Rescue Dogs

I was just wondering if any of you with rescue animals had changed their names, and at what stage is best to do this?

We are interested in a SBT bitch called Jade, which I'm not keen on, so were thinking maybe Jay instead...not too much of a change.

P.S. This is a very big IF at the moment, but she does seem perfect!

Hey, that's exciting. What is she like? How old is she? I do hope you get her if you decide that you want her.

I don't think it's a big deal at all to change their names. My niece adopted a dog with one name and just started calling him the name she chose right away. She'd get his attention with a treat or toy and when he was coming to her, or looking up at her, she'd say his new name. They catch on. I call my dogs so many names, it isn't even funny.

Here she is, unfortunately she's gone out on trial

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed, but to be honest I was surprised she hadn't been snapped up quicker because she's one of the few Staffies in rescue that are good with other dogs.

Awww she's beautiful!!! I hope you get her!!!

As for the name change thing, that's perfectly fine, it happens all the time. Just never use her old name to get her attention anymore and always use the new one. We always change our rescue horses names because they rarely come with one to begin with LOL

Cheers!

Thanks, I thought it would probably be best to just call her that from the start.

Doesn't look likely and it sounds mean to say it, but I hope the trial people don't get on with her so I'm in with a chance!

I always change the names. I like a nice clean break from whatever past they had.. and to me, that means a name change too. The dog soon associates good things with their new name... and they never look back LOL Oscar was named Pugsley... Bentley was Danny, etc.

I wish you luck.

I have no problem with name-changing.

Colby was originally "Cheesehead" because the shelter had quite a few Greenbay Packer fans....so we added Colby and now she's a Cheese Baby .

Tippy was originally named "Jordan" by her previous owners. We decided we liked the name Tippy and so now she is a full-time Tippy dog. One of her previous owners did not know we had changed her name, and was calling her Jordan. He didn't mind at all that she is now the Tippy (if he had minded he'd have had to deal with it, LOL). Her previous owners weren't much for taking care of dogs....now she's our spoiled baby dog. She'll really come to any name though, as long as whoever is saying it sounds happy. But you can't say "Tippy" without her ears popping up.

I changed Buddy's name, when we got him. (When dad first saw him, he had a collar on that said "Shadow". When we caught him, the collar was gone) My brother changed Shiner's name when he got her, when she was at the pound she was called "Missy" I believe. No problems there at all, they adjusted just fine.

Or you can even use her old name followed by her new name for a day.

When I adopted my chihuahua, I picked out a name for him (Jesse James) and began calling him that the day I picked him up. No one knew his original name because he'd been dumped, but he responded well to the name. I think dogs just 'get it', that the strange word you keep using when you interact with them is "their" word, no matter how far removed from their original name it is.

Cass.

Giselle was called a myriad of names before I got her. Lorie, Lor Lor, Adora, AdoraLaura, etc. etc. They're all related so I don't think she got confused.

On the ride back home, I immediately called her Giselle. Every time I pet her, "Giselle". "Giselle", treat. "Giselle", food. "Giselle, Giselle Giselle Giselle Giselle Giselle"...WOW it's starting to look like Gazelle now! LOL!

Btw, she learned her name in a few weeks. As soon as her ears popped up when I said Giselle, I knew she knew it.

When we first met Duncan he was called Benji but he cowered when anyone said his name so we changed it straight away. Even now he is very worried if he hears Benji but comes quite happily to Duncan

Thanks, I'd never really considered a total name change. I'm not all that keen on the name Jay, I just like it better than Jade!
