Rear Dew Claws?

About Rear Dew Claws... What determines if a dog has them or not? Is it is breed trait or just a some dogs do/some don't kinda thing?
Lilly does not have them at all and has never had them removed, just born without them. Same with Theo(RIP). But Wesley on the other hand was born with them.
Was your dog(s) born with rear dew claws?
I am very curious to find out what is is that determines if a dog will have rear dew claws or not...

Kenya has her dew claws. She is a Collie. Probably varies by breed.

Jesse doesn't have any, rear dew claws. Just ones on his fore paws. I'm pretty sure Chi's aren't born with rear dew claws (happy to be corrected though...I've just never seen one with rear dew claws).

Cass.

Harley was born with rear dewclaws, and only got them removed when he was 10 years old (he got so far, coping fine with them, but one day caught it on something so we decided to have them removed). He came home from the vets with blue 'socks' (bandages) on all his feet.. it was so cute!

Harley was actually supposed to have them removed when he was being desexed as a puppy, but they 'forgot' to do it. While Harley was under anasthetic to remove bladder stones we thought we'd 'kill two birds with one stone' to save him having to go under anasthetic a second time.

Abby wasn't born with rear dewclaws, thank goodness.

I don't think mine were born with dewclaws although they weren't born here so I can never be to sure. They all have their front ones though.

Cass.
My cousins long haired Chi has rear dewclaws.

From what I know, none of my dogs have had rear dew claws except for Ike. His were either removed, or they *wanted* to come in but didn't. He has a very tiny piece of nail, it's about the size of a cat nail but not pointy, located in the spot rear dew claws would be. It's only the one foot, and there is no "toe" looking area. It just penetrates through his fur. It's too funny.

IMO, I think it has to do with the individual dog. But I could be wrong.

Neither Hippo nor Saboo were born with rear dewclaws.

One of the things I love about helping our vet at the shelter with surgeries is noticing dewclaws. It's amazing that puppies from the same litter could have such different rear paws- some have none, others have a tiny little skintag-looking thing, others have a very loose dewclaw, and others have ones that are very well formed and are very firm.

It's definitely a breed thing, some breeds have one set of rear dews, some have a double set (Newfoundlands, Great Pyrenees), but the odd dew does appear now and again. In mixed breeds I've seen pups with some just on the right, just in the back, on just one front paw, or double on one side in the rear, and one on the other side.

Dew Claws

I think its genetics...I have a pyrenees and they are one of the few breeds with double dew claws and its highly recommended to not remove them on pyrs.

My last litter, 10 pups, some had rear dew claws, some didn't. Some had only one on one leg. I had them all removed at 24 hours old, along with their fronts... I don't know if I will have front ones done again though.

Spiritus, why are you considering not removing fronts again in the future? I have a lab breeder friend that has stopped. Her reasoning was she does not sell "hunting" labs, and she feels there may be a connection between shoulder problems, "pano" and dew claw removal. I'm just interested in your reasoning. As my dogs are hunters, I would be hard pressed to not remove them, but am always open to more research.
