think about today. My Husband is in the air, on his way back from Chicago and I can't wait for him to get here. I am going to pick up the headstone on my way to the airport. When the mom gets home from work we will go over and help put "Pogo" to rest.
