I did a bad thing

Today me and my friend went to the petstore. I decided I wanted to play with all the puppies. Don't worry I didn't get one but they were just the cutest little things. I feel so bad for the poor things stuck in a glass box. I saw my first boston terrier puppy I didn't get maggie as a puppy and had never seen one in person. We also played with 2 little cavelier King Charles spanials and a wire haired dachshund and they were the cutest little things I had ever seen. I was really sad though because the little boston terrier was sick and had a fat worm belly and just didn't seem very happy or playful like a normal puppy. My friend said she wanted a puppy and I told her she better not get one from a pet store...
Oh and they had several puppies they had 2 boston terriers, 2 pugs, 2 boxers, 2 lab mixes that someone had brought in, a yorkie, 2 chihuahuas, a maltese, a peke, and a little wirehaired mixbreed pup. They have a whole wall full of puppies.

For every puppy you see in a pet store, think of where that mother is. She's in a wire cage with no good food, stagnated water, in pain with rotten teeth and gums, sores on her feet, eaten up with fleas, no way to keep warm, no petting, no Vet. no meds. for her suffering, and made to breed at every heet till she can't breed any more then she is shot. For every puppy bought in a pet store, it lines the millers and shop owners pockets.

I know exactly how you feel. I can't help myself, I always go into pet stores and look at the animals, especially the puppies and kittens. It use to make me so happy to see them but now that I'm an adult and understand where they come from it breaks my heart to see them there. Yet I can't help but look.
Don't feel bad about playing with the puppies, it's not their fault they're there. Just think that you probably made their day playing with them.
And we know you know better than to buy...no matter how sad they seem. Thankyou for warning your friend off them too.

Cass.

I know what you mean Cass - I can't help but look at them either. I really wish they didn't have to be there at all

I remember when I was really young and wanting a Yorkie (before I got Missie, obviously), my mom let me go into a pet store in the mall. They had a Silky Terrier puppy, just as cute and tiny as was possible. It had a high price tag (I don't remember how much now), and my Mom was terrified I'd drop it and we'd have to buy it (we couldn't afford it at all), but the salesman let me hold it. It was like part of a dream coming true that day, getting to hold that precious little pup. I think I remember scheming how to come up with the money, but I'm not sure.

ITA. Why can't they do like our local PetsMart? They allow rescue groups bring in dogs and cats for adoption. I go in and drool over the wonderful animals and buy stuff I don't need.

You know what I saw once that I couldn't understand? A pet store selling puppies (horrendous mixes for horrendous prices), with a rescue group adopting out pets in front of it. I guess one can hope people adopted outside and only went in to coo over the puppies, but I just thought it so wierd. Like did either the business or the group actually benefit from that arrangement?

And I agree, Beryl. I wish every pet store did that, and made a huge effort to only bring in rescued animals of all kinds (like the small animals. Fish from breeders would be fine).

Aww, poor babies! I worked in the kennel of a pet store a few years ago before I was completely educated about the puppy mills.. I knew some stuff, but not much. It was the worst job ever.. the things I saw, the things I found was sickening. Luckily they were shut down, it's not gonna do much, but one less pet store that sells puppies around here. Oh, I felt so terrible for them, it was very unbearable.

I'm not "allowed" to go in to Pet stores that sell puppies. I know that I would want to buy them all! I just stay away! I'll stick with stores like PetSmart and PetCo that help with adoptions.

Exactly calgal. So sad, I get bent every time we have to go into the pet store here in town that sells pets, unfortunately they are the only ones who sell Canidae too.

They actually do not get their puppies from puppy mills. They get them mostly from backyard breeders and sometimes accidental mutt puppies. Any puppy that anyone will give them they will take and sell. My poodle Angel that I used to have was actually purchased by me and my mom from this petstore about 5 years ago. We have learned a lesson and will always get rescues from now on... Oh I went there again monday and played with the boxer puppies and little lab mix puppy they were so sweet and attacked my shoelaces. lol

Oh here is Angel she was my mom's baby. To tell you the truth she didn't really like me. She died a little over a year ago because she bolted out the door and got hit by a car. She was the pet shop puppy. Notice her brown nose and apricot ears?
