How does your dog(s) play?

I was playing with Duke earlier and it made me wonder how everyone else's dogs play.

Duke is a very "paws-on" player, and he won't start until I goof off. Charging him, staring at him, whining like him, there are tons of things that I've found set him off. Out in the yard today he was doing his really physical, "pretend to kill mom" playing. (And I'm sure from the road it does look like he is mauling me.) He jumps up, flailing around, grabbing whatever piece of clothing he can. The whole time he's mouthing me, he's trying to knock me over with his front legs. He's punching at me, and most often he wraps his legs around mine and trys to trip me. I have fun, he has fun, and he hasn't succeeded in knocking me over yet. Although, there was one time that I was holding his tennis ball, he saw it from across the yard, came charging over for it, and instead of being patient, he lept and soared a couple of feet, hit me and instantly had his front legs locked around mine. He was getting that ball, even if it meant me on my butt. Thankfully I somehow kept my balance, and I threw his ball for him.

Luckily he has an on/off switch. He knows that we don't play rough until I give the go-ahead.

So, how do you play with your dogs?

Colby is a very vocal and physical dog when playing. She loves to run around in the yard barking up a storm, tearing sticks apart and attacking the other dogs.

May is more of a dog that likes to run around and act like a physco. She loves to run around with me making goofy noises, and her and the other two play "ATTACK" where May runs around the yard and when she passes Colby, Colby tries to attack her. When she passes Tippy, Tippy jumps at her and barks.

Tippy LOVES to play with her paws. I often get down on the ground and we paw at each other. I pick up her paws and goof around with her. She also loves it when she's laying on her back and you grab her paws and move them around.

OC is a very "physical" dog. He loves to wrestle most using his paws to "punch" followed by mouthing and then he'll go do zoomies while I pretend to chase him (i cheat and cut corners) and then he'll randomly race to me and jump up and we continue to wrestle. But since I can';t risk him deciding it's time to wrestle when we're visiting the elderly, or presenting to school children, he has an "on/off siwtch" too. To begin wrestling I look at him and say "Ready? FIGHT!" then start swiping at him with my arms and pushing him around. When play time's over I hold both hands up with palms out and say "OC, ok that's enough" and give him a good massage to make him chill out.

He's a really rough fighter with other dogs (typical husky) so I have to monitor him when he's playing with small or older dogs. He's really good for controling himself but sometimes he forgets and starts playing with them like he does with Ronin.

Cheers!

lol well you haven't experienced a dog who treats you like one of his own until you've played with a Boxer..These dogs once you get them going will literally box you..they jump up and hit you with both paws and let me tell you Dracs got hubby with a real strong punch one time in a not so good spot...lol...I thought Zeus broke by jaw on New Years eve because I was playing with him and he went to turn around and head butted me right in my jaw..man they have to have the biggest hardest heads...lol

oc--One vet thinks Tippy (German Shepherd/Border Collie mix) might actually have some Husky in her. She's got a very unique howl. And she doesn't bark but howl/bark.

Gaddy, that awesome! Ya OC only barks when I'm telling him to speak and that's because it's very froced (since he's wanting the treat so bad he'll try to get ANY sound out) and even then it sound like a puppy's yip. Without a command, I don't think I've ever heard himbark......he does make lots of other sounds though! LOL I love when he greets me every day with his woooo woooo wooo

Cheers!

Giselle gets p-h-y-s-i-c-a-l. She uses her long legs to her full extent and she paws all over you. That needle nose also comes at an advantage. She'll shove it into you, under you, wham it into you, etc. etc. When she's playing with other dogs, she is extremely mouthy. Did I mention the muzzle is a dog's best friend?

Bailey doesn't play with me physically. She just wants to play fetch or a game of tug-o-war with her rope or stinky-cow. Lucy is a lover and just wants to sit in my lap. It's hard to get her to play tug-o-war and she is just barely learning fetch. They both play together and rough house a little but Bailey always lets Lucy win. They get the zoomies and tear around the house at mach 1. Last night Bailey switched directions suddenly and they both met in the kitchen and had a head on collision. They both yelped and wanted to be held and kissed for about two hours after that.

Winston LOVES it if I push him away... I push, then he'll spin around and give out a YIPE like a puppy, and run back, I push him again, and he spins, YIPES, then runs back. It's funny. Bentley does this loud.. kinda like a snarl.. more like an AWWWWWRRRLL sound with his mouth wide open, and gums my hand. So gentle. My Oscar isn't a very playful guy.. though he does like to bring me one of his favorite toys so he can play tug of war. He does enjoy that.

The girls are very physical with eachother and Sarge. We have to watch Denali because she grabs the side of their neck (loose skin) and pulls on them. We yell "Ouch!" to get her to quit.

Sarge has the typical boxer trait of boxing. I get on the floor with him and wrestle, and he eventually stops and rolls over like "You win! I give up!" LOL
When he plays with the girls, he's a bit rough, as he likes to bite their neck. He actually only plays with the girls. He doesn't like puppies, male dogs, and hyper dogs.

Denali doesn't really like to play with anyone besides the dogs. She'll play fetch and tug of war (watch your fingers when she regrips!). I take the hair on her back legs, and pick her rear end up. Then she starts running around like a maniac and attacks the other dogs LOL. She's very very vocal, and she's got a deeper howl than most females. So people get scared.

Sheiba and I have a game we play. She'll start to attack my hands, then we stop and I pick my hand up very slowly, and move it towards her face really slow. She stops and just watches out of the corner of her eye and then all of a sudden... "CHOMP!" lol I love playin with her. She only plays with my mom and I. But she isn't much of a human wrestler.

OC I love their wooo woo's! Sheiba only barks on command or if she wants a treat or food REALLY bad. I can definetly never live without a husky. It would just never be the same without having a dog to have a conversation with and get a response..

My Doberman:

I don't play roughly with Lyric...not too much anyhow. I discourage him from getting overly exciteable because he will jump up and bite my sleeve and wreck my coat or arm. I don't want him grabbing me around the legs (he's tried) because it makes me feel out of control. He is a rather large Doberman, 29" and 80-85Lbs and he's going to get heavier. I don't want to be on the bottom. LOL.

He is, like most Dobermans very paw oriented and pounces on everything. He'll chase me down the hall, trying to get me with his paws, one after the other while I go backwards. I play tug and hide and seek and he loves to weave through my legs and do some other tricks. His agility obstacles are play to him. And romping through the woods, jumping over logs he loves. He likes his kong and nyla bones. He steals dishtowels and shakes his head while he's killing them. He is very silly, humorous and loves to play.

I don't want to bore you with so much stuff, but I have four dogs. So....

Chulita Chihuahua:

She is so demure and sweet. She is a fairly quiet dog. (I don't mean vocally) She's pretty calm and laid back. But when I talk to her in a very snippy, short, quick words, high pitched, she comes alive. She wags her tail so fast, it looks like two tails. Then she'll spin a couple of times and do the strangest angles with her body.

If I throw a piece of kibble down and say, "Get That!" (in a pretend angry way....bossy) she thinks it's a riot and hops/pounces up to it, throws it in the air and spins 2 or 3 times before it hits the ground. Then she will run up to it, dart back from it, twist her body into an arch sideways and hop toward it again. She has the funniest manuvers I've ever seen. She could be a Yoga instructor. She can run like the wind too...a mere blur.

If I say, "Get A Toey" (I'm trying to pronounce it) Sharp, quick.....she'll start looking frantically for a toy to get.

When she wants to instigate play with Jose, she makes these incredibly quick, (probably 4 or 5 per second) successive hops with her body turned into that sideways arch toward him and into him. LOL. Well...you'd have be there.

Then as quick as a wink, if I go sit down on the couch and say, "let's settle," she'll come up and lie quietly again.

Kota will pretend bite. We push her away and she comes jumping back ready for more. She doesn't like to get too rough so you've gotta be gentle with her.
