Not At All Funny Comments

I was on a conference call for work earlier this week and my neighbor dog started barking. He barked for the entire hour I was on the call. 15 minutes into the call, I took my phone off of mute to contribute to the meeting and I also made the comment.

"Excuse the barking in the background. My neighbor's dog seems to be a little carried away today."

A colleague commented, "Do you have a gun?"

I was peeved by the commend and retorted this way, "I do have guns. I was born in Texas. However, I am a dog-lover. I think the owner accidentally left him outside."

It is several days later and I am still irritated that someone would think it is funny to talk about shooting a dog. Would they say that if kids were making a lot of noise? I don't think so.

Right now I can think of more productive ways to use my guns. j/k

I know what you mean, I've had the same comment made to me when on the phone with someone we hoped to have build the addition on our house. Believe it or not, he wasn't chosen just for that reason.

I cannot stand comments like that. My father is a certified animal hater. Everytime I am on the phone with him and Shammie barks, he tells me I should let him "go play in the road" or "you know what I would do about that, Kristine"...what????!!!!!! Yep dad, maybe I will teach Shamous to knock you down and poop on your bald spot...

I was in a shop after work yesterday and someone asked me about work (I still had my shelter t-shirt on).

I mentioned that we spay/neuter rabbits and they started asking questions. I explained that often bunnies get aggressive with all the excess hormones and this can help greatly.

They told me that we should grill and eat them.

LOL!!!

I think you handled the situation well. I can understand when someone is joking about something, but saying something like that is dumb.

My father, although not an animal hater at all (he has always loved animals and been fascinated by them...he's just not a 'pet person'), is one of those people who makes stupid comments. Mostly because he has no clue what is acceptable. He knows he's not serious so he assumes everyone else thinks it's as funny as he does.
He often makes comments about people's pet rabbits just like...

...that. I always tell him that it's not funny and he should learn to keep his mouth shut, but he never does. I just assume that some people are socially inept and leave it at that.

Cass.

That is really messed up. I don't think I'd have a "loving" retort to that one and would give them a piece of my mind.

Judge Judy had a case once where someone's dog got out and ate a child's pet chicken. The kid was devastated. The dog owners were warned multiple times about not containing their dog so the child's mother sued them for a couple hundred.

The adult dog owner offered the family $1.98 to replace it. He thought it was funny. Judged Judy didn't, was very sympathetic, and ruled in favor of the plaintiff. Even after the ruling, the jerk made comments about getting another at the grocery store.

Judge Judy gained mad points in my book after that. Granted, chicken and rabbits are livestock but if a person has one as a pet, we should respect that. A comment about harming someone's pet is never funny.

I'm a firm believer that animals are not only on the planet for food, labor and clothing but they are also here to help us define our own humanity. I think we should use animals to rehabilitate criminals and the mentally ill.

OK, I've digressed considerably.
