That sounds crazy! I know how hard it can be to toilet train a dog who isn't really getting the concept, but the key is perseverance. I think if I was able to train a Chihuahua to be 100% house trained (even if it did take like 3 years or so), then anyone can do it.

I do see it has it's place in shows, but I don't think it should be used as a training method.

I agree, it shouldn't be used as a tool for potty training as the dog would never put two and two together ie... match goes there and that means I have to potty outside instead of on the living room carpet. In my own opinion, any vet that would suggest this as a means to potty train really needs to re-evaluate their own soundness as a veterinarian as well as refrain from trying to teach owners to be lazy.

The reason a match is used is because it's the least evasive / cheapest thing around to use. It's harmless cardboard so no chemicals to hurt the dog, very thin so as not to cause pain or tearing and it's very bendable so it won't do damage or cause any type of scratching etc...

The match head makes a fine little grip to keep control of it as well. Nasty I know but true. The cardboard just provides enough of a tickle to stimulate the muscles so that if the dog would need to do it's business normally within the next two hours or so it would simply do it then instead.

I told my mom about this. And you know what she told me?

She said that when my brothers and I were babies, if we'd go too long without a bowl movement, she did something similar to stimulate us to go. Only she'd use a Q-tip with vaseline. Hmff! LOL

now Ive heard of the Q-tip thing and Ive heard of using a damp cloth on baby animals to help them, cause the mom stimulates them when they are babies...but a match just seemed odd to me.

I hope so too. Matching certainly isn't a potty training tool.

I've wondered that from time to time myself and I'm betting thats probably exactly how it happened. lol

Really the best thing to use though if you think about it, what else out there could be less evasive and not put chemicals into the system.
