Hmmm.....the story behind Artie.....do you mean how did I find out about him or why he is up for adoption? I'll tell you both! lol

I've been looking for a Boxer to adopt and so I was on Pet Finder doing a breed search. I was scanning through all of the Boxers and Artie caught my eye. I clicked on his profile and I was reading about him. He sounded like an awsome dog, so then I asked mom about him. Mom is all for it (sorta), but Dad still doesn't like him.

It says on his profile that they found him wandering around so they picked him up and did a microchip scan because they felt for sure that he was somebody's lost dog. They couldn't find a chip and nobody had inquired about him so they put him up for adoption.

I don't think I will be able to get Artie (Dad still hasn't agreed) but if I find a Boxer up for adoption closer to home (Artie is a good two hours away) I might be able to adopt that one.

What are your dad's feelings on it? Does he not want a very large dog, doesn't like the way boxers look, etc.? Just wondering because, if that might be the case, you could work around that.. (i'm the expert at convincing parents to allow another dog.. If I wasn't, I probably wouldn't have my bouncy little Border Collie. LOL) What DOES he want in a dog? Does he even want a dog at all?

It's so sad that people just let their dogs go....the least they could do is take them to a shelter.....

Cheers!

I really don't know. I don't think it has to do with the way Boxers look. I think it has more to do with, 'You already have two dogs, a cat, and a parakeet. And we will be getting that Leader Dog puppy in about a year. Why in the world do you want another dog?'
(I want another dog to do doggy sports with. Our dogs don't have the right temperment.)
He likes big dogs, (Exspecialy GSDs) but he isn't too thrilled with having a big dog in the house. (The Leader Dog puppy he will tolorate, but I don't know about a rescue dog and I am not going to get another dog unless it can be inside.)
He isn't the biggest animal lover in the whole intire world. He doesn't like cats but he does like dogs. He just doesn't feel the need to have more than one or two.

Mom is all game for letting me adopt a Boxer (if it is close by) but Dad just doesn't feel a need to get another dog. (Even if I want to do dog sports with it. I don't know if he knows this fact yet so I'll have to tell him......)

I know a woman who has two daughters. They had a Yorkie but ended up having to give him away because of various behavior problems (don't worry, they gave him to their neighbor, a dog trainer). They found a cute chocolate Cocker Spaniel. It took awhile and lots of visiting to convince her husband to get this dog. When they went to get him he was gone, but I'm telling you this because believe me her husband ain't much of a dog person. Hopefully the same thing will happen for you (except for the dog already having a home).

Well, would your dad be up for a smaller breed? I know you love Boxers, but think of it this way: I had my heart set on a German Shepherd, but several things, mainly my parents and the fact that they did not want a huge dog, were preventing me from getting one. So, I started researching again and got interested in the Border Collie.. (Definitely not saying that a BC might be the right breed for you, just an example) They are about 30LBS smaller than the shepherd, which my parents liked, but they still had the intense 'work ethic' and very strong drive, which I liked.. And, I love my little Border Boy, he's the ideal dog for me, but also fits my parents requirements..

Just thinking, a smaller dog is less imposing in the house, than a large dog. Your dad might like that.. And, a smaller dog could still do sports like Agility, flyball, even more demanding jobs like SAR, tracking.. I've even met a woman with a 35LB Border Collie mix that competes actively in Schutzhund..
Just something to think about

Ya, if I get a dog, it will probably have to be a smaller one (maybe. I really don't know) and it will have to be in the animal shelter near our house. (About a 15-20min drive away.) I was checking out the animal shelter and there is a dog in it that I like. He is a Leoperd Dog mix (looks like it is mixed with a GSD.) Here is his link:

I'm going to ask my mom if we can just go to the animal shelter and look. We dont' have to adopt, just look and see if there are any dogs there that I/we might be interested in. Wish me luck!

your leopard dog looks like a heeler mix or something! Very cool looking little guy!
Good luck and sorry that you couldnt get your first pick!
I pegged you for more of a stocky dog person (like me)...
since bigger boxer/mastiff types are out of the question, did you ask about Bulldogs?

I wish you luck in finding a dog that will be a compromise between you and your parents. Let us know what you see at the shelter.

I am a stocker doggy person. I love the stocky, big built working breeds. The are so totally awsome!!!! (But what is weird is I also like the sighthound look......exspecialy the Ibizans and Pharoah hounds. )

Actually, my parents might go for a Bulldog. Exspecialy since they are a 'lazy' breed and normally just sleep all day . lol My lil bro may not go for that though because he really wants a dog to play ball with. I LOVE the Frenchies, but you don't see those to often in shelters. Same with the English Bulldogs.

(That one Bulldog was really cute that you posted.....to bad he ain't in Indiana!)
