Yup....completely different breeds. The one and only common ancestor of the Doberman and Miniature Pinscher is the Manchester Terrier. Everything else used was entirely different.

Where the various sized Poodles were bred from Poodles only, the three sizes of Schnauzers are three seperate breeds really...each size derived from different breeds.

Unfortunately, people, in their quest for tiny pets, have not bred out the Aussie's herding instinct.. So now what, you have a 15LB dog that wants to work. So many people get tiny dogs thinking that they will just be house dogs (and of course irresponsible breeders will tell them that a miniature aussie is a great house pet) and then they wind up with a WORKING dog in miniature, that starts destroying their house out of boredom..

Miniaturization of large breeds is IMO just a way for people to make money. Why else would you want to do something like that?? Are there not enough good, small companion breeds out there?

Alot of people are intimidated by a dogs size.....in reality, I think that often the larger the dog the calmer he is.....Great Dane for example.
If you have a sofa you can have a Dane....LOL!

A min pin is not a miniature Doberman, it is not even related. pinscher means "terrier" in German (although this is a misnomer for a Doberman)

Isn't there a breed called an Alasken Klee Kai? (Or something like that?) They look like mini Siberians. I agree, if you want a small dog, but with the big dog personality, get a terrier. Leave the big breeds in peace!

LOL...I have always thought Bostons looked like 'mini-Boxers'

sadly enough there designer breeders out there crossing pugs with rat terriers and passing them off as 'mini-Boxers' . Check it out :

Ummmmmmmm...........how in the HECK can a pug/rat terrier cross be considered a mini Boxer? It doesn't even have Boxer in it! The nerve of some people......

Carrie and Doberkim I never knew they werent even related! I knew the Min Pin was developed long before the Doberman, but I had figured they had some common bloodline someplace....Cool I love learning new things every day!

Icey, there are "mini huskies" (Rather, they call them miniature alaskans)
They are called Alaskan Klee Kais.
I've always seen that breed name before, but I've never seen pictures of it. So I didn't know Thanks for the update though lol

I agree boxerlover, the bigger the dog, the calmer they seem to be, or atleast more big babies than anything. Kid down the block from me has a Rat Terrier, he's gorgeous, but talk about a fiesty little guy. Yet Sarge thinks he's a big bad guard dog, but in the house, he's either in your lap, or wanting attention.
My aunt's mom has a Great Dane named Noah (I have pictures, I'll have to post them), and he's just a big moosh. He tries to sit on you though, and if you're on the couch, your fair game with his tail!

so true...you can see it in my own house!! 2 Min Pins and a Samoyed....
the Min Pins are feisty and yippy...loud, they can get pretty obnoxious at 5am barking!! if they want to they can be little scrappers too... they get snippy sometimes
where as my Samoyed would rather just lay on the couch and watch TV with you. He doesnt bark much, he doesnt bite or get annoyed with things like the Pins do.

My Min Pins take the ankle biter thing of little dogs to heart- they do it a lot.... where as with my Samoyed you have a harder time getting him to get off your lap cuz he wants lovings.
