Guess what my (big) boy just did?! Yaay!
Aysa's been having trouble telling us when he needs to go outside to go potty, so yesterday I decided we needed to take drastic measures and had him tethered to me all day (today he's been under constant supervision as well). I'd heard of bell training and decided that would be good to try too. We didn't have a bell laying around, but we did have a set of mini windchimes that hangs from our back door (not the door we take Aysa out to go potty). Aysa had been playing around with them a couple times, so I decided to use those and hung them on the sliding glass door that goes out to the backyard. Yesterday I tried to train him just to bump the chimes with his nose and was using treats. He wasn't real interested and didn't seem to really care, so we did the short training session and then the ret of the day I rang them before we went out. Last night and today I could get him to ring the chimes if I asked him to several times, but he still just seemed like he didn't know what he was doing or why he was doing it.
But you know what he did tonight? He was not under supervision during dinner (because Dad was supposed to be watching him and Dad's not doing real well with training ) and guess what he did? We're sitting in the kitchen and we hear the chimes. My sister and I's heads snapped towards each other and I was like, "run!" (LOL). She took him out (he was waitin' by the door!) and HE WENT POTTY! My boy can DO this! Yaay! I'm so proud. ![]() |

WHOOOOOEEEEEE! Let me interpret: Reading your post brought tears (happy, happy) to my eyes, a smile on my face and a new plan of action. I had read about the bell, but don't have one. HOWEVER, I DO have little decorative bird houses with those little chime things on them. Thanks for your enlightenment I'm on my way to start our new potty signal. P.S. Brodie's dad "watches" him in the L/R while I'm in the kitchen. I use a lot of Dawn and vinegar on my carpet as a result of Dad's vigilence. |

They aren't real easy to hear if the TV or something's on, but a bell wouldn't be much better, I imagine. I hope it works for you, too! ![]() No accidents today, but he hasn't been ringing the chimes. *sigh* Oh, except he did ring them TWICE when he wanted to go outside and look around! Geez! lol |

Mainsheltie, I have always been told NOT to use vinegar to clean up potty messes. Vinegar can smell like urine and encourage a dog to continue peeing in that spot. Instead try something like Natures Miracle which actually eliminates all orders in the spot. |

Mrs.Grubby, I've read that it nuetralizes the ammonia in the dog urine, and the ammonia smell is what draws the pet back to the spot (if you google "vinegar nuetralizes ammonia" you'll get some hits). I use Clorox oxyfresh stain remover or something like that, and then vinegar. We haven't been having repeat accidents from any of the dogs since we started using vinegar.

i just cover it with a newspaper like Adam Sandler in "Big Daddy"...J/K! i'd like to use vinegar to clean the potty, and the windows, and like a milllion other things, but the fiance' gets neaseous (sp?) when he smells vinegar...what a whimp!!! I usually use some generic pet stain and odor remover from the dollar store and I think it's fantastic oxyPower. Haven't had any repeats even though they aren't necessarily odor REMOVING products. maybe trixie just doesn't have a good sniffer. (I'm hoping that the stains come back because I HATE my carpet very much. It's this old worn out blue with stains and wear spots all over it...I've shampooed it like 3 times and it still is matted down!!!)
