Some cool news
One of the veterinarians in the area has partnered with my humane society to offer spay/neuter surgeries at half cost. Response from the community was overwhelming- they have 30 surgeries per day scheduled, and a waiting list several pages long.
To top off this great news, they're donating all of the proceeds from all of these surgeries to the humane society! How cool is that?! |

Thats awesome!!! But I cant help but think, if they''re cutting the cost in half and still have proceeds left over to donate to the shelter just how much is profit for the vets after a neuter???????

It is a huge markup... after all, someone needs to pay the mortgage/rent on the facility, the electric bill, the employees, etc.
On top of that, autoclaves, operating tables, surgical lighting, and surgical instruments aren't cheap. Throw in the entire vet's staff health insurance and a corvette for the vet, and it all makes sense!  Unfortunately, that kind of markup is the norm, even on things like basic pet supplies. For instance, we can get a 36" crate for $30 from a wholesaler. We mark it up to $60 at the shelter. That same crate goes for $90 at Petco, and imagine the quantity discount they get! |
