Down sizing large breed's
Just had a thought - and since I have no clue on how this is done - I'm sure someone on here would know...
So my question is: how do you down size a large breed dog.....like the Pinscher....beautiful dog - and now they down sized to a little one....unbelieveable.... I wish that they'd do that for the German Shepherd's...okay guy's....don't yell at me....just thought it would be neat to have a miniture German Shepherd....![]() I'm sure that they pry breed the smallest of the breed, correct? and keep breeding the smallest - would that be right?....So if that's the case - how many yrs does that take?...and "no", I'm not planning on doing this...just thought this was a good question to ask.... |

There's two methods of doing this. One is like you said simply breeding the smallest out there with each other. The second is to actually mix breed with a smaller dog that kinda looks similar and then breeding the ones that look most like what you want.
Cheers! |

As long as it is done responsibly, I guess I don't mind, though I'd really hate to see "my" breeds miniaturized.

I would go off completely if I saw that. The breeds are fine IMO, if you want a miniature breed then the larger breeds aren't for you...

I was just about to say that a mini Sibe would be silly, but Shiba Inus are already pretty close to that LOL!!
That would be a shame to see a mini boxer. And especially a lab... a friend of mine used to own a LabXchi. Funky lookin dog, she was smaller than a lab, but bigger than a chi, and she was all black, with pricked ears and a narrow nose. |

A neighbor of mine has a mini australian Shepherd. She really doesn't resemble much of an Ast.Shep.

Icey, there are "mini huskies" (Rather, they call them miniature alaskans)
They are called Alaskan Klee Kais. As for the miniaturization of breeds... The thought of a miniature Border Collie is too much for me, thank you. BYB had their field day with the Miniature Australian Shepherd, and now there are thousands of undersized Aussies out there, with plenty of health problems.. And what purpose are they to serve? Unfortunately, people, in their quest for tiny pets, have not bred out the Aussie's herding instinct.. So now what, you have a 15LB dog that wants to work. So many people get tiny dogs thinking that they will just be house dogs (and of course irresponsible breeders will tell them that a miniature aussie is a great house pet) and then they wind up with a WORKING dog in miniature, that starts destroying their house out of boredom.. Miniaturization of large breeds is IMO just a way for people to make money. Why else would you want to do something like that?? Are there not enough good, small companion breeds out there? |

Yah it really would look funny if they like downsized al the breeds.
I like the "small size idea" but it wouldlook weird. I would probably like it more if they looked like puppies forever!! except some breeds, I think the adult standart poodle is so pretty but as puppies i think there faces look to narrow. LOL ![]() |
