Way to stop outside dogs from stinking?
I brought Blackie and Rose inside today. They got a bath and then since it is only like...15degrees outside, I kept them in to dry. Actually, I used this as an excuse to keep them inside for the day.
They were both extreamly good and just laid on the couch and slept the whole day. They didn't have any accidents inside and when I took them out every hour or so, they went potty right away (after they rolled in the snow of course ). They also didn't try to get into the trash or eat Joey, which was a shock. We also found out how loud Blackie snores! lol And we even vaccumed and they were fine with it, which was another shock. But then I got to thinking...they are around when my dad does his wood working, so I'm sure the vaccum was no big deal. But even after the bath, they both kind of stunk a little bit. Not the *gag* oh-my-God smell, but just...a stink. Almost like a musky smell. I made sure I cleaned their collars, so that wasn't it. Sadie had a doggy smell, but it wasn't near as bad as what they smelled like. I sprayed them with my ferret's perfume stuff (lol) and that helped, though. The smell didn't bug me one bit, but both my mom and my older brother were complaining about it. I kept them in all day, but then I had to put them back outside for the night, because we don't have a place for them to stay inside. I want to bring them in again tomorrow when I get back home from school (and make my mom mad ) but I'm scared that they will have that "stink" even worse, and if that is the case, my mom will NOT let them in. Since Sadie is now gone, I'd really like to turn Blackie and Rose into outside/inside dogs (outside in the kennel while we are gone, but when I'm home they come inside with me), but how do I keep that "smell" to a minimum? There dog houses don't stink (except for the smell of straw), so is it just their coat? They were really soft and shiney, but IDK. Is there any kind of dog deoderant/perfume I can spray on them when they come in that won't just mask the smell but make it go away? |

There are dog "perfumes" (basically just smelly sprays you can get) but IMO they smell worse than the dog in some cases!! Have you tried getting some pet wipes (like baby wipes) - they've only got a really light scent to them and have the added bonus of cleaning away some of the dirt from coats as well (I use them on River when we get home from the beach). I'm not 100% positive they'll work in your situation though - River doesn't really have a lot of that "doggy" smell to him.

It's probably dirt and oil. What kind of shampoo were you using?
Just a thought... do you have crates for them? I think starting with the dogs sleeping inside at night would be good. Crating them could/would be a great idea for getting them used to the house and your parents used to the idea. Other than that, outside dogs just smell sometimes. It may take a while to get the "smell" out of them. Dirt/grime/straw chaf, etc builds up over time. The lab I train/work with has that definite odor but when I see her more often and during the summer she loses it because she's rarely in her outdoor kennel then. But, baby wipes for feet/mouth/around tail and a quick wipe down the back sounds like a good plan too. |

Flyndog - I switched their food about two years ago to Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover's Soul: Senior version. lol
Mom2cocoa - They are outside dogs because when we got them that is where the parents put them, and they have yet to change their ways. I'd love for them to be inside, but my parents, especially my dad, thinks otherwise. My dad has the mentality, "if it is an animal, it belongs outside in the barn/shed/where ever." In fact, he vowed that he would never have a house full of animals. He must really love me or something, because that is exactly what we have! lol (A cat, a bird, two ferrets, and numerous rodents...) And then I find it funny because he also hates loud music, and he lives in a house with two teenagers, two preteens, and a six year old who thinks she is a preteen! Mom could care less, but she doesn't want two big dogs in the house with five kids running around, not to mention the fact that Blackie sheds like crazy. I can just pet him and my hand comes away black. He needs to be brushed out, but for the life of me I can't figure out where my brush went! I need to invest in one of those hound brush/horse currycomb thingies. But she does love dogs (esp. our dogs) and I think that she'd go for after a while. SpringerLover - I'm using this anti-bacterial/deoderizing shampoo by Four Paws, I do believe. It is an orange shampoo in a green bottle! lol I like it; it makes their coat all smooth and shiny. I don't have crates for them, per say. We have one crate (it was Sadie's) that we aren't using anymore as we no longer have Sadie. It is big enough for one of the dogs, but not both. In their whole intire lives (Blackie is eleven and Rose is eight) they have never been in a crate before, so I'm scared of how that would go. They are used to being kenneled, but there is a big difference between the two. I've taken them to work with me before and they've sat in a grooming cage. Blackie was good, he just walked right in and vegged. But Rose didn't like going into the cage and when inside would freeze up and that was when I put her in the same cage as Blackie. She did board at the vet once for three days (she got into some mouse poisen and needed to be monitered/given meds) and they keep them in a steel cage as well, so she must have done ok then. Maybe next week (we have a four day weekend off of school) I can see how they do in a crate. And since I'll need to purchase another one...is there any place I could get a nice quality crate for cheap? And since Rose and Blackie have never been seperated before, would two seperate crates right by each other work ok, or would it be best to just buy a really huge one? I'll have to invest in some baby wipes and doggy perfume too! Here goes another trip to Petsmart. lolWish me luck in convincing my mom that they need to be inside, at least part of the time. |

Rose is Blackie's daughter, a Lab/Cattle dog/GSD mix. (Long story involving a stray that showed up one day). The stink is very noticable when wet, not so much when they are dry. I did also clean their ears and so now they smell like cucumber melon. lol |

Oh. The reason I ask is that my Baxter (Cattledog/Basset) has thick cattledog fur that smells like wet wool when he's wet. Once dry, which takes a while since the fur is so coarse, he smells better.
Does your mom mind the smell when they're dry? I wish I had an answer for you, I love having my dogs inside with me. |

I just had them inside again, and they didn't stink to bad. (Just like....doggy odor shampoo. lol) My mom complained but she didn't make me get them out....
I do have some pics, but they are still on my camera. Let me down load them and I'll post them here! ![]() |

I saw walmart has a cheapish but good wire crate. And definitely two separate wire crates but I would put them right next to eachother.
Even if the dogs are best buds, I think two separate crates would work the best. But before you invest maybe try one in there at a time and see how it goes? As I assume you did with Sadie, keep it positive! Short while in there and give some treats! It's so great you're trying to get them in! Once they adjust *hehe, I know you'll succeed, you have the desire!* I think they'll absolutely love it too! Good luck! (I think the wire crate I saw at walmart was around $50 for the big size, but prices vary by area... otherwise, do you have a "tractor supply" nearby? I saw they had crates for pretty cheap last time I was there {cat sized one for $15}) |
