Just Need Advise.

Ok..so I have 10 new puppies. I have been mommy to them from the start due to the mother dog not liking them. Thats besides the point today. I know that i'm getting a little attached to them but who wouldn't at this point. So I have this issue that i'm wondering if it's because i'm attached or if i'm just right on the ball.

Here's the thing. I had this lady and her two daughters come by cause she heard that we have new pups. So as they are looking at the puppies..I hear the awwwwww and ohhhhhhhh and the I want one. Which is normal..and I do have 3 left that will be up for sale. So she says to me...I would like to buy one if my husband agree's and she would like the little female one. I tell her it's hard to pick one now due to them not having a personality and all...ect...since they are only 13 days old. I tell her she should stop back later and see which of the 3 would be right for her and visa versa. She agree's.

**** So she calls me this morning...and say's to me

" Hi, was talking to my hubby and she says since we already have 4 dogs...3 out side and one inside beagle..8 months old. that if I get rid of 2 then I can have one of yours". Ok..i'm like....what the heck" to myself. Why would you get rid of 2 to take another. Does that mean when you see another puppy in the future your going to pass the one I sold to you down the road. I mean now i'm confused and torn...do I sell this person a puppy or not????? I mean why would you part with 2 dogs ..unless you don't really care about them in the first place. I need some advice here friends.

I do have the right to sell or not...and in my mind..i think maybe this puppy will be the one that changes there feelings about dogs...maybe make them love it so much that you can't just get rid of it for a different one....or who am I to judge this persons motives. I need some input here. Thanks and anything will help.

You most definately do not have these people take a puppy! OMG, never in a million years!

I think it would also be in the best interest of these pups to interview any potential owner and TELL THEM, after discussing whether you think one of the pups would be right for them or not. It shouldn't come down to whoever can pull out the money.

I'd very carefully screen each individual, and watch for any red flags. What you've told me about this family, is a BIG RED FLAG!

See thats what I think also. I mean I would never be able to get rid of one of my dogs just to have another...if anything I would have to just have another dog. See..the 7 pups are spoken for..with close friends of ours. I know them very well. But the the last 3 will be the ones for sale to others...so I will be very careful on whom gets one and who doesn't...now that I have had this person play with my thoughts and feelings. Thanks British...I'm glad you posted me back.

Also..us having these puppies was not about money at all. ~smiles~.

i suggest you do this:

first an inteveiw with the people

HOME VISIT- like at the shelter i volunteer at we do a home visit to see where the dog will live and how he will be taken care of-

those people do not need one of your dogs i can already see it being passed down to a shelther ect

i understand where you are coming from with what you said as quoted but at the shelter i usually think some families will have a great time with a dog/cat and usually i see them coming back toreturn the animal for one reason or another

Absolutely not. As a breeder myself, that would have almost made me just hang up the phone. I'm not trying to be rude here, but there is no way I would sell her the pup.

No, no no no no no no no no no no no no NOOOOOO...not ever in a million years or for a million dollars would I give those people a puppy. Never. Everything they are volunteering to you are HUGE red warning flags, bells and whistles, flashing alarms...you name it... for anyone that's ever placed a dog...

I agree...these people should never be allowed a pup (or an adult dog...or a cat...or a bird..or a mouse...or a goldfish). You want people who are devoted to the pup for life, not just until something better or more cute comes along.

Cass.

I agree with what everyone here has said. Never ever, would I give these people a puppy. Dogs are obviously just material things to them, and will dispose of the dogs whenever they are bored with it or something "better" comes along.

That wouldn't even be a question I'd have to ask anyone. I'd hang up on her. What a ding-bat. Bet she feeds her dogs ol Roy and never takes them to a Vet. I'd give my pups to a Rescue before I'd sell them to anyone just for the money. Hope you don't have any more like that wanting one. I'd screen anyone who wanted one. Make them give you a Vet. refrence.

I agree 100% that's the best way to find out how well the animals are cared for.

Not in a million years would I let her have a pup. I'd be so angry I'd probably say something nasty, and hang up.
If I kept my cool I might be able to sensibly refer her to a rescue because I'd rather she not have the dogs she already has either.

I just want to thank everyone for your advise. I will not be selling this woman a puppy. I have also found out that her dogs outside do not even have a dog house to be in. I live in Northern Wisconsin and last night the temp was 4 degree's. I was so upset this morning when I took a ride past her house and seen the 3 dogs tied to different tree's. To top that...they all had what appeared to be a blanket or rag of some sore that they were laying on.
So I came back home and called the rescue center in our county and reported them. They were going to take care of it this morning.
I feel so good about doing this. I am helping those dogs and maybe this person will think about what she has done.
The other thing is...I live in a town of 500 persons. Everyone knows everyone. I can't believe someone else didn't do anything about it before me. She has all kinds of neighbors. WOW.
Thanks everyone for your thoughts and advise.

you did the right thing by informing the humane society

please do what calgal and i stated a home check and a reference

also make sure of what vet they use and since it is up to you i think it would be a good thing if you ask the potential owners to send you up-dated pictures and letters (if they live far away)
