I changed both my rescues names when I adopted them. Loki was formerly 'Gunny', and Lyra was originally called 'Mia' , but the rescue changed it when the owners surrendered her because she cowered when called. Her foster dad called her 'Bitsy' because she was so skinny and underweight when he took her in, but when we adopted her we changed it to Lyra (after the constellation)...it just seemed to suit her.

I used the same method as greenleaf......used the new name and doled out treats...they learned in no time.

Good luck with the Staffy...I hope you get her.

When we rescued LUCY she was 2 yrs. old. Not only did she have a different name, the folks we took her from only spoke Spanish. She didn't understand a single word of English. My 5 yr old granddaughter would go to the door and call "Lucy, Venga aqui" and she would come. Now she not only knows she is our LUCY but she knows many words and is now very Anglocized!

Susan, OC knows all his commands in english, portugese and hand signals! lol It's SOOOOO much easier at the park when everyone's yelling "Come!!!!" and all the dogs are confused as to who's being shouted at and I can just say "OC, XEGA!!!" and he knows it's for him LOL

Cheers!

We changed our TANK's name within a few days... He was Peter at the rescue, part of the Brady Bunch litter. Didn't pick out a name ahead of time because I had only seen pics before I picked him up. First comment I made was "What a little TANK he is". We played with a few names, but TANK stuck. (Can you picture a 130 lb rottie/mastiff named Peter???) He learned pretty quickly with treats. BTW, he was 8 wks when we got him.
