What's the largest veterinary university...
...in the world and in the United States?
There's a great influx of knowledge around here, and some of you are/going to be well versed in veterinary medicine, so I'm wondering if you guys know. The most prominent in the US that I can think of are Cornell (my fave ), UC Davis, U. Penn (my brother's fascinated with this school), and Purdue...I think Iowa State??? So which one is rated better than the other? |

I'm pretty sure that UC Davis is still the largest in the United States and the RVC is the largest in the UK. I only know UC is because it's the school I wanted to attend when I graduated from high school.
RVC is always big talk at Crufts every year as well. I'm pretty partial now though to the University of North Carolina's School of Veterinary Medicine, it was NC that gave me the information and help I needed to keep my boy Ty alive when he was given only two weeks to live ( he suffers from chronic renal failure) and no other school could help. Thanks to them Ty is still going strong 6 months later! ![]() |

I know the biggest in Canada is either University of Guelph, or a University in PEI - not sure of the name - (forget which one)
Cheers! |

well, what are you actually looking for. size, or "rankings".
vet schools aren't ranked against each other - each one has different signature programs and different curriculums, and its almost impossible to compare them to each other in some aspects. with only 27, its not really necessary to rank them, as each provide a perfectly suitable education, with focuses on certain areas depending on each school. ![]() |

No, not rankings. I completely understand that different schools provide different aspects of veterinary medicine. Where some may excell, others may not. Oh, I've learned a lot about how rankings can mean nothing depending on your major (brother went through this a long time ago). I was curious and it just still surprises me that UC Davis is still the largest. I live about 4 hours away and I know A LOT of people who attended there (none who majored in vet med). I'm planning to become a veterinarian, and want to know about more schools. My relatives are painfully close minded when it comes to schools. It's Cal, Stanford, Harvard or nothing
I *hate* it.P.S. Do you know all the vet med schools? I've picked and pried information here and there, and I believe there's one in Texas and Florida? It's nice to be prepared ![]() |

I go to Iowa State University, and I work at the VTH here. ISU's facilities are a bit outdated, but we're great with production animals! We're a very old college - ISU's VM program has been around for 125 years! Disease control and research is also another point of pride for ISU.
As Kim said - every college has their good points. They are all wonderful schools, and all carry about the same amount of prestige IMO. You should choose the college that best fits your needs and interests. |

well, how do you mean "largest". do you mean largest classes? UCDavis doesnt have the largest classes, at least not as of when i applied. some schools aren't emergency facilities open 24 hours a day, and others are. some have hopping speciality services, others dont. so is largest square feet, student enrollment, faculy on staff, patients seen per day, etc
that being said, if you want a comprehensive list of vet schools and their info, updated each year - get the VMSAR book - veterinary medicine school admissions requirements. its put out by iowa state press. |

Actually, I really don't know what people refer to when they say "large".
This thread started because I was reading about Raw feeding and somebody stated that UC Davis was the second largest university in the world. Well, Davis has been a very very common name in my household and I'm willing to bet a quarter of the adults I know attended Davis. SO, Davis was never a really significant name and I really had no idea that it was the second largest in the world (or so they say...). I couldn't control my curiousity and so I ended up here. I had no idea Oregon State has a vet school (starting to fall in love with that state)! In fact, I've never heard of half of those schools. Trust me, I am more than willing to learn more about these schools. I can NOT stand my closed-minded relatives/friends A classmate of mine swears by Cal, and her parents want her to attend Stanford or Harvard. Nothing less. There ARE more than 3 nice schools, y'know!!!!!doberkim, how can I attain that book? Order from Iowa? |
