You are NOT going to believe this one

I was speaking to one of my customers and we were talking about our dogs ( I had seen his wife in petsmart with theirs the day b4) He was telling me they were having a terrible time housebreaking her (the dog not the wife...lol). Anyway, in offering some suggestions..ie a crate ect.. he told me his VET told him to stick a match in the rear end to instantly make the dog poop . Have any of you ever heard of such a thing?? I freaked out...told him absolutely DO NOTdo that and the proceeded to get his vets name. What the f***???

I've heard of it too, but as KennelMom says, not something I would ever do.

It's actually quite a common and painless practice. Lots of people, when about to go in the show ring will make sure their dog doesn't go while showing or else he'd be disqualified. So they take them out back and put a paper match (the little cardboard, soft ones, not the wooden ones) just 1/2 of it in, cardboard part first, not the sulfer part and it stimulates their muscles to go and out it comes along with their bowel contents. Not a big deal at all, no pain, just a little tickling sensation I expect.

We have to stick thermometers in their rears and sometimes even go in with a gloved finger (in Lyric's case when he was younger) to express the anal glands. If something that thick doesn't bother them (Lyric didn't mind at all) then how could a tiny, skinny match stick bother them. The anus and rectum is very stretchable.

It's actually called "matching" and yes, it's a fairly common practice in show circles but NOT for potty training. Nothing really mean or cruel about it. It's a paper match and a thermometer is far worse.

I don't think that is something a Vet. should be telling someone who is trying to train their dog. Good for you for letting him know the proper way to train.

You are kidding, right? (sorry, I'm chuckling) No, you do not light the match. The slight tickly sensation of that little paper thing gets them to hurry up and go. I wouldn't want a dog to become dependent on that aid for the process of house breaking. But in an emergency where you need the dog to hurry it up, there is nothing cruel about it.

That does sound strange. I can see why it would be used for the show ring but certainly not an everyday housetraining aid. When I first read it I thought someone needs to put something up the vet's butt! LOL

Does a dog in the states actually get disqualified for pooping in the ring??

In Canada if it happens the ring steward just calls for a clean up and we continue as if nothing happened.
Of course no one wants their dog to poop in the ring, it is embarrassing, but not that big of a deal.

This is true in the show (conformation) ring, but not in the obedience and other competitive rings. If a dog eliminates in the obedience, agility, or other competitive rings, it is an immediate disqualification.

Wow I have never heard that before - learnt something new today and it's only 6:30 in the morning!!

I don't see how that could possibly help toilet train a dog - it's not teaching it to go to the right spot when it needs to go at all!

Like most people here I can see it's purpose in competition, and I agree that it's not cruel...Jesse's pooped on the vets desk more than once because she stuck a thermometer up his butt (so embarassing ), but for housetraining that's just ridiculous.
