Animals may have fled tsunami

A Reuters report notes that in Sri Lanka, where tens of thousands lost their lives to the Boxing Day tsunami, animals appear to have fled inland before the waves struck.

As governments gear up to spend fortunes on tsunami warning systems, the mystery cannot afford to be overlooked.

Giant waves washed floodwaters up to 3 km inland at Yala National Park in the ravaged southeast, Sri Lanka's biggest wildlife reserve and home to hundreds of wild elephants and several leopards, Reuters said.

"The strange thing is we haven't recorded any dead animals," HD Ratnayake, deputy director of the national Wildlife Department, told Reuters on Wednesday.

"No elephants are dead, not even a dead hare or rabbit," he added. "I think animals can sense disaster. They have a sixth sense. They know when things are happening."

I know, I believe they can sense these things. I had a cat once (spike) and during Tornado season one year I knew something bad was going to happen because of the way he acted, we had a ledge on top of our kitchen cabinets and he climbed up there (didn't say he was smart though..lol)...first time ever. We actually had 7 tornadoes touch down that day and everytime during Tornado season that he would climb up there we knew one was coming and everytime he was right..
Back on the tsunami my prayers are with all who went through that and all who have lost loved ones..this disaster truely has touched everyone.

Tsunamis have electromagnetic waves that the animals can sense. And that may be what saved them. Also interestingly the animals in that part of the world had been acting strangely for the past 3-4 months did they know what was coming ?

I've been keeping up with that.
I also believe the animals knew what was going to happen. Animals have a remarkable sixth sense.
Scientist say a tsunami can happen here off the coast of North and South Carolina. But, we would have warning here.

Yes I truly believe that animals can sense these things. Actually a lot of native tribes on the western coast of Canada (don't know much about native tribes anywhere else) would look to the animals for signals of something bad happening. OC loves everyone but if he acts strangly with a person I know to watch myself with them because he always has a good reason as to why he won't like them. Animals are amazing!!!

Back to the Tsunami i think it is a very terrible thing that happened because so many lives were lost but me and my parents were talking about it and I knack of trying to find the best of the worst of things and it's a fact that our world's population is getting huge to the point that the world with her natural resources soon won't be able to support us all so we do need something huge to help decrease the population at times and it happens all throughout history. Natural disasters, plagues, plane crashes, etc. Is it fair that that particular area was targeted for the biggest natural disaster in history? Not at all, and it still wouldn't be fair no matter what part of the world it hits but it must happen. I'm not trying to start a debate at all here and keep in mind I still feel terrible for what happened and I know people who have lost loved ones there and it's a very hard time for them.

It really is amazing how well animals can sense things; I've always believed that most people could too in some ways if they really paid attention and sharpened their sense that hardly ever get used in this day and age.

People long ago didn't have radar, the weather channel and things of that nature, they relied on signs from nature, watching the animals and going with their "sense" of things they knew to be true. Technology is a great thing but I often wonder if we're too spoiled by it and ignore what our own senses try to tell us.
