Guess what?!?
Well, as my mom and I were on our way home from my grad pictures, it gave us a lot of time to talk. We got into the conversation about dogs, which brought me to talking about some things I've been wanting to do.
#1 - I REALLY want to get into fostering. I told my mom about the South Florida Siberian Husky rescue, and she thinks it would be fun. She also thinks huskies would be a better dog for us to foster, since we have three, and they're a bit "different" than other breeds. So having the experience we do is a plus. #2 - I was thinking about enrolling Ike in Therapy Dog classes. He's such a laid back dog. We call him our gentleman. He never jumps (unless I'm playing with him rough) on anyone, and stays calm when meeting new people. He's very well behaved and well mannered. My mom thinks Ike would be excellent for that, so I'm going to contact someone and find out some more information. The reason for my post is that my mom said to do option #1. Since we can't technically HAVE another dog permanently, I think fostering would be a better choice, and it is so rewarding. Plus, I'd be able to tell my dad that it isn't a permanent thing. The dog is just being housed with us until they find it a permanent home. SO, I have printed out the papers, and I'm going to fill them out tonight. The one thing that it did say on the website is that all of our current pets must be spayed/neutered. The two kittens (Biggy and Tiki) are the only one who aren't fixed, and they're both males. Those of you who have fostered --- do you think this will make any difference in whether or not they choose us to be a foster family? We're not saying anything to my dad until we find out whether we'll be accepted. This is exciting I really hope we can do this. |

Because you're fostering dogs rather than cats it *probably* won't be a big deal, but they may ask why they aren't fixed yet or if you have plans to fix them.
Good luck! Be sure to let us know when you're accepted! Sounds like some good activities you've got planned. ![]() |

Thanks TAD. I definetly have intentions of getting them fixed, I just haven't gotten around to fixing them yet, and they're inside cats.
I'll surely let you know. I just feel like I haven't been doing much with my guys lately, and I want to be a little more active. I finally got Kelso to jump on the electrical box (we have this HUGE green box out front, it's safe though). He used to be afraid. So it got me thinking into maybe doing agility with him later on down the road. I just want to be a little more active with them. Since I'm getting closer to being out of school and all, it will give me a lot of time to devote to them and bond. |

That's really cool!
So, do you think there's a chance that your dad might not like you fostering? Hopefully you can bring him around to the idea.Like TAD said, hopefully the cats won't cause any problem to the fostering process (I don't see why they would stop it from going forward). Good luck with everything! Let us know how it goes, I'd be interested to hear. |

Thanks!
Swift - there could be. He may not be happy with it at first, but he usually gets over it. My mom and I are the primary caretakers of the dogs, he just provides them with a bed LOL They all hog his bed at night and I hear "Saarrraahhhh --- I can't move!" His biggest thing is he just doesn't want anymore dogs in the house. But like I said, he really won't be caring for the dog. I'll be the one responsible for it. But, huskies are his favorite, so I know he'll fall for the idea eventually LOL |

Your Dad sounds like my husband. We had two daughters so he usually just went along with what we wanted. Poor guy! LOL Good luck with your application.

I told my mum that I'd love to have a dog to do agility with, and my stepdad said right away "You'll need a house first before you get another dog!" That's the reason I don't want to move out of home just yet.. I'd miss Harley and Abby too much, and I'd be worried that I wouldn't be allowed pets at the new place. It think it's great that you want to get more involved with your dogs, I wish more people were like that. |

). The only other thing is that my brother who lives with us, is EXACTLY like my dad in many ways. He's the same as him when it comes to other animals in the house. Heck, my dad has a cow when I babysit friends dogs. LOL But I think it will all turn out in the long run. I'm excited! I really hope we get accepted. If not there, I'd actually like to look into the boxer rescue we have here, since I love boxers too ![]() Swift, you posted before me. Hehe -- Yeah. He just has a drive to do something, I just have never been able to figure out what. I think that if I had a stick in my hand, and worked him through the different obstacles, he'd do great at it. He LOVES sticks, and loves to be praised when he does a good job. He gets so happy when I get excited about him doing something I still throw a party when he rolls over onto his back. That was one of the hardest things for me to teach him, but now he'll roll over onto his back with enthusiasm and throw his paws at you. LOL |

Could you consider pulling dogs from high kill shelters and foster them? I have seen tons of husky and husky mixes as well as boxer mixes in my local shelter getting put to sleep every week.

That's one thing this rescue does. They take huskies from high kill shelters. There are a few on there that were taken off of "death row" in order to have another chance at life. Animal Care and Control is the only place here (that I know) that is high kill (generally 3 months per dog) and they don't have any type of foster program.

oh ok. My local shelter gives dogs 3-7 days before they are euthed. Gracie was luckily given 2 weeks because she was so sweet. I want to one day have a house of my own and foster dogs from this shelter.
