Taking a Big Leap
So I was in the doggie bakery near my house the other day and the lady that owns it told me about her friend that does Schnauzer rescue in Tulsa took in 10 dogs from a out of town puppy mill. She asked if I'd be interested in adopting and gave me the rescue lady's number. I talked to rescue lady last night. She said she didn't know for sure if any of them would work for me and Boone, since he's so young and playful. I then told her that I'd foster for her if adoption wasn't right for us right now. Soooooo . . . tomorrow morning I'm meeting her at the vet's office she works part time at to meet some of the dogs. Four of them are still at the vets for various infections and spuetering. She's bringing two from home that may be a good temporary companion for Boone, if not playmate.
This woman is a one man show. I knew there was a Schnauzer rescue in Tulsa but I never imagined it would be only one person running it. She said she used to have a friend of hers foster for her but now her friend has a new puppy and can't help. So she does it all alone. I have an immense amount of respect for her selflessness and want to help anyway I can. I think it'll be a wonderful experience to give back to the breed that's changed my life so much. I'm very excited about this, if you can't tell! LOL It'll be a great adventure for both Boone and I. I realize that there's some drawbacks to it: getting attached to the dogs, having to deal with emotional or physical handicaps, stuff like that. But I can imagine that the reward of helping these dogs will be so worth it. ![]() |

Oh, that is so wonderful what you're doing. Talk about selflessness. It must be so hard if you get attached and have to give the dog up. But it is such a good, charitable thing to do. I hope it all works out how you want it to. Let us know what happens. Kudos!

Thanks for the encouragment, gals. I'm probably going to need a lot of it. Like you said Carrie, it will be really hard to give those sweat bearded doggies up after taking care of them for a while. I'll be sure to check back in Tuesday morning (Monday's a holiday for me) to tell everyone how it's going.

What's the difference on adopting and fostering? Either way one of the dogs will be in your house, or is it that they are not right for you on a long term basis? Anyway, you're doing a great thing! Good Luck!
PS - I love the name Boone! ![]() |

How awesome! Rescue would be at a stand still without foster parents as well as people like her who are willing to go the extra mile.
Kudos to you for offering to help out! Hope all works out well. ![]() |

Update: His name is Smokey. He's an 8 year old black schnauzer. I'm not sure if he's a mini or standard. He was diagosed a few months back with a thyroid problem, so he's a BIG boy. Probably about 45-50 lbs. So he takes a pill twice a day. Smokey is so wonderful. He's my "gentle giant". He couldn't be sweeter or more loving. Smokey the Bear is what I've started calling him.
Boone, however, is a BRAT! Ugh. He's been awful the last few days. He usually loves other dogs and loves to play but for whatever reason has not taken to Smokey very well. He's so jealous and guards me from Smokey constantly. Smokey can't make a move without Boone knowing about it. He's gotten a little better yesterday but he's still a little bully. I'm really hoping he'll come around and love Smokey as much as I do. Despite all that, it's really great having two dogs in the house. I feel "doubly" protected and I definitely know when anything is going on outside the boys think shouldn't be. LOL I took Boone and Smokey to my parents house this weekend. My dad fell in love with Smokey immediately. My mom has secretly talked to me about getting a dog for dad, so maybe we'll get to keep Smokey in the family. He's such an amazing dog, he'd be great for an older couple to snuggle up with. |

I just got back from lunch. Those two crazy guys were so wound up when I walked in the door, they about knocked me over! LOL
Today is the first day that the boys have to entertain themselves since I'm back at work. They tussled for about 10 minutes and then passed out in my bedroom. Nuts! So I enjoyed the silence, ate lunch, patted their little heads and left. Maybe this is a good thing!! LOL |
